Join us and vote for your favorite submission at the Spindrift Art Jury Show this Wed., Feb. 22 and Thurs., Feb. 23 in the VCT (2000) building.
This year, we’re thrilled to say 55 artists contributed over 225 digital submissions of art for consideration in the Shoreline Community College 2017 Spindrift Art & Literary Journal.
Students and contributors have the opportunity to vote for their favorites (up to 10 ballots!) at the Spindrift Art Jury Show, which will be going on Wed., Feb. 22 and Thurs., Feb. 23 in the VCT (2000) building lobby during building hours.
Literary submissions are being reviewed for selection too. In the next few weeks final decisions for both art and literature will be made for our 2017 journal.

Dear Student,
The College will be closed on Monday, February 20 in observance of Presidents’ Day.
On this holiday, we honor the tradition of courageous leaders who have come before us to ensure our unalienable rights to life, liberty, justice, and equal protection under the law.
I hope you’ll also take a moment this holiday to remember that the qualities of leadership belong to all of us. Each of us can find ways to face challenges, plan for success, lift up others, and be leaders in our own right. It’s in these moments that we express the best of Shoreline.

The start of Winter Quarter 2017 brings the completion of the 2016 Remodel of the 4000 Building. This effort began during the summer of 2015 when the Math Learning Center and The Writing and Learning Studio moved into the 4000 building as a way to centralize student academic success and allow more classrooms to be available for instruction.
During the fall of 2015 and the beginning of 2016, the college invested in a 4000 Building Master Planning effort that involved communication with key faculty and staff who work in the 4000 building; students; and the full college community. The outcome was a multi-year plan for the 4000 Building and a specific 2016 Phase of construction.
The construction started during the summer of 2016 and has been completed as of January 6, 2017 with the final installation of the new doors to welcome students into the new academic learning space with open seating, maximum natural light, centralized tutoring and learning centers, and a grand central ASK Desk that will serve students’ library and research needs. More casual study space has been incorporated throughout the second floor. The Biology and Chemistry Learning Center joined the 4000 building last spring and remains on the second floor, along with the Math Learning Center. Tutoring Services has a brand new home in the southwest corner of the second floor and offers support to all students. The Writing and Learning Studio is on the third floor, which they share with some additional study space. Overall, more than 8,500 square feet of additional student space has been made available.
The first floor has had a few refreshing coats of paint and some study areas incorporated into the hallway. The Student Computer Lab on the first floor remains open and ready to support students with their technology needs.
Our investment in the project was from state and local sources and demonstrates the college’s focus on student academic success. The state contributed $750,000 to the project and the college contributed about that same amount from the capital reserve fund.
Sustainable products were used for many of the remodeled areas and new features including the carpeting, paint, counter tops, baseboards, and the acrylic panels. Of these products, anywhere from 4% to 30% of the material was composed of recycled materials.
The project team wishes to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the students, staff, and faculty who have patiently adjusted to the noise and multiple temporary and permanent relocations during the quarter construction. We appreciate your keeping students and their needs at the heart of this remodel. Your never-ending flexibility helped make this project a success.
Please join us in celebrating the completed remodel at the Grand Re-opening Celebration on January 18 at 12:30 pm in the new casual student learning area known as room 4237.

Note: The library will be closed Thurs., Fri., and Sat. Nov. 24-26 but will re-open on Sun., Nov. 27 from 12-6 p.m.

To accommodate student needs during the busy first week of the quarter, the Shoreline Community College Bookstore (lower floor of the PUB 9000 bldg.) will be open extended hours Wed., Sept. 21 – Tues., Sept. 27. Extended hours are as follows:
Wednesday Sept. 21 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Thursday Sept. 22 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Friday Sept. 23 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Monday Sept. 26 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Tuesday Sept. 27 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.
On Wed., Sept. 28, the Bookstore will return to its regular operating hours of Mon-Thurs., 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Fri., 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Tutoring Services will be CLOSED this Thurs., Sept. 8 and Fri., Sept. 9 due to the absence of both the Program Manager and Coordinator. Students seeking information or hoping to apply for tutoring can do so online at our website.
We will reopen on Mon., Sept. 12, with our normal fall hours of operation:
Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Fri. 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Please note that these hours may be somewhat variable during opening week (September 14-20) as the Program Manager and Coordinator participate in opening week activities, and we expect to be closed for most of Wed., Sept. 14 to engage with our campus colleagues at the Convocation Day events.
At this time, we are still operating out of 1103, but we will notify you all when we make that transition.

It’s an exciting time for the Sustainability and Commuter Options Fee committee (SCOF). If you haven’t already, visit the SCOF site and take a look at the results of last quarter’s Commuter Option Survey.
Last week we held a special meeting where we discussed ORCA card possibilities, installing new water bottle refilling stations, the Transit Riders Union campaign for a reduced fare for college students, the Tree Campus USA Recognition Award program, and Earth Week activities.
