Are you interested in web development, graphic design, or marketing?

The library is rehauling its website and we’re inviting students to be part of the UX data collection process. The framework for collecting data will be a UX Cafe where you collect feedback from students while they browse the current website along with various alternative versions.

If you would like to volunteer for this project, please contact lbryant@shoreline.edu with your in-person availability.
You will learn more about HTML, CSS, Javascript, and how to use various CMS to edit a website’s code. Work on this project can be put on your resume and you’ll gain valuable experience too!

Students: Do you want to get paid to write?

The Ebbtide is Shoreline Community College’s premier news outlet, delivering award-winning independent student journalism since 1965. Student fees fund the work and students run The Ebbtide.

Each quarter The Ebbtide typically has 5-8 paid student positions on staff, along with several unpaid staff writers in the Student Newspaper class and occasional contributors from the general student body. In addition to boosting your communication skills, getting paid, and having fun, working for a student newspaper is a desirable addition to a resume or university application.

The Ebbtide has continued to publish during the pandemic, through its online site theebbtide.com, but we have adjusted the duties and titles of some of the paid positions because of the temporary suspension of print editions. We are in an ongoing process of making improvements to the website, and looking for an online editor (details below).

If you’re interested in paid staff positions, or you would just like to learn about journalism and write stories for The Ebbtide, you should:

Enroll in the Student Newspaper class (CMST 245) for at least one credit.

Have staff meeting time available. There are no traditional classes, but you will attend weekly Zoom staff meetings on Mondays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Expect to spend additional time each week on reporting and writing, and communicating with editors during production (usually every other Thursday afternoon). Paid time allowed: Up to 16 hours a week, as arranged with the Editor.

If you aren’t sure about enrolling and want to explore the possibilities, you’re welcome to attend a Zoom staff meeting.

The first meeting of the quarter is this Monday (Sept. 28) at 2:30 p.m.. Email the advisor, Vanessa McVay at vmcvay@shoreline.edu to get a zoom invitation & link, or if you have questions.

Paid jobs in 2020-2021

News Editor (open)

Are you a news junkie? Along with compiling bi-weekly news briefs, the News Editor covers ASG meetings; SCC-based news relating to topics such as administration and curriculum; and any other major developments concerning the college. The News Editor’s reporting may take an investigative turn, depending on the subject and story.

General Assignment Editor (open)

The General Assignment Editor position is new and designed to handle duties and stories in coordination with the News Editor (such as coverage of SCC’s budget, business and finance developments and campus crime and security issues). The News editor job is the first priority for hiring.

These jobs are filled on a quarterly basis, so if you can’t work Fall, check back before the quarter ends to see what might be open in Spring. Students who have taken CMST 245 at least one quarter and have experience in an unpaid staff position have a better chance at paid jobs.

Students can contact the Editor-in-Chief for more information about these paid positions at ebbtide.editor@gmail.com. Faculty can contact the advisor, Vanessa McVay at vmcvay@shoreline.edu.
