Congratulations, Graduates!
Join us in celebrating your achievements by participating in the Fifty-Second Commencement of Shoreline Community College honoring the Class of 2016 on June 5, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Main Gymnasium, Building 3000. You should be proud of what you have accomplished, so think about sharing this special event with your family, friends, faculty, and other students.
Everything you need to know about starting the process to walk at Commencement on June 5th is included below and on the Commencement 2016 Important Information sheet. Caps and gowns will be on sale at the Shoreline Community College Bookstore in the lower level of the PUB on Monday, May 9th and will continue to be available for sale through Friday, May 27th. All guests are required to have tickets, which also will be distributed through the Bookstore May 9th-27th.

COMMENCEMENT 2016 IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Planning on participating in the 2016 Commencement Ceremony? Here’s what you need to know:
- Intent to walk – All students participating in the Commencement Ceremony need to complete a one page form by end of day May 26th (available May 9th in the SCC Bookstore). Up to three guest tickets will be offered to students completing the form. Requests for additional tickets will be tracked on a list in the order received. Guest tickets remaining after May 26th will be disbursed from the list in the Dean of Students Office, Room 5202A, until they are gone. Commencement regalia will be required, including cap (with tassel) and gown. These will be available for purchase from Monday, May 9thth through Friday, May 27th for $ 34.99 (plus tax) at the bookstore on the first floor of the PUB.
- Accommodations – Please contact the Office of Special Services (206-546-4545), Room 5226 in the FOSS Building) if you are graduating and will need accommodations at the ceremony.
- Rehearsal for Commencement will be on Friday, June 3rd, at 1:30 p.m. in the College’s gymnasium (Building #3000). Please report to the large gym (on the main level) for rehearsal. This is extremely important so you will know the procedures for Sunday.
- Commencement Ceremony is on Sunday, June 5th, at 2:00 p.m. in the College’s large gym (on the main level). Graduates should plan to arrive at 1:30 p.m. and report to the lower level of the gymnasium (Building #3000). Please make arrangements to leave personal items such as purses and backpacks with your guests, as there will be no secure place to leave them in the gymnasium.
- Tickets – All guests are required to have tickets and will be checked at the door. Children attending will need tickets. Please remind your guests to bring their tickets with them. Guests without tickets will be directed to the overflow area in the small gym for viewing the ceremony on a monitor, as space allows. Lost tickets are not replaceable.
- Seating – Guests should arrive early since seating is first come, first served. Ticket holders arriving prior to the ceremony will be directed to the bleachers. However, late arrivals will be directed to the overflow area outside of the gym. There will be limited designated seating areas for people with mobility impairments or using wheelchairs. Please let an usher know if you need accessible seating.Accommodations. Please inform The Office of Special Services (206.546.4545, Room 5226 in the FOSS Building) if you have a guest who will need accommodations. Guests are also welcome to let an usher know if they have special needs.
- Sign Language Interpreter – There will be an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter who will stand to the right of the stage. There will be a designated area for people using the interpreter on the right hand side of the gym. Please sit in this section if you will be using the interpreting services during the ceremony.
- Photos – For professional photos, including the traditional receiving-of-the-diploma photo, go to gradimages.com and click on the Pre-Event Registration tab to register. Proofs will be sent to you. There is no obligation to purchase photos, and your personal information will not be sold.
- Reception – Following the ceremony, there will be a reception in the main dining hall of the Pagoda Union Building (9000) with dessert and beverages. A setting for photographs will be provided. There also will be opportunities to talk with the commencement speakers, meet college faculty and enjoy the company of other students.
- NOTE: Parking will be free on Sunday, June 5, 2016.

Shoreline Community College presents this interactive whodunit mystery musical in Steampunk style.
The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a hilarious, interactive whodunit mystery musical that allows the audience to enter the action and become the ultimate detectives. The show is based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name. In small town of Chesterham, England, the young and charming Edwin Drood has been mysteriously murdered. But by whom? His leering romantic rival, John Jasper? The infamous purveyor of opium and vice, Princess Puffer? The mysterious Landless twins, newly arrived from Ceylon? Or someone else even more dastardly and villainous? Dickens passed away before he was able to reveal the culprit. Rupert Holmes’ award-winning musical solves this predicament by asking the audience to choose which character is the killer by putting it to a vote. Staged in metatheatrical manner by the Shoreline Community College Musical theater department, we have crafted a cast full of colorful characters while reflecting the modern world we live in today—Steampunk elements and gender bent roles. This charming and inventive musical is sure to intrigue and entertain any musical or mystery lover.
All actors play two parts. Each plays an actor of the Music Hall Royale and also the character he or she plays in their production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Shoreline Community College will have a scheduled Evacuation Exercise of the 5000 Building on Wed., May 25, 2016. The intent of the exercise is to practice the quick evacuation of all three levels to ensure that, in the event of a true emergency, our campus members feel confident in how to respond. While this may be a brief disruption in our day, the value of practicing what to do and where to go is immeasurable.
Several Building Evacuation Monitors (trained volunteer employees) will take part in the exercise and will assist security officers with the evacuation. Please follow their direction and lead. When the alarm sounds on May 25, safely and quickly exit the 5000 Building and proceed to the nearest evacuation site. Signage outside the 5000 Building will indicate we are conducting a training exercise.
Please share this information with occupants of the building. While this is a practice exercise, we anticipate everyone’s commitment to evacuate. As the Security Department is on the first level of the building, please be advised that Security office staff will also be required to exit the building.

Learning what to do in the event of an emergency saves lives. Many employees and some students have completed the Get Ready Take Action – All-Hazards Emergency Preparedness Training, either in person or online. Many have viewed the posted training videos for a violent event in progress, or completed additional courses such as Incident Command 100 and 200 for Higher Education. Some have created small emergency kits for their car or workspace. As a community, we continue to strive towards being prepared to face an emergency event.

Collective Sci-Fi Writing Workshop: Walidah Imarisha, adrienne maree brown, and Gabriel Teodros will lead participants through a collective story-telling/writing workshop where you create collective and individual stories based on current political issues.
Sci-Fi & Direct Action Training: Participants will use familiar stories of other worlds (such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Oz, Harry Potter, etc.) to design direct action campaigns that parallels the world we are fighting for in the here and now. By the end of the session, regimes will be toppled, evil forces vanquished and solid skills in direct action organizing developed.

Roger Fernandes is a member of the Lower Elwha Band of the S’Klallam Indians from the Port Angeles, Washington, area. Roger has been storytelling for about seven or eight years. The stories he started with were simple legends. Over the years, he has moved into telling myths, creation stories, flood stories, and hero stories. In sharing these types of stories Native people can teach non-Natives about the aspects of their culture that go beyond food, shelter, and clothing. These stories actually define the culture of the tellers.

Join us for the Opening Reception of the Combined Club Show this Thurs., May 19 from 4-6 p.m. in the Art Gallery in the Admin bldg. (1000) lobby.
Four Shoreline Community College visual arts clubs come together in this exhibition to display artwork created by students involved in club activities throughout the year. Photography Club, Art Club, VCT Club, and Clay Club members present their best work in ceramics, printmaking, photography, digital imagery, painting, drawing, and sculpture. These clubs are open to new members from the entire campus community.
The Combined Club Show runs now through June 24.

Shoreline Community College is hosting its Annual Athletic Banquet and Silent Auction on June 10 at 6:30pm in the PUB Main Dining Room. This banquet celebrates all of the Academic and Athletic success of our Shoreline student-athletes from the 2015-16 school year.
The event begins with a silent auction at 6:30pm. Our Shoreline coaches, Athletic Director Steve Eskridge, and the Athletic department staff will be auctioning off gift baskets as a fundraiser for Shoreline Athletics. The auction is followed by dinner and awards at 7:30pm.
Tickets for this event are $20 and include dinner. Seniors, students, children, and Shoreline Community College staff/faculty can get a discounted ticket for $15. All Shoreline Community College student-athletes receive free admission to this event. If you would like to attend you can pick up your ticket in the Athletic Department Offices in the 3000 Building.
