Response to a Bias Incident Report

Dear Student,

On Friday, October 18, a student discovered a racially offensive sticker on the Career Education Options (CEO) job bulletin board in the Workforce office that referred to diversity and white genocide. The sticker was reported to CEO staff, immediately taken down, and given to Safety & Security for investigative purposes.

As our Community Standard Statement declares, we do not tolerate hateful, violent, or discriminatory actions that target any person or group based on their beliefs, customs, identity, of affiliations. While our College respects and protects freedom of speech, we also affirm the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and are steadfastly committed to providing a welcoming and secure environment for all members of our community.

We ask for your assistance in helping us to identify if any other materials of this nature are found anywhere on campus. Shoreline maintains an active Bias Response Team dedicated to reviewing and responding to incidents like this. Please report any and all bias incidents using our bias incident reporting form.

Offensive materials such as this sticker can bring up many feelings for people. If you are in need of support, please know we offer resources to students through the Counseling Center (FOSS Building 5000, Room 5251).

Shoreline is unwavering in its resolve to create an inclusive, diverse and welcoming community, and incidents such as this will not deter us from this important work. We can and will work together to find the best in each other, to bridge our differences, and to treat each other with the respect and kindness that all people deserve.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
