Dear Campus Community,
Early this morning (before 3:00 AM), a 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred approximately 2 miles outside of Monroe, Washington. While the campus sustained no damage from the earthquake, this is a good opportunity to remind students of the following guidance found in the Shoreline Community College Emergency Response plan.
EARTHQUAKE:
In the event of an earthquake, building occupants should immediately seek protection from falling objects by moving under a sturdy desk, a doorway, or near where two walls intersect. Once the earthquake has stopped instructors should inform students that the building will be evacuated and that any personal belongings should be brought out with them.
During an earthquake:
- Stay calm. First and foremost, having an emergency plan will help you remain calm
- Stay put. If you are indoors, stay there. If outdoors, stay there
- Take cover. If indoors, do a “drop and cover” under a desk, table, or bench, or stand alongside an inside wall, in an archway, doorway that does not have a door, or corner. Avoid windows, doorways with a door, bookcases, hanging fixtures, or outside walls until the shaking stops
- If no protection is available, drop to the floor and cover your head with your hands. Make sure to take a “drop and cover” position
- Do not be surprised if the electricity goes out, or if fire alarms and sprinklers go on
After an Earthquake:
- Stay safe and relaxed. Carefully evaluate the situation
- Use caution when moving students and staff to safe area(s).
- Make sure everyone is alright. Take class rosters and account for all students
- Do not move the seriously injured unless they are still in danger. Administer first aid, if necessary
- Wear sturdy shoes in areas near fallen obstacles and broken glass
- Check natural gas, water, and electrical lines for damage
- Do not use the telephone, light switches, matches, candles, or other open flames unless you are absolutely certain there is not natural gas leaking
- Do not touch electrical power lines
- Be prepared for aftershocks

As you enjoy the festivities, I hope you’ll also take a moment to reflect on the purpose of this day: to honor the vision of freedom and equality expressed in the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Join Shoreline Community College for Seattle’s PRIDE Parade Sun., Jun 30. All students, faculty, staff, and friends are welcome to join and march, representing the College.
The parade runs along 4th Avenue in downtown Seattle, beginning at Union Street and running north to Denny Way. Shoreline’s Project Pride Club is sponsoring the College entry in the Pride Parade, which is an annual event attended by thousands of spectators.
This will be a fun event with great exposure for the College. Participants will be handing out Shoreline Community College Pride wristbands to the crowds. LinkedIn is a networking site designed specifically for the business community. However, with the merger of Lynda.com and its extensive video training content, their professional training division called “Linkedin Learning” continues to help grow and develop current technology, business, and creative skills that everyone can benefit from in their careers.
Shoreline Community College has the same educational access to these excellent training tools as we had with Lynda.com and wants to help you build your professional skills. Students, faculty & staff do not have to have a “Linkedin” account nor do they have to bind to a “personal Linkedin account” to use the site.
If prompted, just follow the specific sign-in instructions to continue, “Without connecting” to my Linkedin account.

As before, click the “Sign in with your organization account” then enter your Student, Faculty or Staff email credentials and password.

Student Life is currently accepting applications for two positions for the 2019-2020 academic year: Budget & Finance Officer (ASG) and Media Technician (A&E). The Budget & Finance Officer will help oversee/manage multiple student fee-funded budgets and will help provide overall leadership for the group. The Media Technician will help set-up and oversee audio/visual and tech for club and program events held on-campus. We are looking for someone who is organized and has a good attention-to-detail.

The asphalt on the East Road behind FOSS (Building 5000) and the Gym (Building 3000) will be repaved over the course of three days, between June 4-7. During this time, there will be some fumes localized near the site, similar to any asphalt road pavement work.
On Fri., May 31 you received an email notification to your go.shoreline.edu about this work. Please check this email for instructions regarding steps you can take if you have any sensitivities to this odor.
Please note some ADA parking spaces in this area will be relocated between June 4-12 to temporary locations in the visitor’s lot, PUB loading dock area, adjacent to the PUB dumpster area, and west of Building 4000. Please contact Safety & Security for any parking questions (206-546-4633).
We understand this work may present an inconvenience to the campus community. The crews are working as quickly as possible to reopen the roadway and all nearby lots by June 12. Thank you for your patience while we work to improve this important roadway for all.

Join us in the PUB Lobby (9000 Building) on Thurs., June 6 from 11am – 4pm to celebrate the release of the 2019 edition of Spindrift Art & Literary Journal. Spindrift is a nationwide award-winning journal and has been published every year since 1966. Submissions pour in from around the country, internationally, and from many of Shoreline’s own students and faculty. The journal will be available for purchase for $15 cash. And check the bookstore for past years’ editions.
We hope to see you there!
