GAC: The Iranian Nuclear Deal – Preventing a Weapons Program?, PUB 9208

Come to a talk featuring Dr. Halvor A Undem, University of Washington, Jackson School of International Studies, and former Advisor to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In 2015, a landmark nuclear deal was reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers (the United States, Great Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany). Crippling economic sanctions on Iran would be lifted once the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) certified that Iran had restricted its sensitive nuclear activities. The White House says the deal will prevent Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon. Iran says it has the right to nuclear energy – and stresses that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Here’s an opportunity for folks from all across campus to meet the Music and Music Technology Department faculty and hear them perform. Always a diverse and exciting experience, the faculty will perform music from a variety of genres. There will be a performance at 9:30am followed by a repeat performance at 10:30am.

GRAMMY U is a unique and fast-growing community of college students, primarily between the ages of 17 and 25, who are pursuing a career in the recording industry. Events are scheduled throughout the semester to give GRAMMY U members a wide variety of experiences and professional development. Everyone is welcome to this presentation.

Presented by Shoreline Community College and the Musical and Opera Program, this production is made possibly by the generous support of the Student Leadership Center.
Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critic’s Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of America’s greatest art forms.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

6X6NW Art Show, PUB
Sat., Oct. 8: 6-9 p.m.
6X6NW will feature hundreds of 6 x 6-inch works of art from artists all over the country in all variety of medium. This evening event will include music, food, and a chance to purchase any of the artworks for $36. Proceeds from the event support the programming activities of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council.
Doors open at 6pm for drinks, light appetizers, and time to view the art on display while mingling with friends and artists. Art for purchasing begins after 7pm. There will also be a raffle for a chance to win “Collectors Choice”— the opportunity to choose the first work sold.
Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at www.6x6nw.brownpapertickets.com.

The issue of campus safety is a vital concern for students, their families, faculty, and staff. In compliance with the federal law for crime statistics known as “The Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act of 1990” (more commonly called the “Clery Act”), the College has posted the 2015 Annual Security Report Handbook online.
The law, originally enacted by Congress in 1990 as the Campus Security Act, was initiated by Howard and Connie Clery after their daughter Jeanne was killed at Lehigh University in 1986. Amendments to the Act in 1998 renamed it in memory of Jeanne Clery. The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to publish an annual security report every year by October 1st that contains three years of crime statistics and certain policy statements, including sexual assault policies, which ensure basic victims’ rights and point to resources available including where students, staff, faculty, and visitors should go to report crimes.
The Department of Education requires the reporting of criminal offenses occurring on:
- Main Campus
- Adjacent public property to the College’s perimeter property (such as Shoreview Park).
- Non-campus property that we have a relationship to (such as the Sears Parking Lot), and
- Residence facilities, if applicable.
In addition to crime statistics and reporting information, the second section of the Annual Report provides information on Title IX, The Violence Against Women’s Reauthorization Act of 1994 (VAWA), and The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (SaVE). VAWA and SaVE enhanced The Clery Act and were created in response to increasing reports of violence against college-aged female students. Their legislation represented a turning point in our nation’s handling of sexual misconduct and offender accountability. Under Title IX’s sexual discrimination prohibition, the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights has underscored that all students, regardless of gender or gender identity, are to be treated equitably in complaints involving sexual violence.
Crime statistics (always for the previous year) are made available to the public on or before October 1st each year.

Shoreline Community College is a shuttle stop location for the UW – Stanford football game parking on Friday afternoon, Sept. 30. Shuttles run from 4-10 p.m. and pick up and drop off by the #2000 upper parking lot. Signage will direct drivers to the lower gravel lot, starting at 3 p.m.
There is a $5 charge on site and $4 charge in advance to ride the shuttle. Go to www.UWshuttle2016.com to sign up in advance.

Student Life is hiring! Working with Student Life is a great way to get involved, meet new people, and gain leadership experience for your resume.
We currently have two positions open:
- ASG Technological Affairs Officer: Member of the Associated Student Government that maintains the Student Leadership website and chairs the Technology Review Committee. Up to 17 hours per week.
- Student Representatives (Hiring 2): serve as an extension of the Associated Student Government and primarily serve on campus committees and support ASG members with campus projects. Up to 7 hours per week.
Both positions pay $11.11 per hour.
Applications are due on Monday, October 10.

Soft skills is a term often associated with a person’s “EQ” (Emotional Intelligence Quotient), the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, interpersonal skills, managing people, leadership, etc. that characterize relationships with other people.
Other examples of soft skills: Communicating well verbally, as well as non-verbally. Making good decisions. Adaptability. Problem solving. Commitment, Flexibility, Time Management. There are even more, and we’ll touch on a few this Friday, with Shoreline Senior Center volunteer and longtime Roundtable contributor, Ed Cruver. Do you react when criticized, or calmly consider the criticism? How well do you handle pressure? Do you see things from other’s perspectives? Ed will cover this and more, and of course we’d love to hear your own examples of soft skills and how best to put them to work. Great coffee and treats, compliments of Central Market, and always free!

Voter Registration in the PUB 11:00 am to 1:00 pm September 29, 2016.
October 10, 2016 is the registration deadline for Washington State citizens to vote in the November 8 general election. Two representatives from the American Association of University Women will register voters in the lobby of the PUB from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, September 29.
