As you may be aware, we are updating Multifactor authentication (MFA) across campus to incorporate ctcLink and Canvas.

MFA will be enabled for all Students for access to BOTH ctcLink and Canvas.

This means that you will be required to enter your ctcLink ID and ctcLink password, PLUS an additional verification in order to sign in.

The projected date for the activation of student accounts is: January 18th, 2024

To make sure that your MFA activation goes smoothly, please log into your ctcLink account BEFORE Jan. 18 to verify that your correct mobile phone number is listed.

What is multifactor (MFA) authentication?

MFA is a method for signing in to something using more than one “factor” to prove your identity. This can include things such as usernames/passwords, security questions, one time codes sent to a mobile device or email, and other “factors” available to prove you are the right person associated with the account.

Why do we need MFA?

SBCTC requires MFA for additional security to protect Personally Identifiable Information (PII) contained in ctcLink. Some colleges have already implemented MFA and employees who work at those colleges already have MFA enabled on their accounts.

How do I set up MFA?

The good news is MFA in ctcLink uses the information you already have stored in your ctcLink account. This means the setup process is fairly seamless.  If you have a mobile phone number already associated with your account, you will see the following screens:

Input your username & password:

This is a picture of the ctcLink log in screen

Click “Receive a code via SMS to use the texting option on your mobile phone:

This is a picture of the ctcLink screen where you can request an SMS code.

Enter the code sent to your mobile device:

This is a picture of the ctcLink screen where you enter your SMS code.

If you prefer to use other “factors”, you can click “Verify with something else” on the second screen.  You will see a screen similar to this:

This is a picture of the ctcLink screen where you can request verification methods other than an SMS code.

If you need additional assistance with options on managing your MFA, read and follow the steps in this knowledge base article: Setting Up Your Multi-Factor Recovery Options

Will my personal device be subject to Public Records Requests if I use it for authentication?

No, these messages are transitory and serve no useful purpose after the one-time code expires. Employees are encouraged to delete these messages as soon as possible.

I am frequently signed out of ctcLink. How often will I have to enter MFA in order to sign in?

If you check the “keep me signed in” box (located in 1st screenshot above) when you sign in, your MFA code will be remembered for 16 hours. This setting needs to be checked for each device that you use. Once this is done, you should only have to enter MFA once each day (per device that you use throughout the day).

Thank you for your attention and compliance in this very important update.

If you have further questions or issues during this process, please fill out a support ticket at https://support.shoreline.edu or send an email to Support@Shoreline.edu.

Please review the important financial aid updates below.

2023-2024 Financial Aid

If you have already applied and submitted all required documentation for Winter Quarter financial aid, you should receive an aid offer notification soon if you have not received it already. Disbursement of financial aid money for Winter Quarter begins on January 5.

Students applying now should check that all outstanding documents have been submitted and plan to pay your tuition (or make tuition payment arrangements) if your aid has not been finalized by the tuition deadline of January 3, 2024.

Because the disbursement of financial aid will start on January 5, all financial aid students who have an aid offer notification are protected from being dropped for non-payment.

If you are interested in financial aid for this coming Winter and/or Spring, but haven’t applied yet, there’s still time to apply for 2023-2024 financial aid. If you need assistance or have questions, please visit our financial aid office, M-TH, 8-5pm, and Friday, 8-12 or email us at Financialaid@shoreline.edu.

To explore other funding opportunities, please click here.

2024-2025 Financial Aid Application

Big changes are coming with the 2024-25 FAFSA, which will impact how students and parents are required to complete the application.

We expect that the 2024-2025 aid applications will be available starting on December 31, 2023.

Click here to learn more about changes to the FAFSA.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) can be completed online.

The 2024-2025 financial aid applications are for students who plan to enroll for the 2024-2025 year (Summer 2024, Fall 2024, Winter 2025 & Spring 2025).

Winter Quarter Emergency Aid

The Winter Quarter emergency aid application opens on December 28. The Financial Aid Office will begin disbursing emergency aid on January 5.

Starting Winter quarter emergency aid will be handled through the Benefits Hub. For assistance with the application or questions, students can either schedule an appointment with a Benefits Hub Coach at https://benefitshub.as.me/schedule.php or email emergencyaid@shoreline.edu.

Good morning,

Yesterday we experienced an on-campus internet outage intermittently throughout the morning due to an issue with our upstream fiber connection located in Green Lake.  While this is not an issue that originated at the College, it is one that impacted us.

This morning King County technicians are continuing to do work on the line which has caused a temporary on-campus internet outage again. However, campus is open and all classes today will be running as per usual.

We will keep you posted as we receive further updates.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to remedy the situation.

Have a great day!

Dear Campus Community,

On Thursday, October 5th, the College will be having an all-campus fire evacuation drill. During the drill, all students, staff, faculty, and visitors are required to evacuate from all campus buildings and assemble in the designated evacuation areas. The alarms will activate to begin the drill. Campus Security personnel and Building Marshals will assist at evacuation points and provide directional information. Participation is mandatory if you are on campus.

  • The evacuation locations are designated by a white sign with red lettering entitled “Emergency Evacuation Point” (reference attached photo) along the perimeter of campus.

This is a white sign with red writing that says emergency evacuation point

  • Individuals exiting campus should proceed to the evacuation site closest to their location (map attached, sites marked by blue star).

This is an evacuation map

  • Everyone must immediately evacuate, in a calm and controlled manner.
  • Do not attempt to re-enter buildings until authorized to do so Campus Security personnel or a Building Marshal.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Safety & Security Director Greg Cranson at gcranson@shoreline.edu

Respectfully,

Gregory Cranson

Welcome back to campus! As we work our way through the first week of the quarter, I wanted to take this opportunity to provide some tips from the Department of Safety & Security.

Parking

Permits are required to park on campus for all days each quarter, Monday-Friday from 6:00am-4:00pm, excluding weekends and holidays. Citations with fines are issued for ADA violations, PCC parking violations, Visitor Lot violations, and other illegal/hazardous (fire lane, blocking roadway, not parked in a parking stall, etc.).

Students can purchase parking permits in Student Finance (aka Cashiers). Part-Time employment requests can be sent in by department office. Full-Time employee permit requests must be verified by Dean, Director, etc. Daily permits are also available for purchase at pay stations located at the East Gate, West Gate, in front of Bldg. 7000, in the parking lot west of Bldg. 1600, and on the walkway between Bldg. 2900 and 3000.

Campus Security

We have a uniformed Campus Security Officer on campus and on-duty 24/7/365. Our personnel are trained and equipped to respond to a vast variety of calls that include, but are not limited to, basic first aid, medical emergencies, security emergencies, and calls for assistance.

To reach our team during business hours, call 206-546-4633, or visit the Safety & Security Office in the Foss Building, Room 5102.

After hours or if the office does not answer, the on-duty Campus Security Officer can be reached at 206-235-5860

Courtesy Services

Our department provides vehicle lockout assistance, vehicle jumpstarts, security escorts, and more!

Lost & Found

The official campus Lost & Found is located in the Safety & Security Office, Room 5102. We hold onto items for 3-6 months before disposing of them.

Annual Security and Fire Report (CLERY)

The Annual Security and Fire Report will be available, beginning October 1st, 2023 at https://www.shoreline.edu/safetyandsecurity/logs/default.aspx. For those that would like a physical copy, physical copies are available upon request at the Safety & Security Office in Room 5102, Building 5000 (FOSS).

Upcoming Events

  • Thursday, 10/05, All-Campus Fire Evacuation Drill
  • Saturday and Sunday, 10/07 and 10/08, Shoreline Police Training in Bldg. 2800 (not open to public)
  • Friday, 10/13, Catalytic Converter Marking Event w/Shoreline Police
  • Saturday, 10/21, Gun Buyback Event w/Shoreline Police, Kenmore Police, and King County Sheriff’s Office

Tips

Here are a few tips that can help you in having a wonderful experience here at Shoreline:

  • STOP! If you haven’t already, save the after-hours Campus Security number in your phone now! 206-235-5860.
  • Park in high traffic and well-lit areas.
  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle and remove items from view.
    • Even if a bag only has dirty gym clothes in it, a prowler may break in hoping it contains valuables.
  • If you observe a suspicious person or vehicle on campus, call security.
  • Always keep your phone and photo ID on your person in the event that you need to contact assistance.
  • If you witness or observe concerning behavior or posts on social media, report it to Campus Security by calling the office or after-hours number.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Do not report injuries, criminal activity, or request immediate assistance via email, as email is only monitored sporadically during office hours.

For questions, please come to the Safety & Security Office (5102), call us at: (206) 546-4633 or email: safetyandsecurity@shoreline.edu

Respectfully,

Your Department of Safety & Security

Dear Campus Community,

This morning, just after 8:00am, a fire broke out in Building 2600. One staff member was in the building and safely evacuated after their initial attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful. Our staff member immediately contacted Campus Security and 911, who had previously been notified via our campus fire alarm system.

Campus Security and members of the Facilities department began to set up a perimeter as Shoreline Fire and neighboring partner agencies arrived on scene to begin firefighting operations. The buildings immediately surrounding the fire (2700, 2800, 2900, and the HSAAMCC construction site) were evacuated out of an abundance of caution, to limit exposure to smoke/fumes and in the event the fire jumped structures.

The fire is fully extinguished, and the Shoreline Fire Marshal’s Office and King County Sheriff Fire Investigation Unit have completed their investigations. Director of Safety and Security Greg Cranson will reach out to stakeholders about reentry and salvage.

Personnel from Campus Security, Facilities, and the employee that was present when the fire broke out were all assessed by Shoreline Fire medical personnel for smoke inhalation and thankfully, none required treatment.

Classes and college business will resume in the surrounding buildings (2700, 2800, 2900, HSAAMCC site) on Wednesday, 05/24/2023. Due to damage from this incident, Building 2600 will now remain unoccupied and unused until its preplanned demolition this fall to make way for the new STEAM building.  The college has identified space for classes and labs typically held in Building 2600, and those updates have been passed to instructors and students. Due to the incident, the 2200, 2700, and 2800 buildings have no HVAC. We are working with Puget Sound Energy on a timeline for restoration.

The college is incredibly grateful for the work done by Shoreline Fire and their partner agencies who responded quickly to fight fire. While the loss of equipment and space is unfortunate, material items can be replaced. We are thankful that nobody was injured during the fire.

The college will hold a debrief to determine what went well and identify the areas where we can improve, as the pursuit of providing a safe and secure campus is always our first priority.

Greg Cranson
Acting Director of Safety & Security
