global eyes
Join us Wed., Nov. 18 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) for a talk by Shoreline’s own Prof. Diana Knauf titled “Cambodia: A Country of Contradictions.”

For most, Cambodia evokes one of two striking images; the majesty of the ancient Ankor Wat or the Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge era (1975-1979). Come expand your view of this beautiful, sometimes historically troubled and now quickly developing country – there is far more about Cambodia worth knowing.

As with most nations, issues abound: Socio-economic imbalances exist between rural and urban areas, and when combined with the lack of opportunities for employment, education, and safe-migration, issues such as human trafficking arise. Nongovernmental organizations may have sincere hopes of helping, but are they effective? How can one move forward in our fast paced world and yet still protect rich cultural traditions and the environment? In a country determined to move beyond the recent historical events, things move awfully fast, sometimes at a cost to the environment and to its citizens.

Diana Knauf has made two trips to Cambodia (most recently this summer) where she spoke with experts and observed first-hand the beauty and troubles of Cambodia. Join us in discussing this country of contradictions with her. For more information about Dr. Knauf, visit our biographies page.

transgender
Please join Project Pride and the Arts and Entertainment Board on Wed., Nov. 18 in the main lobby of the PUB at 12:30 p.m. to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance and acknowledge that Black Trans Women are one of the most targeted groups in the United States.

According to BlackLivesMatter, the average life expectancy for Black Trans Women is 35 years. Please see this article for details of the high number of Black Trans Women killed so far in 2015.

Despite the recent epidemic of violence against Trans people in general, and Black Trans Women in particular, violent targeting of the trans community has been met with silence and erasure.

End the silence. Join us on Wed., Nov. 18 at 12:30 p.m. in the PUB lobby.

The week of Nov. 14-20 is Transgender Awareness Week. Click here to learn more about what it means to be Transgender and click here to see how you can help be an ally to the Transgender community.

High winds on Tuesday morning, Nov. 17, 2015 toppled a tree that hit a Metro bus on Innis Arden Way NE, just east of the main entrance to Shoreline Community College.

The driver of the bus was taken to a local hospital by Shoreline Fire District personnel. Other public safety officials at the scene said the driver’s injuries did not appear to be serious and that there were no passengers on the bus at the time of impact.

Removal of the tree and the damaged bus snarled traffic headed east on Innis Arden Way. While traffic was moving through the scene, drivers from campus were advised to use exit roads other than eastbound Innis Arden Way.

It is recommended that Shoreline students have an educational plan on file. An educational plan is like a roadmap for how to complete the degree requirements found in the program planning guides. In this session, students who intend to complete a transfer degree will learn:

•Where to locate planning guides
•The degree requirements for the program of study
•The importance of taking math and English early
•How previous coursework could be used
•To consider other life commitments like finances, work and family
•Specific course recommendations for four-year colleges
•Why to review a completed educational plan often

If you cannot attend this session, you can also make an appointment with an advisor.
