The Crossing Borders Creative Writing Contest will be accepting submissions from Shoreline Community College students from November 12 through November 30. The short-story submissions should be between 800 – 2000 words, define the value of crossing borders (physically or metaphorically), use correct grammar and punctuation, and be the author’s own, original work.
Submit entries to Tferris@shoreline.edu with Crossing Borders in the subject line of the email. This contest is open to students only.

Dear Students,
The annual October event, The Great ShakeOut, has become part of the Shoreline Community College culture with staff, faculty, and students participating annually. This year’s shakeout event is on Thurs., Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m.
The ShakeOut has been an excellent awareness tool for encouraging all departments on our campus to prepare for emergencies and disasters. This year, areas of the U.S. were severely impacted by hurricanes and wildfires, and our Pacific Northwest region can also be potentially impacted by a different natural hazard threat: earthquakes. So please remember to Drop, Cover, & Hold On.
This year Shoreline Community College will be participating in this worldwide earthquake preparedness awareness effort by testing a classroom alert notification system called LYNX. All smart classrooms on campus have a LYNX software program enabled and located on the instructor’s main computer. The LYNX system will allow Shoreline Emergency Management team members to send an alert communication inside the classrooms via projection screen. If you are interested in how LYNX alert system works, please view the LYNX training video posted on CANVAS.
When:
The ShakeOut for this year is scheduled for October 18, 2018 at 10:18 a.m. Everyone on campus is encouraged to participate.
What to Do:
At Shoreline, college officials suggest three things to get ready for the Great Washington Shakeout drill:
#1. Read the plan
– Go to http://www.shoreline.edu/safetyandsecurity/emergency-preparedness.aspx to see Shoreline’s emergency preparedness information and the Emergency Management Response plan.
– Go to https://www.shakeout.org/washington/
#2. Make sure you that you are signed up to receive the campus RAVE ALERT messages
– Go to https://www.shoreline.edu/Connect to add phone numbers and additional email accounts to your message preferences
#3. Do the drill on Oct. 18th at 10:18 a.m.
If it is appropriate for where you are:
– DROP to the ground
– Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table
– HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops
In addition, demonstrations of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and Stryker evacuation chairs will take place from 11:00 a.m-12:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 18th, in the main lobby of 9000 Building.
Remember, the LYNX message will only be a test.

The International Education Week 2018 Badminton Tournament is Fri., Nov. 16 from 9am-noon. All students are welcome to participate.

All students are welcome to enter the International Education Week (IEW) 2018 – Photo Contest. The theme this year is “Growing.”
• The deadline for submissions is Nov. 7 by 11:59 PM. Please email no more than three photos (with a caption for each) to iwelcome@shoreline.edu using the subject line “IEW Photo Contest.”
• Top 10 entries will be selected by a panel of faculty & staff judges and displayed in the PUB Nov. 13-14. Voting for a winner will happen at IEW events and in the International Education office in PUB 9302.
• Winners will be announced at the IEW event on Nov. 15 in PUB Lobby.

There’s a new exhibit in the Admin (1000 Bldg) Art Gallery:
SOS for Lake Pátzcuaro
The Lily Project / Proyecto DeLirio
October 1, 2018 – January 11, 2019
This exhibition combines cultural preservation, environmental activism and community collaboration through the processes of paper making and printmaking to share the story and inspiration of Taller DeLirio.
Near Lake Patzcuaro in the small town of Huecorio, Mexico, artist Esteban Silva and his wife Tania Dominguez are working to bring attention to the slow destruction of the lake by an invasive water plant, the water hyacinth. Esteban and Tania responded to this environmental crisis by removing and making paper from the hyacinth. They use this paper to promote awareness and community involvement through their studio, Taller DeLirio.
In 2016, Taller DeLirio invited painters and engravers to participate in a poster project “SOS for Lake Patzcuaro” and the result was surprising. They ended with a collection of 64 posters by 32 local artists, addressing the environmental and social themes of the lake environment. The paper and graphic project was carried out in conjunction with their group of paper workers at Taller DeLirio and the invited artists.

The College’s parking and shuttle service team is aware of the high demand for parking during the beginning of fall quarter, especially during the peak hours of 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and especially in the upper campus lots. If you are arriving on campus around peak hours, we encourage you to park at the Greenwood Lot. Alternatively, during peak hours students are encouraged to park at the Sears lot and use the shuttle service.

Shoreline Community College is proposing the repeal of Chapter 132G-136 and the creation of Chapter 132G-137 of the Washington Administrative Code regarding the Use of College Facilities. The College is proposing these changes to provide updated and clarified language regarding the Use of College Facilities at Shoreline Community College.
The update code incorporates new model language that implements best practices for the smooth operation of Shoreline Community College’s buildings and grounds in support of our primary mission as an educational facility.
In compliance with RCW 34.05.320, the College is providing an opportunity for comments on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Quiet Dining Room of the PUB. Alternately, comments related to this rule revision, may be submitted to sccrulemaking@shoreline.edu on or before October 4, 2018.
Shoreline Community College is also proposing the creation of Chapter 132G-142 of the Washington Administrative Code regarding the Use of College Facilities for Expressive Activities. The College is proposing these changes to provide clarifying language regarding the Use of College Facilities for Expressive Activities at Shoreline Community College.
The new code incorporated new model language that implements best practices regarding time, manner and place restrictions for expressive activities on campus covered under First Amendment rights. This language is being created to ensure that there are protections in place to eliminate disruption to the educational process.
In compliance with RCW 34.05.320, the College is providing an opportunity for comments on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Quiet Dining Room of the PUB. Alternately, comments related to this rule revision, may be submitted to sccrulemaking@shoreline.edu on or before October 4, 2018.
