Reminder! Deadline to enter the International Education Week photo contest is Tues., Oct. 25

To celebrate International Education Week 2016, International Education is hosting a series of events, including a Photo Contest. The theme of this year’s photo contest is “travel”.

Travel can be going up north to visit the grandparents. Rick Steves says travel can be a political act. Travel is something people do for fun, for education, for work. We travel across borders, and we travel within our own countries. Submit a photo that captures one of your ideas about travel. Maybe you’ll win a prize.

The Contest is open to ALL Shoreline students. Each submitted photograph must be accompanied by a brief caption/title relating to the photo and the theme. The photograph must be a single original photo taken by the Contest entrant.

DEADLINE for Submission: Tuesday, October 25th, 2016.

Winners will be announced on November 3rd, 2016. Enter online here.

Great Washington Shakeout Drill at 10:20 on Thurs., 10/20

Campuswide Earthquake Drill on 10/20/16

Where will you be at 10:20 a.m. on Thursday? Join us for the Great Washington Shakeout!

All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to “drop, cover, and hold” wherever you are on campus at 10:20 a.m. On Thursday, October 20, 2016. Here’s what to do:

• Shoreline Community College will send a Rave Alert test message the morning of the Great Shakeout to remind you to participate at 10:20 a.m. (You can update your communication preferences here.)

• Faculty members: Please plan to devote 5 minutes of class to this statewide drill at 10:20 a.m. And encourage your students to take part in it.

• At 10:20 a.m., drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on for 30 seconds. Then remind your friends and colleagues to review Shoreline’s emergency plan to be prepared in the event of a real earthquake.

• From 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the PUB lobby, please stop by for a special demonstration by Safety & Security of our Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and Stryker evacuation chairs.

AVID Fair on campus Thurs., Oct. 20

Shoreline will be hosting an AVID Fair (Advancement via Individual Determination) Thurs., Oct. 20 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The fair will be held in the PUB Main Dining Room with 30 colleges representing their school for 20 high schools who will be attending. We anticipate hosting potential students to our campus from as far away as Walla Walla and Olympia. Shoreline Community College current students are encouraged to talk to four-year college representatives as well.

The Quiet Dining Room will be used as a hospitality suite for college representatives, high school counselors, and teachers. Every effort will be made to provide ample seating and eating areas for our current students. This is a three-hour block of time that will provide many to see our beautiful campus and plan on attending Shoreline Community College.

Join us for a Happy Hour in honor of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Wed., Oct. 19

In honor of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, join Counseling Services for Happy Hour in the PUB – 9208 on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm.

Enjoy a FREE non-alcoholic drink as well as receive information about how alcohol affects our bodies and how we can drink more responsibly!

Computers will be available to take eCheck Up to Go, an alcohol use screening/intervention tool, and an officer from Shoreline PD will conduct field sobriety testing with vision impairment goggles.

Sign up for the Talent Show Auditions, Nov. 2-4

Our Annual Talent Show is right around the corner! We encourage those with a variety of talents to audition. Whether that be stand up, a traditional cultural dance, poetry, or anything you’d consider to be your special talent. Auditions will run November 2-4 from 12-2 p.m. in the Fishbowl (PUB 9202). Sign-up sheets will be up on the 3rd floor of the PUB (9000 building) at the front desk of the Student Life Center.

The Talent Show performance will be on Thurs., November 17 from 12-2 p.m., and participation also requires commitment to attending rehearsals prior to the performance. We encourage anyone interested to participate and have a great time sharing a piece of yourself with Shoreline. If you have any questions feel free to contact SLCevents3@shoreline.edu.

Community Read: Octavia’s Brood Kickoff event Thurs., Oct. 20

We’re continuing our Community Read this year with Octavia’s Brood! We’ll be meeting in the PUB three times a quarter to discuss/analyze/work with/enjoy the short stories in this socially conscious anthology of science fiction stories inspired by Octavia Butler.

We’re kicking off the Community Read this Thurs., Oct. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the PUB’s fishbowl.

Having read the stories isn’t necessary to attend, but free books are available for all students who sign up for Community Reads.

Batik workshop with Nicholas Sironka, Visual Arts Bldg., Room #2068
Fri., Oct. 21: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Nicholas Sironka, a former Fulbright scholar, was born in Narok, in the Rift Valley province of Kenya. Sironka teaches the techniques and history of Batik art, along with an understanding of traditional Maasai culture.

Students will learn the technique of Batik and engage in creating a large Batik painting. Light refreshments will be provided.
