Happy Disability Pride Month from the Accessibility Advisory Committee! July 26, 2022, marks the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), also known as National Disability Independence Day. The disability community celebrates the ADA, a historic piece of legislation, throughout the month of July.

About the Americans with Disabilities Act

The ADA was passed on July 26, 1990, and was broadened with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), which went into effect on January 1, 2009. The ADA has five titles to provide protections for individuals with disabilities. These titles cover the workplace, state and local government entities (such as Shoreline Community College), places of public accommodation, telecommunications, and some miscellaneous circumstances such as protecting people from discrimination if they file a disability-related complaint. The Disability Pride Flag

Did you know that there is a Disability Pride Flag? Check out the image attached to this newsletter! The Disability Pride flag was designed by artist Ann Magill, a disabled woman, utilizing feedback from the disabled community. The flag features a black background with five lines (colored blue, yellow, white, red, and green) slashing across diagonally. According to Stony Brook University’s article on July Is Disability Pride Month, “Each color on this flag represents a different aspect of disability or impairment,” while the black field “is to represent the disabled people who have lost their lives due not only to their illness, but also to negligence, suicide, and eugenics.” As of October 2021, the flag changed to its current design, with parallel lines, rather than its former design, which had lines in the shape of a lightning bolt.

Ways to Celebrate

Disability Pride Month and the ADA Anniversary will be celebrated at a variety of events throughout the region, nation, and virtually. Many in the disability community take to social media in July by adding hashtags such as #ADA32 and #ThanksToTheADA to their postings. Join the virtual celebration by adding these hashtags to your own social media posts! Drop by the Student Accessibility Services office in Room 5226, Mondays-Wednesdays, to pick up some disability-themed stickers for your windows, laptops, or water bottles.

Dear Students, 

Welcome to Summer Quarter at Shoreline Community College! Please review the important information below to help you get started and be successful this quarter. 

Summer Quarter Drop for Non-payment 

A drop for non-payment (dropping classes if you have not made any payments) will take place Wednesday, July 6 for students who owe more than $100, have not made any payments, and do not have a hold to prevent their classes from being dropped.  If you are at risk of your classes being dropped for non-payment, you will receive an email notifying you.  

Please pay your Summer Quarter balance by July 5 to prevent being dropped from your classes. You can pay tuition online through ctcLink, or in person at the Cashier’s Office (FOSS/5000 building). 

If you are unable to see your tuition balance in ctcLink, please follow the steps in this article or join our Zoom support room, which is open M-Th 9-5, F 9-4. 

Summer Quarter Financial Aid 

  • If you have applied for Summer federal/state financial aid or COVID-19 Emergency Grant funding, your classes will not be dropped for non-payment while the Financial Aid Office is determining your financial aid eligibility. 
  • Due to the conversion to ctcLink, financial aid processing and our response time will be delayed. 
  • Disbursement of financial aid funds will begin in mid-July and every week thereafter. 
  • Disbursement of Emergency aid fund will begin on July 5 and every week thereafter.   
  • Beginning Summer Quarter, all financial aid information is viewable in the ctcLink Student Homepage. See how to check your Financial Aid information here.  

Emergency Aid  

Apply for the COVID-19 Emergency fund here. This emergency fund can assist you with tuition, books, fees, and other educational costs. Emergency aid will begin to disburse on July 5.

Waitlists

If you have joined any waitlists for classes, please log into ctcLink to check if you have been enrolled in new courses this week. The waitlists run automatically through Wednesday, June 29, so you may have new classes in your schedule! Any additional balance due for new classes should be paid as soon as possible.

Hi Students,  

To ensure the first few weeks of the quarter go smoothly, check out the important dates listed below. 

  • Jun. 30: Last day to add/drop classes online; last day for 100% refund if you drop; last day to add a new class this quarter 
  • Jul. 1-6: Late enrollment. Petition for Late Enrollment required (late enrollment permitted only in rare and unusual circumstances)  
  • Jul. 4: Campus closed – Holiday 
  • Jul. 7: $15 add/drop fee begins and “W” begins if you drop 
  • Jul. 13: Graduation application deadline  
  • Jul. 14: Last day to receive a 50% refund for dropped classes 
  • Jul 28: Last day to withdraw from classes

TidyUP makes it easy to identify unpublished pages, delete outdated content and remove empty folders in Canvas. Have you ever tried to manually find and delete unused files or unpublished pages in Canvas?  It’s not easy. Specifically, TidyUP allows you to do the following in any Canvas course:
  • Identify and delete all files that are not being used in your course.
  • See what files are being used in your course and where they are being used.
  • Find empty folders in the files section of your course and delete them.
  • View a list of all your Canvas pages, assignments, quizzes or discussions with information about each page and the ability to delete multiple pages at once

Faculty, Staff, and Students are invited to join together to celebrate Pride. We will not be marching this year but there will be an opportunity for SCC folks to meet up at Pride. We will have a blanket out and some games for anyone that wants to drop in while they are at Pride.
