Here are the events happening around campus for the week of May 14. We’re celebrating Multicultural Week.
Mon., May 14
Multicultural Week: Cultivating Healthy Sexual Relationships: PUB 9202
Mon., May 14: 10:30-11:30am
Lifelong will join us to talk about safe sex practices that include topics such as HIV care, negotiating and giving consent when practicing sex, how to have safe sex in a relationship, and setting boundaries.
Students will engage in activities, be able to interact with the presenters, and write down questions anonymously.
College Rep Visit: Table in PUB Lobby
Mon., May 14: 11am-1pm
Representatives from University of Washington: Health Professions will be at Shoreline’s campus to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.

Multicultural Week: Inclusive Listening: PUB 9208

Led by Shoreline faculty Brooke Zimmers & Leslie Potter Henderson. In this interactive workshop, learn listening skills for centering the non-dominant. We will explore dialogue and perspective talking as strategies for dismantling the effects of exclusion.
Multicultural Week: Using Liberation Theater Techniques to Explore Forms of Resistance and Oppression: PUB 9208
Mon., May 14: 12:30-1:20pm
This workshop is structured to introduce concepts and techniques from the Theater of the Oppressed repertoire so the participants can begin to apply them as tools in a practice of personal and collective liberation.
Participants will be taught how to observe, analyze, interrupt, and transform acts of oppression at an individual, interpersonal, and institutional level using a curriculum that incorporates a spectrum of games, exercises, and specific techniques.

Multicultural Week: Breaking Boundaries with Poetry with Da’Sund F. Heller: PUB 9202

Develop your creative expression through poetry. We will use writing prompts and exercises to lead into a discussion about community.
This workshop will be facilitated by current SCC student Da’Sund F. Heller. Da’Sund is a Seattle YouthSpeaks Poet who has qualified in both Rain City and YouthSpeaks Grand Slams.
Multicultural Week: Cece McDonald: PUB 9208
Wed., May 16: 12:30-1:20pm
Cece McDonald is an activist from Minneapolis, Minnesota. McDonald gained international attention in 2012 when she was charged with second-degree manslaughter. A trans woman, she spent 19 months in a men’s prison for defending herself after being assaulted. Her case galvanized national outrage and communities protested the transphobia, racism, and violence perpetrated against trans women of color.
In 2016, actress Laverne Cox produced and released Free CeCe: a documentary that follows McDonald over a period of three years, from her incarceration in 2012 to her release and the aftermath in 2014-2015.
Volunteer drop-in at campus garden: Deep Roots Garden, by 2600/2700 buildings

Drop in and help out at the Deep Roots Community Garden located next to the 2600 building. Come for the whole hour or only 15 minutes. It will feel good to do some tending, weeding, planting, and growing. Volunteers check in at the Greenhouse. Gloves and tools provided.

Multicultural Week: Shoreline Brothers of Color with MJ Washington: PUB 9202

Stop by and speak on the issues we face as men of color here on campus and in our everyday lives. This meeting is a small space where we agree to speak in a space free from judgment, where everything we say stays in the room and what we learn we can take out into the world. We will play a short video clip from the Mask You Live In, a documentary that follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity.
Multicultural Week: Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) Field-Trip: off-site

Join us as we visit NAAM. Several exhibits are available to enjoy such as; Everyday Black, which features contemporary portraits by photographers Jessica Rycheal and Zorn B. Taylor as they explore the intersections and identities that are held within Blackness; and Seattle chapter Black Panther Party: Power to the People recognizes its beginning 50 years ago.

Tech is currently saturated with cis hetero white men, and people who identify otherwise face unique challenges and situations. Come hear stories, tips, and advice from experienced voices working in Tech.

Shoreline Community College Musical Theater program is proud to present Stephen Sondheim’s Company – coming to the Campus Theater in May 2018. From musical theatre’s most renowned composer and the winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, and Best Book, Company is regarded as a trailblazer of the dark-comedy, modern-musical genre.
Set in New York, Company follows five married, once married, or soon to be married couples and their mutual friend, Robert, a 35-year-old bachelor who has been unable to establish a long-term relationship. The couples are presented in a series of vignettes, primarily through Bobby’s eyes, so that we see the less than ideal aspects of commitment. However, can it be that the committed are happy? Bobby learns that relationships aren’t perfect, but are they a necessary part of *Being Alive*?
Featuring a brilliant, brisk, and energetic score containing many of Sondheim’s best-known songs, Company will have audience members seeing reflections of themselves in the relationships on stage.

Kumu Hina is the story of Hina Wong-Kalu, a native Hawaiian teacher and cultural icon who embodies Hawaii’s long-held embrace of mahu – those who embody both male and female spirit – and were traditionally respected as caretakers, healers, and keepers of ancient traditions.

Last year, Mimi lectured and led workshops on the subject of “Contemplative Learning” (incorporating Mindfulness into education) at Thammasat University in Thailand. She will discuss the meaning and application of this powerful pedagogical tool, and how it can benefit students and faculty at Shoreline.

Join us for a free afternoon concert featuring the performances of students enrolled in the Jazz Improvisation class, directed by our award-winning music faculty, Steve Kim. Dear Students,
We have exciting news to share that construction on our new residence hall may begin earlier than expected! To prepare for construction, some student parking spaces will need to be adjusted.
As of Tuesday, May 8, approximately 70 parking spaces near Building 2900 and in the lot next to the West Gate on Innis Arden Way will no longer be available to students. While there is still plenty of parking capacity on campus (including the Greenwood lot), we encourage you to consider parking in the Sears lot near 160th and Aurora, where the College has leased a large number of parking spaces. Free campus shuttles run between the Sears lot and the College each weekday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
We understand that this construction project may present an inconvenience to some students. In appreciation of your understanding, we will offer a full parking pass refund to all spring quarter students who park in the Sears lot for the remainder of the quarter. To receive a refund, please bring your spring quarter parking pass to the cashier on the second floor of Building 5000 (FOSS) by Friday, May 18.
We also ask that all students avoid parking on any residential streets near campus, as those parking spaces are designated for the residents of the neighborhoods. Shoreline Community College is proposing the repeal of the following chapters in Washington Administrative Code:
-Chapter 132G-160 (Admissions & Registration Procedures)
-Chapter 132G-300-010 (Grievance Procedure, Title IX)
These rules are being proposed for elimination based on existing College policy already in place which reflects model language for both areas of these operational procedures. In addition, while College policy is required for these areas, they are not required to be codified under Washington Administrative Code per RCW 34.05.010(16). Interested parties can find the notices of proposed rulemaking online.
In compliance with RCW 34.05.320, the College is providing an opportunity for public comments as follows:

Drop in and help out at the Deep Roots Community Garden located next to the 2600 building. Come for the whole hour or only 15 minutes. It will feel good to do some tending, weeding, planting, and growing. Volunteers check in at the Greenhouse. Gloves and tools provided.

The Faculty Senate Council presents the lecture: When ‘Free Speech’ Is Actually Its Opposite. Shon Meckfessel, English professor at Highline College, will give a talk on the limits, perils, and contradictions of “free speech” discourse, especially in light of how alt-right groups have used First Amendment Rights against universities in order to call into question the values of inclusion, diversity, and anti-discrimination.
This event emerges from the need expressed by faculty, staff, administrators, and students to gain a more critical understanding of “free speech,” to learn more about the boundaries of what “free speech” means, and to take a critical stance against white supremacist actions within and across college campuses.
