Dear Student,

I wanted to update you on some of the roadway changes happening on and around campus. As these improvements continue in the coming months, additional traffic diversion, flaggers, and other safety measures will be in place. We understand that this may pose an inconvenience for some, but please know that safety is our top priority for all involved.

  1. Right-of-Way Improvements:

The City of Shoreline and the College are working together to improve access to the College for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. This work has begun along NW Innis Arden Way.

What Will Change?

  • New sidewalks will be constructed along NW Innis Arden Way, Greenwood Avenue N, and N 160th Street
  • Bicycle markings will be installed on N 160th Street between Greenwood Avenue N and Dayton Avenue N.

What’s the Timeline?

  • Completion by late fall 2019
  1. Storm Water Improvements:

Currently, repair work is also occurring on the storm line of NW Innis Arden Way directly West of Greenwood Ave and 160th Street, which unfortunately impacts local traffic.

What Will Change?

  • The roadway is reduced to one lane of alternative traffic between 6:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. each weekday to repair a storm line

What’s the Timeline?

  • Now through late June (approximately 6 weeks)

Can I Avoid this Construction Traffic?

  • During this work, you may want to use one of two alternate routes from campus:
  • West Gate Exit: Take a right on NW Innis Arden Way, then take another right turn onto 10th Ave NW, and another right turn onto 175th.
  • East Gate Exit: Left turn on Greenwood Avenue, then another right turn on Carlyle Hall Road NW, and another right turn to Dayton Avenue.
  1. Long-Term Intersection Improvements:

Looking ahead, the College and City are developing a plan for the intersection of Greenwood Avenue N with N 160th Street/ NW Innis Arden Way, as the existing intersection was not built for the large number of people that use it on a regular basis.

What Will Change?

  • This intersection will be rebuilt to improve traffic flow

What’s the Timeline?

  • By the fall 2025 (six years from the opening of the new student housing)

How Can I Learn More?

  • You are invited to attend a public meeting to learn more about these improvements on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 (6 – 8 p.m.) in the Main Dining Room (Room 9208)

Thank you for your patience as we make these positive improvements for our campus community and our neighbors!

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Thank you to all who participated in the Ecological Integrity Survey during winter quarter. The results show strong interest among our campus community in sustainability-related curriculum, an expanded composting program, and more sustainable dining options. Below is a list of the key results. For a full summary of survey results, please download and review the Ecological Integrity Employee Survey the Ecological Integrity Student Survey and the combined staff, faculty, and student powerpoint.

• About 600 students (about 10%) and 300 employees (about 40%) responded to the survey.
• Most students (about 80%) did not think they had taken a course or participated in activities related to sustainability, but almost 80% were interested.
• Most students (over 62%) and employees (over 75%) agreed about the importance of curriculum related to sustainability.
• Students and employees shared interest in climate change.
• Students also showed interest in the relationship between power, privilege, economics and the environment (note: that’s the 3 E’s!).
• Students showed interest in our campus as a living laboratory for learning, with highest interest in food and dining, waste, air & climate, energy, and transportation.
• Employees showed interest in learning about recycling/composting, climate change, and the natural world/conservation.
• Faculty showed interest in using campus as a living laboratory to explore topics like waste, transportation, public engagement, air & climate, energy, and food & dining.
• While only 5-8% of students plan a major or career related to sustainability, a strong majority felt it was an important topic of study.
• Over 40% of students and 50% of employees put food waste in garbage with over 80% of both groups saying that they would compost more if there were more bins.
• Most students and employees were willing to pay more for sustainable dining options including locally-produced food and compostable cutlery.
• About 80% of employees and about 45% of students reported they drive alone to the college. Improved bus access to campus, bus subsidies, and assistance coordinating carpools were listed as the most effective incentives toward alternative forms of transportation.

All results from the Ecological Integrity Survey will be used to inform priorities for recommendations to the Executive Team.

Dear Student,

On Sunday, April 21, multiple churches and hotels were bombed in Sri Lanka, claiming the lives of hundreds of innocent people and wounding many more. I want to acknowledge that members of our Shoreline community have been touched by this senseless act of violence. As a College, we send our deepest condolences to the victims and their families, and stand in solidarity with all those affected.

This terrible tragedy may affect each of us differently so it’s important to know there are support services available to assist you:

  • Counseling services are available for all students in the Counseling Center, located in Building 5000 (FOSS). During regular hours, contact 206-546-4594. After hours, a 24-hour Crisis Line is available to students at 866-427-4747.
  • Counseling services are also available to Shoreline employees via the Employee Assistance Program at 877-313-4455.

In addition, the situation in Sri Lanka continues to be very unstable. Reports of more explosive devices being discovered continue to come in and people are living in a state of constant fear. Although the pain of this senseless act will linger, there are steps we can take to let those affected by this tragedy know there is more goodness and love out there than hate.

A member of our campus community has invited all who are interested to attend a vigil and blessings ceremony in Tukwila to honor those who have died and to impart blessings for the injured who are in recovery. Here are the details:

Vigil and Memorial Service for Victims in Sri Lanka
Friday, April 26, 7:00 p.m.

Sarana International Buddhist Center
15241 51st Ave S, Tukwila, WA 98188

White is the color of mourning; light refreshments will be served

In support,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

All campus members are invited to join us on Tuesday, April 16th from 9:30-2 pm. From 9:30-12:30, there will be speakers and activities in the Courtyard or the PUB Main Dining (weather dependent). From 12:30-2 pm, there will be a march to Aurora. (See flyer for details.)

This Walkout/Teach-in is about advocating for our entire community: students, faculty, and staff. It’s about sending a message to Olympia that they MUST value the important role higher education plays in the lives of Washington citizens. It’s also about helping our students understand the state of higher education and how underfunding impacts them.
