Students from the vibrant drama program at Shoreline Community College put their ideas and talents on stage. From a foundation in the literature, theories and history of theater and film, this program is training the next generation of artists in theatrical productions and digital filmmaking with skills in the technical and creative aspects of theater and video production. The 26th annual Shoreline Arts Festival is Sat., June 25 & Sun., June 26, and is a free, two-day festival featuring music, dance, theater, art exhibitions, hands-on art activities, cultural rooms, food, and more that is organized by the Shoreline – Lake Forest Park Arts Council. A fun time for all, here’s how you can participate:
Show your art!
Submit your art to be showcased in the Arts Festival Juried 2D/3D Art & Juried Photography show. But hurry – the deadline for registration is June 19!
Volunteer!
The Arts Council is still looking for volunteers to help before, after, and at the festival. Join the veritable army of volunteers who make this celebration of the arts possible and get a glimpse “backstage” as we entertain 10,000+ art-loving community members over two days.
Volunteers are needed for a wide range of tasks, with shifts ranging from two hours to all-day, so there’s something for every skill level and any amount of availability. Sign up now on VolunteerSpot.
Attend and enjoy the fun!
Check out the artist marketplace, dance and musical performances, food trucks galore, a performance by Missoula Children’s Theater, cultural rooms, arts and crafts stations, and more!
And, you can even avoid the stress of parking by taking the Free Arts Festival Shuttle (provided by Shoreline Community College!). The shuttle will run in a loop stopping at Meridian Park, Cromwell Park, and the Shoreline Center every 15 minutes during festival hours (Saturday, June 25 10am-6pm and Sunday, June 26 10am-5pm).

Please welcome Ángel de Jesus González as the new Assistant Director of the Student Leadership Center. Ángel’s first day in his new position was Mon., June 6.
Originally from Southern California, Ángel completed his undergraduate career at Whittier College double majoring in Environmental Science and Spanish. It is at Whittier College where Ángel discovered his vocation of working with students and decided to pursue a Master of Arts in Post-secondary Educational Leadership with a Specialization in Student Affairs at San Diego State University.
Ángel has worked as a Study Abroad Advisor, Graduate Assistant at Whittier College, and most recently served as a Resident Director at Pacific Lutheran University. He is extremely excited to join the Shoreline community and foster a space that will help him and his students grow. He looks forward to supporting his students and advocating for equity and social justice. In his downtime, Ángel likes to explore, travel, dance and eat with his partner. He looks forward to challenging and supporting his students as they find their passion and purpose.

A genial and lighthearted affair, in which a New York-based Jewish-Argentinian man returns to the Once district of Buenos Aires for Purim, reconnecting with his father, his faith, his native community, and his heart.

In a new chapter of the beloved saga of Belle & Sebastian (SIFF 2014), the now-10-year-old hero and his brave, shaggy dog embark on an exciting adventure to rescue Sebastian’s mom, who is lost after her plane crashes deep in the forest. Campus services are closed in observance of the Memorial Day holiday, but the Theater is open for SIFF showings.
Veterans’ day at SIFF:
40 free tickets are available for veterans to use on Mon., May 30 to any of four films showing on Shoreline’s campus on Mon., May 30 – Memorial Day.
These tickets are offered first come, first served – tickets must be picked up by noon on May 27 in the Foundation office or by seeing Mary Brueggeman on May 30 in the Main theater lobby. Please have military ID to show when picking up tickets. These free tickets for veterans are made available courtesy of Chuck Olson Chevrolet-Kia and Girandola Tools for Entrepreneurs.

Margin to Center: Octavia’s Brood Sci-Fi Writing Workshops, PUB 9208
Thurs., May 19: 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Collective Sci-Fi Writing Workshop: Walidah Imarisha, adrienne maree brown, and Gabriel Teodros will lead participants through a collective story-telling/writing workshop where you create collective and individual stories based on current political issues.
Sci-Fi & Direct Action Training: Participants will use familiar stories of other worlds (such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Oz, Harry Potter, etc.) to design direct action campaigns that parallels the world we are fighting for in the here and now. By the end of the session, regimes will be toppled, evil forces vanquished and solid skills in direct action organizing developed.

Roger Fernandes is a member of the Lower Elwha Band of the S’Klallam Indians from the Port Angeles, Washington, area. Roger has been storytelling for about seven or eight years. The stories he started with were simple legends. Over the years, he has moved into telling myths, creation stories, flood stories, and hero stories. In sharing these types of stories Native people can teach non-Natives about the aspects of their culture that go beyond food, shelter, and clothing. These stories actually define the culture of the tellers.

The Maiden of Deception Pass: Guardian of Her Samish People, PUB 9208

Long ago a maiden named Ko-kwahl-alwoot risked her life to save the Samish people from starvation. She did so by agreeing to marry a man of the sea, who threatened to take the plentiful sea life away from the area if she did not. Her reluctant father demanded that Ko-kwahl-alwoot return annually. But, after about four years of visits, it became increasingly difficult for her to return to the village. And so, today, Ko-kwahl-alwoot lives eternally underwater. The documentary tells her story and how tribal history inspires generations of Samish people.
We Are Our Stories: A Theater of the Oppressed Workshop, PUB 9208

In this workshop, Dr. Elena Esquibel and Dr. Ernest Johnson will facilitate student exploration of inequality through Boalian Theater of the Oppressed performance techniques.
