Shoreline’s 2nd annual Queer Film Festival kicks off Mon., Feb. 1 with a screening of KUMU HINA, “a uniquely Hawaiian love story.” The film shows at 12:30 p.m. in the PUB 9208.
KUMU HINA is a powerful film about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernized society of modern day Hawaii. It is told through the lens of an extraordinary Native Hawaiian who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an honored and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader.

College representatives from City University of Seattle and the University of Washington will be on Shoreline’s campus in the PUB lobby Mon., Feb. 1 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.

- Options for creating an Educational Plan for your program of study

Mon., Feb. 1 is the last day students can add a class to their Winter quarter course load. The signature of both the class instructor and the Dean of the program are required to do so, so if you’re planning on adding an extra class, get it done today!

One of our most popular courses, Philosophy and Film, is back this quarter and is F-R-E-E! The Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) is taught by William Lindenmuth and starts Mon., Feb. 8.
This course will examine a variety of philosophical arguments through the medium of film. It will consist of video lectures, readings, and lively discussion. Students will engage a wide range of exciting thinkers, issues, and movies with the goal of understanding both how our world is and how we want it to be. The Shoreline Piano Series is back with Shoreline music faculty Dr. Jensina Oliver joined by Sergio Pallottelli on flute Sun., Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. in the Main Campus Theater.Sergio is flying in from Houston for the concert – he is an international performer and teacher. The duo will perform pieces by Mozart, Debussy, Paganini, and even some tangos by Gardel!
As usual, the concert proceeds go directly to the Shoreline Community College Piano Scholarship Fund to build our scholarship program for music students in need of financial assistance.
Ticket prices are as follows:
General admission – $15
Shoreline Community College faculty and staff, Seniors, and other students – $10
Shoreline Community College students with ID – $5

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association honored nine student-athletes with their annual Golden Shoe Award and Shoreline Dolphins’ speedster Sarah Casel made the list!
The NFCA Golden Shoe award is presented annually to the player determined to be the most outstanding base stealer from an NFCA member institution in each of the following divisions: NCAA (Divisions I,II, and III), NAIA, NJCAA (Divisions I,II, and III), Cal JC, NWAC and high school. A committee comprised of elected head coaches in each of the 10 represented divisions selects the winner of their respective award.
Casel was named the Golden Shoe Award winner for the NWAC. She led the NWAC with 49 stolen bases on just 52 attempts, 12 more stolen bases than her closest competitor. Casel finished 2015 ranked second in the NWAC with a .554 batting average and led the Phins with 62 hits and 44 runs scored.
Casel returns to the Phins for her Sophomore season in 2016 and is already receiving recruiting interest from Seattle University, Oregon State University, Monmouth University and Western Oregon University.
