Zak Helenske is a potter who is interested in the development of form and the exploration of pattern, referencing architectural situations and social observations. He uses geometry as a language to communicate ideas of space, proximity, occupation, and structure.
Pots are some of the objects that connect us across cultures and across time. Helenske is interested in the anti-monumental and challenged by the spatial balance between pottery, architecture, and community.

Are you interested in being able to assist someone experiencing a mental health related crisis or non-crisis situation and where to turn for help?
Before you can know how to help, you need to know when to help.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognized program designed to build mental health literacy within our communities — or a basic understanding of what different mental health illnesses and addictions are, how they can affect a person’s daily life, and what helps individuals experiencing these challenges get well.
You will learn about:
· Depression and mood disorders
· Anxiety disorders
· Trauma
· Psychosis
· Substance Use disorders
· How to help someone who may be experiencing thoughts of suicide or harm
Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency — the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well.
Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack — even with no clinical training — becoming a Mental Health First Aider will train you to provide initial help to people experiencing mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, and substance use disorders as well as how to help someone who may be experiencing thoughts of harm or suicide.
This 9-hour training is FREE to Shoreline Community College employees and students and will be offered in two (2) – 4.5-hour sessions:
Friday, October 6 AND Friday, October 13 from 11:30 am – 4:00 pm (Bring your lunch – an afternoon snack will be provided).
You MUST attend BOTH training sessions to receive a MHFA handbook and become a certified Mental Health First Aider.

The Changing Face of Vietnamese Migration – Personal Tales of Challenge and Success

Rita Zawaideh, Founder, Salaam Cultural Museum/Syrian Medical Missions

This unique non-profit organizes medical teams that travel to Syrian refugee camps in Jordan and Greece. They also collect clothing, furniture, household affects and medical supplies for refugees in these camps, as well as those who have resettled in WA State. The desire to help others transcends politics, religion and sectarian tensions. Rita also has advice for those of us who want to help.

The phrase “think global, act local” is a call to arms of local activism. It is probably most strongly associated with environmental issues, but has been used in many other policy realms as well, including trade, immigration, transportation, healthcare, and education. Mayor Marilyn Strickland argues that there has been a shift from national to local governments such as Tacoma in seeking progress on these issues.

Inspired, informed and influential, GenR members support the IRC through advocacy, networking and fundraising activities.
Diverse Voices in the Military: Vietnam and Current Era Veterans

Cybersecurity: the New Frontier for Security Policy

Justin was part of the team of policy fellows tasked with completing a cybersecurity project for the Microsoft Corporation. Their research assisted in the design and implementation of a Digital Geneva Convention. Dovetailing with that work, Justin took part in the 2017 Jackson School Rome, Italy Task force. He presented his research findings on the need for US-EU Transatlantic cybersecurity. Justin will share his personal story that took him from the U.S. military, Shoreline Community College, the UW Jackson School, and to Europe on his way to earning Associate and Bachelor degrees.

Solo Travel in Myanmar: Pictures and Stories from Afar

Brooke traveled alone in Myanmar for three weeks last year during winter break. She will share her photography, stories and lessons learned about Myanmar, about being a woman traveling alone, and about traveling in the age of social media and how it impacts the travel experience.

Your insurance can be billed for this immunization – please bring your insurance information or you will need to pay $30.00 the day of the clinic – CASH ONLY.

To facilitate the needs of students and their families in preparation for the start of Fall quarter, parking on campus will be free Sept. 18 – 27. No fees are required to park Sept. 18 – 27, and no citations will be issued for not paying parking fees. We ask that visitors to campus do still park in the appropriate parking areas during this period of free parking. If you or anyone you know still need to register for classes, this is a great time to take advantage of the free parking and come on down to campus to get registered now!
Safety & Security will post signage on the parking machines on Free Parking Days.

Late registration has been proven to have a negative impact on a student’s ability to be successful in a course. Because Shoreline Community College is committed to student success, the College is making a significant change to the timeline for adding classes after the quarter begins. Beginning Fall Quarter 2017, students may add classes through the first five instructional days of the quarter only.
Fall 2017 dates:
Wednesday, September 27 – First day of classes
Tuesday, October 3 – Last day to add classes, last day to register online
Tuesday, October 10 – Last day for late enrollment, Petition for Late Enrollment required
Adding a class during the second week of the quarter is now considered “late enrollment.”* Late enrollment will be permitted only in rare and unusual circumstances. Requests will require a Petition for Late Enrollment form be submitted to the instructor, and will be allowed only by special permission from the course instructor and the division dean. The deadline for late enrollment will be the last day of the second week of the quarter. For Fall Quarter 2017, the last late enrollment date will be Tuesday, October 10.
*Exceptions to the quarterly late-enrollment timeline will include:
- Enrollment into late starting and continuous enrollment courses
- Section changes (with instructor approval)
- Re-registration after drop for non-payment (with instructor approval)
- Registration using the state employee or senior citizen tuition waiver (with instructor approval).

The Parent Child Center at Shoreline Community College offers child care and early learning services to student parents. The PCC serves children 6 weeks of age to kindergarten. Child care subsidies are accepted and student discounts are offered on tuition.

Wed., Sept. 20 is the last day to register for the free DACA Renewal Legal Clinic and Q&A being held on Everett Community College’s campus Fri., Sept. 22 from 6-9 p.m. at the Jackson Conference Center located at 2000 Tower Street in Everett, WA.
We are encouraging DACA recipients whose document is expiring between September 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018 to register for this legal clinic via email to Giselle Cárcamo at gcarcamo@ipjc.org by September 20 so we can set the time of their appointment.

Dear community members, providers, and partner organizations:
Responding to a community need for organizing a DACA-related event in Snohomish County, the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center has reached out to our partners at the Washington Dream Coalition (WDC), Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP), Colectiva Legal del Pueblo and the Washington State Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) to assist DACA recipients who qualify for renewal in this underserved area.
Everett Community College has generously offered space and resources for us to host a free DACA Renewal Legal Clinic and Q&A that will take place on Friday, September, 22 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Everett Community College, Jackson Conference Center located at 2000 Tower Street Everett, WA 98201.
We hope to reach out to young adults in Snohomish and Skagit counties to participate in the legal clinic, but any DACA recipients will be welcomed until we reach capacity.
This event will be two-fold: while lawyers are assisting DACA recipients with their paperwork, members of the Washington Dream Coalition and Colectiva will give important updates and provide resources on continuing education and organizing for action to community members interested in the topic that are not necessarily participating in the clinic.
