Perform in a fully-staged and costumed opera and scenes with orchestra. Opera Workshop 2016 has wonderful opportunities for solo and ensemble singing and is open to those with little or a lot of singing experience.
The Opera Workshop Performances will be February 19-21, 2016, with auditions being held Thurs., Nov. 12. For the past forty-six years this workshop has provided training and basic stage and performance experience for aspiring young singers and actors, while giving them the opportunity to earn college credit. To audition for this workshop, click here to request an audition slot.
We are also looking for students who are interested in tech work to assist in the production. Students can get musical theater performance credits, drama credits or stage technical credits. Auditions are open to the community, but everyone involved in the production must register for some type of Shoreline Community College course.

Join us Thurs., Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) for a talk by James Hill, Consul General, Canada. This event is free and open to the public.
The United States and Canada share two borders and their bilateral relationship is one of the closest and most extensive in the world. It is reflected in the high volume of bilateral trade–more than $2 billion a day in goods and service; the fact that the two countries have one of the world’s largest investment relationships; and in people-to-people contact–about 300,000 people cross between the countries every day. In fields ranging from security and law enforcement to environmental protection to free trade, the two countries work closely together on multiple levels, from federal to local.
Canada and the U.S. cooperate on continental defense, transboundary environmental and water issues, and on international high seas governance initiatives. They are both founding members of the Arctic Council. They are both members of numerous multilateral political, military, and economic fora, including the United Nations, NATO, WTO, NAFTA, G7, G20, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Organization of American States, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
But do they see eye to eye on every international issue? There is a tendency of Americans to take Canada for granted – “they are just like us, aren’t they?” While the two nations do share many basic values and cooperate in many spheres, Canada does have interests and perspectives that at times are at odds with the United States.

The Volleyball team travels to nearby rival Edmonds Community College on Tues., Nov. 10 for a 7 p.m. match. The Phins have already secured a share of the North Region title, but a win at Edmonds would give the Region title to the Phins outright. Let’s make the short drive to Seaview Gymnasium to cheer on our first place Phins as they look to end regular season play on the ultimate high.
The game is at the Seaview Gym on the Edmonds Community College campus at 20000 68th Ave. W in Lynnwood. Find directions to campus here.

National Distance Learning Week is an annual effort to generate greater awareness and appreciation for distance learning, sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association. Shoreline Community College is celebrating by posting a daily announcement that highlights an aspect of our eLearning program. Today we celebrate our faculty and their efforts to implement Quality Matters.

Why Faculty Like Quality Matters
Shoreline faculty member Judy Penn is a supporter of Quality Matters (QM) as she is a certified Peer Reviewer and has had her two online courses, Biology 150 and Biology 126, both peer-reviewed and certified with the QM seal.
When asked about her experience with QM, Judy said, “The QM Review process has given me the opportunity to step back and approach my course from a student’s viewpoint. As a result, all of my courses are easier for students to navigate, alignment of outcomes with activities is more obvious, I’ve streamlined my instructions, and a lot of unnecessary ‘clutter’ has been removed.”
Judy asked her students about their experience in her QM Certified courses and they were very positive with feedback such as:
- “I found it extremely easy to find what I needed to do, and to know when the due dates were.”
- “The course was very organized and instructions were easy to follow.”
What Students Want
These comments align with results from the annual Shoreline Online Student Satisfaction Survey. Online students uniformly request online classes that are organized, have a clear layout, and include clear instructions on how students should navigate the course:
- “Right in the beginning of the quarter, it’s nice for the professor to post a section on how they run their class. Each online class is a little different and to help smooth the beginning, a tutorial or page on how to use this course would be effective and useful!”
- “Just like with in-person classes, the teacher can structure classes almost anyway they choose but when that is done in an online class, it is felt way more. One of my online classes was …challenging and engaging and the structure was great and the expectations were clearly defined and understood.
The QM review focuses on the design of courses so students know what the expectations are and where to find course information. QM also emphasizes the alignment between Course Learning Outcomes, Weekly Learning Objectives, and assessments.
Currently, we have 18 courses that have earned the Quality Matters certificationhere at Shoreline and have several more being prepared for review during Winter Quarter.
Shoreline’s eLearning Faculty-in-Residence, Stephanie Diemel, is a certified QM Master Reviewer and has had her online Physics 110 course Quality Matters certified. You can listen to her thoughts about QM by watching a short video here.

A panel of Shoreline student veterans will discuss their experiences with other cultures during their service overseas.

During the break between summer and fall quarters, Shoreline students traveled to South Africa and Bolivia on study abroad programs. On Tuesday, November 10, you will have the chance to meet students who participated in each of these programs and talk with them about their experiences.

Played around the world for fitness and fun, badminton is easy to learn but hard to master. Students will compete to see which team will rule the day and take home the prize.

Teams of four students will participate in a Pub Quiz-style contest, answering questions about geography, world cultures, and world history to see who knows the most about our world and who will take home the prize.

Veterans Day is Wed., Nov. 11. As campus is closed in remembrance on that day, we will be conducting Veterans Day activities on Tues., Nov. 10. The entire campus community is invited to participate in the following Veterans Day events on Tues., Nov. 10 to honor our United States Military Veterans:

Please join us as we gather at the Flag Pole to show our appreciation of United States Military Veterans. Associate Dean of Office of Special Services, Kathy Cook, will say a few words to honor the occasion. Student and Army Veteran, Daniel Siller, and Shoreline student Antoine Germain will perform The Star Spangled Banner.
Student Veteran Panel: 1-2 p.m. in PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208)
Student Veterans discuss their international experiences and how their international service has impacted their choices of major and career and helped them develop cultural competency.
“Restrepo” Film Showing: 2:30 p.m. in Room 1402
Please join us for a showing of the film “Restrepo,” which explores the year that Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington spent in Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair, embedded with the Second Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team of the U.S. Army in the Korangal Valley. The 2nd Patoon is depicted defending the outpost (OP) named after a platoon medic who was killed earlier in the campaign, PFC Juan Sebastian Restrepo, a Colombian-born naturalized citizen.
The film will be followed by a discussion panel.

Women’s Soccer won their quarterfinal match at Lane Community College over the weekend and have qualified for the NWAC Championships! This is the first trip to the final four for Shoreline since the 2008 season. The Phins take on perrennial power Spokane on Saturday, November 14th at 10:30am at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila. We want to give our ladies a home field advantage and Athletic Director Steve Eskridge has called upon the Phin Fam to get “100-200 fans to pack the stands at Starfire.” A win in this match would give the Phins their first ever trip to the NWAC final to be played at 3pm on Sunday, November 15th at Starfire.
Make sure you wear your Phin Game Day shirts to both Edmonds and Starfire. If you don’t have one yet stop by the bookstore and pick up your Green & Gold Game Day t-shirts for $6.75 Let’s make it a sea of Green and Gold at both venues. Ticket prices to the NWAC Championships at Starfire are broken down below:
