With the many weather-related campus closures this month, several people have asked when and how Rave Alert messages are sent at the College. Here are some explanations and tips to help everyone understand how to get the most out of this tool.
What is Rave Alert?
- Rave Alert is an automated emergency messaging system that the College can activate to send an urgent message to students and employees via text, email, voicemail, and social media.
Who receives Rave Alert messages?
- Current students and employees are automatically subscribed to Rave Alert, using the information we have in the College database.
- Community members (those who do not have Shoreline email addresses) can voluntarily opt-in to receive alerts by signing up on the Community Member Alert web page.
- The system is designed to automatically stop sending to people who are no longer listed as active employees. Occasionally former employees receive an alert because some employee records remain active beyond an employee’s separation date. Former employees are able to unsubscribe at any time if they receive an alert in error.
How do I unsubscribe or change the way I receive alerts?
When does the College send Rave Alert messages?
- Rave Alert is most often activated when inclement weather affects College operations, but would also be used in the event of a campus emergency, such as a fire, earthquake, or other unsafe situation.
- During weather events, the Executive Team, Facilities, and Safety & Security work together to carefully evaluate the safety conditions on campus. If a closure or late start is needed, they attempt to send out messaging either the night before or by 5:00 a.m.
- Weather and road conditions can sometimes change rapidly. If plans must change on short notice, the Executive Team re-evaluates the safest course of action for the campus community and sends an updated alert as early as possible. Sometimes this may occur after 5:00 a.m., depending on the event, and we understand this may create confusion or hardship for some students and employees.
- Rave Alerts are not sent when the College is open and operating under normal conditions, so if you do not receive an alert and do not see a message on the College website, you can assume the College is operating normally.
Where else is emergency information posted?
In addition to Rave Alert messages, the College publishes emergency information in several places:
- The College website will have an alert banner at the top of every page.
- The main phone line will be updated with closure details (206-546-4101).
- Local news stations will post school closure information on TV, radio, and the internet during major weather events.
- The College’s primary Facebook and Twitter accounts will be updated to reflect closure information.

How to Write a Great College Admissions Essay, Room 1402
Mon., Feb. 4: 2:30-4pm
Attend this workshop to understand the role of the college essay and the process of writing and to discuss samples. Includes Dos & Don’ts and follow up resources. You will also do some writing. Prerequisite: enrollment or completion of English 101. Note: for help with your draft essay, go to The Writing and Learning Studio.

College representatives from Central Washington University and Seattle University will be at Shoreline’s campus to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.

The Shoreline Community College Art Gallery is proud to present The BIGGER Picture,an exhibition that celebrates creative visionaries among our staff and faculty from all departments and disciplines. Through visual, performing and literary arts, many staff and faculty connect with students and surrounding communities in diverse and inspiring ways or make art for personal and spiritual health. This exhibit honors these big-picture thinkers from a variety of fields across campus who participate in artistic practices both in their personal lives and through student engagement.

Workforce Assistance and Qualifications
A college degree can improve income by 56% above a high school diploma alone, but getting there can be expensive.
Do you need money to help pay for your education?

Workforce could potentially pay for your educational expenses if:
* You are in a Professional Technical Program (e.g., Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Automotive, Manufacturing, Visual Communications, Music Technology, some business, and more!)
* Lived in WA for a year or more and are a citizen or legal resident.
Or meet one of the following qualifications, if you are:
· Receiving any benefits from DSHS.
· Only earn $2000 or less a month.
· Have received unemployment in the past four years.
· Laid off or were self-employed and need to retrain.
· Recently lost or divorced a supporting spouse.
· Became a veteran within the past four years

Per the President, designated free parking days occur on campus at the start of each quarter, spanning the first day of international orientation through the first few days of the quarter.
For winter quarter 2019, the free parking days will be: December 31 – January 4.
Safety & Security will post signage on the parking machines on these days.

Lynda.com has become “LinkedIn Learning” and we are upgrading as of December 18th, 2018.
All account and course information will be transferred to LinkedIn Learning. The upgrade will require activation via an e-mail from LinkedIn Learning that you will receive. Lynda.com will not be accessible during this upgrade to LinkedIn Learning.

A reminder that campus and all campus services will be closed Dec. 24-28 and on Jan. 1.
Due to the winter closure, the tuition due date for winter quarter is extended to Jan. 2 and students have until Jan. 7 to sign up for a payment plan.
During the break, you can still register and pay online. Staff will be available to assist you when the campus reopens on Dec. 31 and from Jan. 2 on.
Winter Quarter begins on Monday, January 7, 2019. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
