Today we have a few important updates from our Campus Safety Team as we continue working to create a welcoming, supportive, and responsive environment for everyone here at Shoreline.

A New Name: Campus Safety

Green patch that says "Campus Safety" in yellow.

You may have already noticed the first change.  The Safety and Security department is now known as Campus Safety.  This is a name that many colleges are also implementing, and the update better reflects a people-centered approach focused not just on security, but on care, visibility, and connection across campus.

Staffing Updates

We’re also pleased to share some updates to our Campus Safety team:

Have you met Bret yet?

Photo of Bret, the Director of Campus Safety.

Bret joined Shoreline College earlier this year as Director of Campus Safety, bringing a strong background in emergency preparedness and a deep commitment to supporting campus communities. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Director of Emergency Preparedness, Health & Safety at Edmonds College, where he helped ensure campus readiness, responded to calls for service, and supported the safety and well-being of students, employees, and visitors.

Bret is originally from Snohomish and graduated from Snohomish High School in 2003. Following graduation, he served on active duty in the United States Coast Guard for 10 years, with duty stations across the Great Lakes in Michigan, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the Oregon Coast.

After his honorable discharge, Bret pursued his education using his Post-9/11 GI Bill, enrolling at Edmonds College in 2017. He went on to earn both an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) and a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS). During this time, he was appointed VA Program Manager at the Veterans Resource Center, where he supported veterans and their dependents in achieving their educational goals and navigating VA education benefits.

Bret later returned to serve as Assistant Director of Emergency Preparedness, Health & Safety at Edmonds College, where his work focused on emergency planning, accident and injury prevention and response, fire and life safety, and broader campus safety and security operations.

In his free time, Bret enjoys spending time with his two cats, watching sporting events, and falling asleep to true crime shows in the background.

New Uniforms

Starting this month, you may also notice our team in new uniforms. These updates include our new Shoreline branding, better quality materials that will last longer, and a look that helps distinguish our team from other groups that frequent campus. The goal is simple: to make Campus Safety more visible, approachable, and recognizable to our community.

We’re grateful for the work this team does every day to support our campus. As always, if you have questions or would like to learn more about Campus Safety services, please don’t hesitate to reach out at campus.safety@shoreline.edu

Shoreline Fire Department & partner agencies will be on campus training at buildings 2300 and 800 from 04/13 through 04/17. There will be multiple fire engines and apparatus on campus during these times.

With both of these buildings being demolished in the near future, this presents an opportunity for emergency responders to practice “real life” scenarios.

You may see firefighters on the roofs practicing vertical venting (cutting holes in the roof), rappelling from elevated surfaces, and also using simulated smoke (fog machine) to resemble low visibility conditions. They will not actually be setting anything on fire.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Shoreline College Safety & Security

King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) SWAT will be conducting training at Building 800 on 04/08 & 04/09 between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

This is a great opportunity for KCSO to demonstrate proficiency in practical skills and tactics without having to worry about damaging the building itself. As many of you are aware, with the completion of the Bracken 8000 building, Building 800 is now scheduled to be demolished in the near future.

During these days you may notice officers in dark green uniforms, marked/unmarked police vehicles, and may hear loud noises throughout the day. KCSO will also be deploying signage on the perimeter of the area as well as safety observers.

The flyer below from KCSO describes the training more in depth as well as a point of contact from the Sheriff’s Office.

If you have any questions, you can reach Shoreline College Safety & Security at safetyandsecurity@shoreline.edu.

This morning, an issue related to our campus construction projects caused the gas line sensor feeding into Building 1700 to trip, resulting in a temporary loss of heat. The issue has been addressed, and gas is now safely running through the building. Classes and work will continue as normal through this afternoon.

The gas line will need to be shut off later today in order to make repairs, which means the building will be too cold for evening classes.  Please check Canvas for updated classroom assignments.   While there is no danger to students at this time, we will be relocating all evening classes scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. in Building 1700 to alternate areas. Building 1700 will close at 3:30 pm today.

Please note that as a result, the roadway around Building 1700 will be completely closed today while repairs are underway. During this closure, the only access to Building 1800 will be via the walk ramp on the west side of the building, adjacent to the Building 1900/2000 roundabout.

Updates will be provided as made available.

On Wednesday, 10/22, law enforcement will be conducting an all-day training exercise at a nearby location. As a part of this training, the King County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, Guardian 2, will conduct flight operations in and around Shoreview Park.

The college hopes that this advanced notification will assist with reducing or limiting the concerns of those who may witness the flight operations. We would like to thank our partners at Shoreline Police and the King County Sheriff’s Office for reaching out and providing us with this information in advance.

Questions can be directed to Safety & Security by email at safetyandsecurity@shoreline.edu at any time.
