The staff of Spindrift, the annual art and literary journal of Shoreline Community College, is pleased to announce the publication of Spindrift 2020. This issue, its 54th, is a carefully curated selection of fine art, photography, poetry, short stories, essays, music, videos, and more, by contributors from all over the world. New in this year’s issue are audio recordings of a selection of literary pieces, accessible by QR code.

Normally published in May each year, Spindrift 2020 encountered significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For months it was unclear when, how, or even if the journal would be published. In a fortunate turn of events, this year’s issue was finally brought into print; many collegiate journals have not been so lucky. Our experience was distilled into the art and design of the cover, a subtle reference to the present and foreseeable future of invisible challenges and self-quarantines.

In the past, distribution channels were limited. Now, for the first time ever, Spindrift is available through a local bookstore and online (details below), so our art and literature doesn’t have to know the boundaries that we do.

Students: Do you want to get paid to write?

The Ebbtide is Shoreline Community College’s premier news outlet, delivering award-winning independent student journalism since 1965. Student fees fund the work and students run The Ebbtide.

Each quarter The Ebbtide typically has 5-8 paid student positions on staff, along with several unpaid staff writers in the Student Newspaper class and occasional contributors from the general student body. In addition to boosting your communication skills, getting paid, and having fun, working for a student newspaper is a desirable addition to a resume or university application.

The Ebbtide has continued to publish during the pandemic, through its online site theebbtide.com, but we have adjusted the duties and titles of some of the paid positions because of the temporary suspension of print editions. We are in an ongoing process of making improvements to the website, and looking for an online editor (details below).

If you’re interested in paid staff positions, or you would just like to learn about journalism and write stories for The Ebbtide, you should:

Enroll in the Student Newspaper class (CMST 245) for at least one credit.

Have staff meeting time available. There are no traditional classes, but you will attend weekly Zoom staff meetings on Mondays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Expect to spend additional time each week on reporting and writing, and communicating with editors during production (usually every other Thursday afternoon). Paid time allowed: Up to 16 hours a week, as arranged with the Editor.

If you aren’t sure about enrolling and want to explore the possibilities, you’re welcome to attend a Zoom staff meeting.

The first meeting of the quarter is this Monday (Sept. 28) at 2:30 p.m.. Email the advisor, Vanessa McVay at vmcvay@shoreline.edu to get a zoom invitation & link, or if you have questions.

Paid jobs in 2020-2021

News Editor (open)

Are you a news junkie? Along with compiling bi-weekly news briefs, the News Editor covers ASG meetings; SCC-based news relating to topics such as administration and curriculum; and any other major developments concerning the college. The News Editor’s reporting may take an investigative turn, depending on the subject and story.

General Assignment Editor (open)

The General Assignment Editor position is new and designed to handle duties and stories in coordination with the News Editor (such as coverage of SCC’s budget, business and finance developments and campus crime and security issues). The News editor job is the first priority for hiring.

These jobs are filled on a quarterly basis, so if you can’t work Fall, check back before the quarter ends to see what might be open in Spring. Students who have taken CMST 245 at least one quarter and have experience in an unpaid staff position have a better chance at paid jobs.

Students can contact the Editor-in-Chief for more information about these paid positions at ebbtide.editor@gmail.com. Faculty can contact the advisor, Vanessa McVay at vmcvay@shoreline.edu.

Dear Student,

As we begin fall quarter, I felt it important to pause and remember the life of United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This weekend, I know I have been thinking of the body of her work. She said, “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” Her work focused on ensuring women and men had equal citizenship as fundamental constitutional rights. We are better as a society because of her work.

As our country grapples with how to address longstanding racial injustice, her life provides an amazing model of how to live with sharp reason, care, and empathy. She was a woman of extreme intelligence, who inspired those around her to live more fully into their humanity. She was a gracious person to those who doubted her abilities because her character and values were unwavering.

Justice Ginsburg said, “[I would like to be remembered as] someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability. And to help repair tears in her society, to make things a little better through the use of whatever ability she has.”

Thank you, Justice Ginsburg, for a life lived doing your very best for our nation.

Dear Student,

Although many years have passed since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we can never forget that tragic day and its aftermath. Please join me in taking a moment to pause and remember those whose lives were lost, as well as the many families who grieve today.

Respectfully,

Dear Student,

On July 28, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced updates to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. We are troubled to learn DHS will:

  • Reject all initial DACA and Employment Authorization applications.
  • Reject new and pending requests for advanced parole that do not have exceptional circumstances.
  • Decrease the period of renewed deferred action from two years to one year.

This is confusing and discouraging news right before the start of the school year, especially for our mixed-status and immigrant families here at Shoreline. I have been vocal previously about my support for efforts to protect our HB 1079 and undocumented students, and my resolve in this area remains steadfast.

Any student concerned about their situation is encouraged to seek legal counsel with an attorney experienced in immigration related matters and concerns. I want to also encourage students who have DACA to remain hopeful and consider putting their energy toward advocacy and action through local organizations.

These are complicated and emotionally taxing issues, so please also consider using the following resources if you or someone you know is experiencing distress:

  • Dr. Marisa Herrera can provide referrals to community resources that support the undocumented community with free or significantly reduced-cost services (mherrera@shoreline.edu).
  • If you are struggling with this news, please know the Counseling Center is available to support you (206-546-4594).

Thank you for your continued care and compassion for each other during these troubling times.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Dear Student,

Governor Jay Inslee and Secretary of Health John Wiesman announced changes late last week to Washington’s phased approach to reopening. The changes target activities that data have shown provide a higher risk of COVID-19 exposure.

In addition, Secretary Wiesman announced an expansion of his face coverings order, effective Saturday, July 25. The expansion will require face coverings in all common spaces, such as elevators, hallways, shared spaces, and college housing.

As a reminder, the College will continue remote operations and remote instruction through fall quarter. However, some employees and some professional-technical programs will continue to be pre-authorized to participate in limited on-campus learning.

Please remember that if you are authorized to come to Shoreline’s campus for work or instruction, you will need to wear a mask in all common spaces to comply with the Governor’s order, as well as complete the Campus Access Form and follow all other health protocols appropriate to your level of authorization to be on campus.

Thank you for shifting your behavior to help all of us stay safe!

Gratefully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Dear Student,

Since sharing my July 10th message about new federal plans to prevent international students taking online courses from remaining in the United States, the College has been in communication with elected officials, professional organizations, and other colleges and universities to advocate on behalf of our students.

Thankfully today, the Administration rescinded this rule, after facing lawsuits and criticism from a host of states, universities, and organizations.

Thanks to the support of Vice President Phillip King, Executive Director of International Education Samira Pardanani, and the entire International Education department earlier this week, the College provided information to Washington’s Attorney General Bob Ferguson, in preparation for his filing of a temporary restraining order to stop the rule change. I also signed on to the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration Amicus Brief in support of rescinding the rule change.

While this cruel rule change should have never been considered, I am so thankful to every voice raised in opposition and every action taken so quickly to dismantle this policy.

Shoreline Community College will always be a place that stands for inclusion and student supportThroughout this stressful time, our International Education department has continued to communicate with our international students to make sure they are receiving appropriate care and resources, and to make sure they know they are always welcome here at Shoreline.

In support,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President
