Calling all Art Students – or anyone who just loves art! Here are two fun opportunities to volunteer in the arts this summer:
25th Annual Shoreline Arts Festival: Help hundreds of guests celebrate this free show of paintings, ceramics, jewelry, photography, music and dance on June 27 (10 a.m.-6 p.m.) and June 28 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) at Shoreline Center (Northeast 185th Street and First Avenue Northeast). Various shifts available, including children’s activities, and set-up/take-down. Contact: Kelly Lie, 206.417.4645, artsed@shorelinearts.net.
August Arts Camp counselors: Help supervise 3rd-6th graders during a week-long day camp in Shoreline Center, 18560 First Ave. N.E.. Classes in fabric arts; needle-felting; paper lanterns; multi-media; theater arts; vocal music; and poem and yoga dancing will be offered. 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Aug. 3-7. Shoreline Community College will adjust to summer public operating hours starting Monday, June 15 and running through Friday, Sept. 4.
Starting on June 15, the official college hours of business will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, the hours will be 8 a.m. to noon. The campus will close at noon on Fridays for public and student services. On Sept. 7, following the Labor Day holiday, the campus will return to the regular schedule, which is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Friday.
“This adjustment will allow the college to continue to serve our students and communities while also allowing our terrific employees an opportunity to balance their work and their lives outside of the college,” President Cheryl Roberts said.
The Fourth of July-week schedule will require an adjustment. Because the holiday falls on a Saturday,the college will be closed all day on Friday, July 3, to observe the July 4th holiday.
The schedule change won’t impact classes, which are generally not scheduled on Fridays during Summer Quarter. For 2015, Summer Quarter starts June 22 and ends Aug. 13.

Real Orcas need a safe environment.
So do ORCA cards, the regional transit pass now available to students at Shoreline Community College.
The price of the prepaid cards are subsidized through a program funded by a student fee called the Sustainable Commuting Options Fee (SCOF). Program changes made this spring by student government are intended to help make the program easier to use and available to more students.
With freedom, however, comes responsibility.
The new ORCA card program is simple: For $125, a registered student taking two or more credits in a quarter can buy a $200 ORCA ePurse card. Done. The student walks away with an ORCA card that is immediately usable for as long as there is still money on it. The $75 difference is covered by a subsidy funded by the SCOF fee.
An ORCA card is the equivalent of having cash that can be used on all Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro Transit, Kitsap Transit, Pierce Transit, Sound Transit and Washington State Ferries.
And that’s where the responsibility thing comes in.
The very first thing a card buyer should do is go online at www.orcacard.com and register the card. The SCOF fee subsidizes the initial cost, but once it is purchased, the college is out of the picture. The card is a relationship between the ORCA program, which is administered by King County Metro, and the student.
That means losing a card is like losing cash. Registering the card allows the owner to use the ORCA-process to get a replacement card. The college does not do refunds. Students under 19 who register their cards may qualify for the youth rate, making the $200 go a little farther.
Under the new program, SCOF-subsidized ORCA ePurse cards are available for purchase three business days before the start of each quarter. For example, Summer Quarter 2015 starts June 22 so cards will be available for sale starting June 17. Sales of subsidized cards will stop each quarter on the last to drop a class and receive a “W” grade. For summer quarter 2015, that’s July 22. Information about that date for other quarters is available at www.shoreline.edu/calendars.
Regardless of when it is sold, the card and any funds on it don’t expire.
If a student doesn’t use all of the $200 on the card, it is still available to use between quarters, the following quarter … anytime. If a student does use the full value, they may go online to add additional funds. Students may purchase one card per quarter.

With the bleachers and overflow rooms packed, the event was presided over by President Cheryl Roberts, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Bob Francis and Board of Trustees Chair Tom Lux. Joining them on stage were student speaker Abebaw Tekeste and faculty speaker Rachel David.
Honored during the program were Student Service Award recipients Tekeste, Justin Collins, Konstantin, Grinev and Riadiani Marcelita. Professor Emeritus was conferred on Larry Cheng, Gillian Lewis and Sharon Stewart. Emeritus status was also recognized posthumously for Linda Barnes, Erin Walker and Troy Wolff.
Music was provided by the Shoreline Concert Band under the direction of Ken Noreen with graduate Katherine Poor singing the national anthem.

This Fri., June 5 from 1:30-2:30 join us on the ground floor of the FOSS building for a Job Seekers’ Roundtable on transferable skills.
Transferable skills are those you have acquired during any activity in your life — jobs, classes, projects, parenting, hobbies, sports, virtually anything — that are transferable and applicable to what you want to do in your next job. For example, almost every resume I have seen includes the bulleted item “strong communication skills.” But what exactly does that mean? Forms and styles of written communication? Great storyteller? Conveying a positive and likable self-image? All the above?
We often fall into the trap of describing ourselves as a job title, rather than who we really are, and what inspires or motivates us. The fact is, the skills we’ve learned from a lifetime of “you do this, I give you a check,” are just a fraction of everything that makes each one of us unique.
Join us for a discussion about how we might assign our skills to a broader variety of jobs and careers.
