Ebbtide student newspaper wins General Excellence award in Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators contest

The Ebbtide student newspaper received high praise and a General Excellence award last weekend from judges in the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators contest.

Lauding the paper for being “serious, playful, insightful and relevant,” the judges awarded the Ebbtide second place in the prestigious General Excellence category.

This was the Ebbtide’s 8th General Excellence award in 11 years. “If this keeps up, the Ebbtide will need a trophy stand that isn’t just the top of a file cabinet,” Editor in Chief Connor Tee said with a laugh. “Seriously, the staff came together through some unexpected challenges, and I couldn’t be prouder as I leave SCC. The awards are just icing on the cake.”

Last year, the Ebbtide staff won a first-place Sweeps award for earning the most award points across all the individual categories, from news reporting to page design.

This year, award winners in individual categories included:

  • Frances Hui — 2nd place in news reporting for her story on an SCC international student detained at the Canadian border
  • Areeya Tipyasothi, Nellie Ferguson and Coral Nafziger — 1st place in comprehensive coverage for a spread on academic dishonesty
  • Areeya Tipyasothi — 1st place for a profile of last year’s ASG president Winston Lee
  • Kristen Clark — 1st place in commentary for a piece on gun control
  • CJ Priebe — 3rd place in sports news for a story on the women’s basketball team
  • Martin Musialczyk — 3rd place in news photo for a shot of Elena Esquibel’s communication class performing in the PUB.
  • Nellie Ferguson and CJ Priebe – Honorable Mention for a sports feature on SCC’s Cheer squad
  • Aditya Wiputra – Honorable Mention for a feature photo of a drummer in the talent show.

This year’s contest covered community-college work produced March 2017 to March 2018. It was judged by journalism professionals and instructors at local universities.
