Dear Student,
In the interest of keeping you updated about the precautions the College is taking in response to a potential threat against an individual, here is the latest information. The situation continues to be investigated by the authorities and out of an abundance of caution, we have arranged for a police presence to remain on our campus through Wednesday, December 11.
There is no specific action for you to take at this time. Our Safety & Security officers, Care Team, and Executive Team are working tirelessly to monitor and address this situation, and the additional support from local law enforcement is a proactive way for us to enrich the campus security measures that are already in place. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Dear Student,
You may have received Rave Alert text or email messages this week regarding notice of an increased security and police presence on campus. I recognize this information may have been anxiety-provoking or confusing, so here is some additional information I can share at this time.
The timely notice was provided soon after the College received a report of a potential threat against an individual on campus. Specific details about the situation are not able to be shared publicly, but the College is taking this report seriously, out of an abundance of caution.
In compliance with the federal Clery Act, timely warning notices are intended to alert you to a potential situation and remind you about standard safety precautions, such as being aware of your surroundings and reporting any concerning activity. There was no specific action for you to take. (If there had been a need for you to take a specific action, such as avoiding campus or sheltering in place, you would have been directed to do so via text, email, phone, website, and social media.)
While the current investigation continues, the campus remains open with a heightened level of security. Here are some of the steps we’ve taken to ensure campus safety:
- Requested assistance from local law enforcement agencies to regularly patrol campus through the end of the quarter (if needed)
- Stationed additional security personnel around campus
- Reached out to select employees who may be able to provide specific assistance to this situation
- Safety & Security, the Care Team, and the Executive Team are in regular contact to review and respond to any developments
- Members of the Care Team are providing support to the individual who was threatened
Any further developments will be shared with you as they become available. In the meantime, if you are feeling distressed or in need of compassionate support, particularly at this critical time of the quarter, students are encouraged to reach out to the Counseling Center (206-546-4594, FOSS Building 5000) and employees are invited to access services through the Employee Assistance Program (877-313-4455).
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you to be sure you are signed up to receive emergency alerts from the College. Please visit www.shoreline.edu/connect to check if your communication preferences are up to date in our database.
Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Dear Student,
Many of us are aware of an impending US Supreme Court decision on the future of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). I know many students and employees may be feeling a tremendous amount of uncertainty and anxiety about what this decision may mean for undocumented and immigrant students.
I want to reiterate Shoreline Community College’s steadfast support for all students. We are committed to upholding and maintaining a welcoming and supportive learning environment for everyone, regardless of documentation status.
While the current Supreme Court case is being heard, College employees are staying informed of any potential changes. Recently, staff members from Students, Equity & Success participated in a “DACA and Your Future” webinar to help prepare for possible outcomes. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide both students and employees with support resources as well as notification should any new developments arise.
Resources and support are available on our Campus Immigration Resources and HB 1079 web pages.
I want you to know we stand by DACA recipients and remain committed to keeping our doors wide open to them, because we know that our quality of life in Washington improves when everyone has access to education.
Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Dear Student,
On Friday, October 18, a student discovered a racially offensive sticker on the Career Education Options (CEO) job bulletin board in the Workforce office that referred to diversity and white genocide. The sticker was reported to CEO staff, immediately taken down, and given to Safety & Security for investigative purposes.
As our Community Standard Statement declares, we do not tolerate hateful, violent, or discriminatory actions that target any person or group based on their beliefs, customs, identity, of affiliations. While our College respects and protects freedom of speech, we also affirm the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and are steadfastly committed to providing a welcoming and secure environment for all members of our community.
We ask for your assistance in helping us to identify if any other materials of this nature are found anywhere on campus. Shoreline maintains an active Bias Response Team dedicated to reviewing and responding to incidents like this. Please report any and all bias incidents using our bias incident reporting form.
Offensive materials such as this sticker can bring up many feelings for people. If you are in need of support, please know we offer resources to students through the Counseling Center (FOSS Building 5000, Room 5251).
Shoreline is unwavering in its resolve to create an inclusive, diverse and welcoming community, and incidents such as this will not deter us from this important work. We can and will work together to find the best in each other, to bridge our differences, and to treat each other with the respect and kindness that all people deserve.
Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Congratulations to Jennifer Brown, a Shoreline student currently studying abroad in Japan thanks to a $2000 Gilman scholarship award.
Studying abroad helps students broaden their worldview and allows them to experience different cultures, discover a different style of education, hone language skills, discover new career tracks, find new areas of interest, and gain life experience and opportunities for personal growth. Many students don’t take advantage of study abroad opportunities because they aren’t aware of the many scholarships available to help defray the costs.
Check out the Gilman scholarship, as well as the numerous other scholarships available to students to study abroad.
And check out the many fabulous 2020 Study Abroad opportunities posted on Shoreline’s Study Abroad page.
