The Community Book Read continues Wed., April 29 with chapters 10-14 of Anne Moody’s novel, Coming of Age in Mississippi. Join the campus community in the PUB room 9202 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. for a conversation about this extraordinary personal memoir of a young black woman growing up in the segregated South and joining the struggle by blacks for voting rights.
Marked for death by the Ku Klux Klan, Anne Moody survived to tell a story that resonates with today’s headlines about racial tensions and the targeting of African Americans by a white society.
**Free copies of Coming of Age in Mississippi are available only for students and classified staff who register to participate in the Community Read.

Open Forum for student elections are Wed., April 29 from 12:30-2 p.m. in the PUB Main Dining Room. Attending the forum is a great way for students to learn about the candidates and about student government in general! Plus there are FREE snacks for anyone who votes! Join us Wed., April 29 in Room 1402 from 3-4:30 p.m. for a Strategic Planning SWOT Session. All members of the Shoreline campus community welcome!
The Strategic Planning Task Force is off to a fast start and moving forward to gather information both externally and internally to the college. As part of the internal process, there will be a series of SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) sessions that will last 90 minutes to receive input from all sectors of the college. All members of the campus community (students, faculty, classified staff and administrative exempt employees) are strongly encouraged to attend one of the sessions listed below. This is your chance to make a difference!
At these meetings, Tom Mesaros from the Alford Group will facilitate the discussion regarding the college’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in both large group and small group formats. The atmosphere will be informal, lively and collaborative.
Here are some sample questions that may be asked:
• What are college’s primary strengths in academics, scheduling, facilities, human resources, decision making, processes, student services, finances, etc.?
• What are college’s primary weaknesses in academics, scheduling, facilities, human resources, decision making, processes, student services, finances, etc.?
• What are the college’s key opportunities in academics, scheduling, facilities human resources, decision making, processes, student services, finances, etc.?
• What are the primary threats to the college?
This is your last chance to participate in this round of meetings, so please come join in: Wednesday, April 29, 3-4:30 p.m., Room 1402.

Come join us Tues., April 28 in the Writing and Learning Studio, room 1501 from 3-3:50 p.m. for this workshop that tackles the topic of finding reputable sources for research and essays.
Evaluating outside sources for an essay or research paper can be vexing! How do you know if a source is reliable? This workshop will teach you how to evaluate sources so you can join any scholarly conversation with confidence!

A little girl buys a plant at the Native Plant Sale.
Thursday’s Earth Week activities were a great success with a talk by Vicki Stiles, Executive Director of the Shoreline Historical Museum, a native plant sale in the PUB courtyard and a film showing of Rio 2.
Earth Week 2015 continues Fri., April 24 with another great lineup of events. Join us for one of the following:
Friday, April 24
“Poisoned Waters” film showing in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) from 12:30-1:20 p.m. “Poisoned Waters” is a Frontline documentary that examines the conditions that lead to water contamination and the danger contamination poses to human health. The program exposes the worsening conditions of Puget Sound and Chesapeake Bay, focusing on the threat of continued runoff from development, agriculture and industry. Q+A session to follow the film will be led by Professor Chip Dodd.
Campus Sustainability Options Workshop in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) from 1:30-2:20 p.m.
This workshop will address what it means to operate sustainably, how our campus could become more sustainable, and what we might do to reach this goal. This workshop will be led by Stian Myraas chair of SCOF (Sustainability and Commuter Options Fee) group.
This event will be followed from 2:20 – 2:30 p.m. by the Art Exhibit Awards. The art that receives the most votes in each category (2D, Sculpture, and Sculptures made during Earth Week) will be awarded a State Parks Pass prize.
Innis Arden/Lower Boeing Creek Nature Walk, 2:30-4:30 p.m. Meet in the PUB parking lot. Join Professor Matt Loper as he continues the exploration of the woods and wetlands that surround our college and follows Boeing Creek as it makes its way to Puget Sound. Learn more about native plant uses as well as the controversies over the control of Boeing Creek’s waters as it flows its last mile to the Sound, nurturing a small run of Chum salmon. We will travel to and from lower Boeing Creek on the campus shuttle.
Saturday, April 25
Upper Boeing Creek Watershed Work Party, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet in front of the gate to the track (East end of campus). Due to an overuse of the area directly behind the track by residents who allow their dogs to run off leash, the restoration work will concentrate on planting natives and moving woody debris next to the new plants to help protect them from being trampled by wayward dogs. Some invasive plant removal may also take place. This activity will be led by Professors Matt Loper and Chip Dodd. Please bring with you a water bottle, thick gloves, work boots, long sleeved shirts and pants, and if you have them shovels, pruners, and hand clippers. Some refreshments will be provided.

Interviewing for work is a tough business. Some of the pitfalls for not winning over the selection panel or HR reps are real, while others may be our imagination getting the best of us. We have to ask good questions based on what we know about the workplace, and meet their questions with concise and thoughtful answers. All the while remembering to curb enthusiasm, anxiety and to never appear too hungry.
Join us this Fri., April 24 in FOSS 5116 from 1-2:30 p.m. for a FREE talk by author, Compassionate Communication Trainer and life coach, Moreah Vestan. Topics covered in this workshop that job seekers can apply to interviewing include:
–How to connect at interviews or when you fill out an application
-How to deal with disappointment and frustration over job hunting
-How to manage difficult interactions with family, friends, at work, etc.
Moreah brings 11 years’ experience in communication training, and has much wisdom to share about maximizing your impact at the interview. There are also tips on choosing how to react, which benefits not only the interview process, but every area of your job search.
