The Student Learning Experience Coordinating Committee (SLECC) continues its efforts towards streamlining and improving the student experience. One SLECC work group focuses on providing better options for student placement, and over the past year has increased communication about multiple methods available for placement, including high school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, Smarter Balanced, AP, IB and GED scores (see http://www.shoreline.edu/placement for more information).
Two NEW options will available on a limited basis starting December 4th.
ALEKS for math ALEKS is a computer-based assessment tool that also provides students an opportunity to practice and brush up on key competencies that will be used for placement into math classes. One practice test and up to four proctored placement tests are provided. ALEKS will use the results of students’ test attempts to identify topics and create an individualized learning module to help them review. The cost for ALEKS is $20 (payable on the ALEKS web site via credit/debit card or at the cashier).
Directed Self-placement for English Directed Self-Placement (or DSP) is not a test, but a series of questions and tasks in which students reflect on their own skills and confidence related to reading and writing. Based on their responses, a recommendation is provided about the English course that would be best for them. Research has demonstrated that outcomes for students taking part in DSP are as good as or better than traditional testing methods. DSP is offered free of charge.
Timeline and plan These tools have been piloted in several areas and starting December 4th will be used more broadly for students who need placement in either English or Math.
Starting in March of 2018, these two tools will replace Accuplacer as the primary assessment methods for English and math, to be used only if alternate methods of placement such as high school transcripts, GED scores, AP/IB scores, or SAT/ACT scores are not available.
Shoreline Community College’s Communications & Marketing Department is looking for a part-time Social Media Assistant (up to 17 hours per week).
Job description:
Under direct supervision of the communications consultant and other marketing department staff, the social media assistant will schedule content for approval for Shoreline Community College’s social media channels, ensuring content is up to date, brand focused, and follows best practices.
In conjunction with the communications consultant, the social media assistant will respond to questions, concerns, and comments received via social channels, and will seek out ways to engage with and grow the college’s social following. The position will assist with campus event photography/videography, and will assist, as needed, in the creation of graphics, photos, and videos for distribution on social channels.
Job Duties:
Schedule content to the college’s social media channels including (but not limited to) Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube
Monitor community comments and conversations happening on social and respond as appropriate
Create engaging written, graphic, and video content for social that promotes audience interaction and participation
Take photos/video at campus events with an eye for social distribution, and upload photos to a digital resource management system
Use photo-editing software to do basic photo editing and manipulation
Other office duties as assigned
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Working knowledge of and comfort with all major social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Knowledge of or ability to learn emerging social channels, such as Snapchat.
Skill in writing, editing, and proofreading with a clear communication style, proper grammar, and the ability to adopt and emulate the College’s voice.
Basic working knowledge of and comfort level with photography equipment.
Knowledge of photo editing software for basic photo manipulation.
Knowledge of or ability to learn a social media scheduling tool, such as SproutSocial, Hootsuite, Buffer, etc.
Ability to take direction but to also self-motivate and self-direct as needed
Detail oriented
Desired Qualifications and Experience: High school graduation or equivalent AND 1-2 years of professional social media or photography experience.
This is a part-time (up to 17 hours per week), non-benefitted position at a pay rate of $13.60 an hour. This is NOT a work-study position, and applicants DO NOT have to qualify for work-study assistance. Schedule can be flexible, but all work must be completed on-site at Shoreline Community College between the hours of 8am-4:30pm, M-F.

Fall Choir Concert: Off campus at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach Thurs., Dec. 7: 7-9pm Shoreline Singers and Chamber Chorale will be presenting a concert of choral music with two purposes. The first is to feature our very own Jeff Kashiwa’s multi-faceted talents on woodwind instruments in collaboration with piano, organ, and vocals. Sure to move the spirit, Mr. Kashiwa is known around the world for his musicianship and emotive playing. These sets will feature pieces by Ola Gjeilo, John Rutter, and a Northwest local, John Muehleisen. Second, we will be previewing four movements of the Vivaldi Gloria, for which we will be joining Edmonds Community College and Edmonds-Woodway High School in a collaboration to perform the entire major work with orchestra! The students are excited to come together to present these amazing pieces!

This is their time to shine in the spotlight and to have an opportunity to perform in front of their peers. Students are chosen by their instructors to perform at the recitals, and the criteria require students to have been involved in a music ensemble throughout the quarter. This is an invaluable experience for our students to build confidence musically through focused preparation, and the opportunity to perform in front of an audience helps them develop their stage presence. Everyone is welcome to attend in support of our student performers.

Please join Shoreline Veterans Programs in our annual winter clothing drive. We are soliciting donations of NEW clothing items such as warm socks, winter gloves, thermal pants, and shirts, etc. Donations can be dropped off now through Fri., Dec. 15, in a designated barrel outside the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) in FOSS, Room 5225A. All donations will go directly to the Seattle Stand Down and local shelters to assist homeless veterans.
