Shoreline will host a flu immunization clinic from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Room 9202 PUB. Immunizations will be available by the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association for students, faculty, and staff.

The association can bill most major health insurance plans – Regence, Premera, Group Health, United Healthcare, Molina, Community Health plan, Coordinated Care, and Aetna – for the flu immunizations. They do not bill Cigna, Kaiser, or TriCare. In order to process the billing, those receiving a flu shot must complete a patient consent form, which includes name, address, date of birth, and individual insurance subscriber number.

For those without insurance, the shots are $28, which can be paid in cash or check. Credit or debit cards are not accepted.

More information about vaccinations is available on this flyer and at www.cdc.gov/flu.

According to health officials, in addition to vaccination, personal preventative measures are among the most effective in preventing getting and spreading diseases such as the flu. Recommendations include:

  • Practice good hygiene
    • Wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand cleaners. When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or use your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Know the signs and symptoms
    • Look for signs of fever, such as feeling very warm, a flushed appearance, and sweating or shivering. A fever is a temperature taken with a thermometer that is equal to or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius.

Ongoing efforts by the college to promote flu awareness and health include:

  • Posting informational posters about hand-washing and germ-containment practices in all restrooms
  • Keeping restrooms well-stocked with soap and paper towels
  • Using good custodial practices, including:
    • Complete restroom cleaning
    • Disinfectant wipe-downs of door handles
    • Spray disinfectant for commonly touched surfaces

The college website has additional information about measures in place regarding infectious diseases.

This Thursday’s Job Seekers’ Roundtable: Four Factors of Entrepreneurial Goal Setting, with Tiffany McVeety

It’s never too late to start a business. In fact, according to a 2014 Kauffman Foundation study, plus 50 workers have launched their own businesses at a higher rate than 20-34 year-olds every year since 1996. And “[b]usiness owners ages 55-64 represented more than 23% of new entrepreneurs” in 2012. As more boomers retire, this number is predicted to grow.

We’re changing the ways we think about work, careers and starting businesses.

Tiffany will explain the nuts and bolts of getting a Four Point Plan together, and how you can put your interests and hobbies to work for you. As always, tasty refreshments and our Conversation Starter blend of coffee will be served. Hope to see you there!

When:
Thursday, August 11
1-2:30 p.m.

Where:
Shoreline Community College
Building 9000, Room 9202

Terra Staffing employment specialist and recruiter, Sarah Hoffman will join the conversation at Shoreline Community College’s Job Seekers’ Roundtable this Thurs., Aug. 4 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the PUB 9202. Sarah will impart details about Terra, what you might expect during a placement interview, and who’s hiring. Word is that office staffing companies are at the very least even with requests for workers and numbers of workers to be hired. So it’s a strong possibility that if you need something fast in the temp or temp-to-perm sphere, Terra could be your last stop.

Please bring your resume – and that cover letter we polished up last week to the PUB 9202 from 1-2:30 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to get placed! As always, coffee and light refreshments are on hand, compliments of Central Market.

P.S. – August is a strong month for Roundtable. Here’s what’s coming up:

• 8/11: Tiffany McVeety: “4 Factors of Entrepreneurial Goal Setting?”
• 8/18: Annie Conklin: “How My Home-Based Business Took Off”
• 8/25: Tiffany Lamoreaux: “Applying for Jobs in the 21st Century”
