german flag.jpgDr. Frank Wendler: DAAD Visiting Professor, Department of Political Science and the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington.

While the United States continues to be a key political partner and ally in Europe, new challenges have arisen recently, including:
• The future economic, political and military partnership between Europe and the U.S.
• The rise of populist politics and anti-immigrant rhetoric in both the U.S. and  Europe

Dr. Wendler, who recently published a book about European regional politics and political polarization, argues that recent developments, including the rise of populism in both the U.S. and in Europe, reflect long-standing challenges since the end of the Cold War rather than entirely new ones.
