Message from President Roberts: Acts of Insurrection at the US Capitol

Dear Student,

Yesterday, we witnessed acts that many have described as an insurrection and an assault against our democracy in Washington, DC. Shoreline Community College joins other colleges and universities and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges in denouncing the anti-democratic actions of the rioters who sieged the Capitol building. Education is foundational to the ideals of democracy and these violent events attacked the sanctity of our democratic process and the peaceful transition of power in our government.

As a community of critical thinkers, we also need to be mindful of the inequities in how those who breached the Capitol yesterday were treated by law enforcement compared to how protesters who peacefully advocate for racial justice in the Black Lives Matter movement are treated. I hope we remain mindful of the language that we and others use to describe and make sense of these events, choosing words that affirm our country’s democratic foundation and our fundamental rights of equal treatment under the law.

In these uncertain and stressful times, please remember that any students in need of mental or emotional support are encouraged to reach out to our Counseling Center (206-546-4594) for assistance.

Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President
