Job Seekers’ Roundtable, Fri., March 11: Get Placed through Accountemps!

Join us this Fri., March 11 for a Job Seekers’ Roundtable designed to get you placed through Accountemps! We’re in the Workforce Education Office (room 5116 in the bottom floor of FOSS, 5000 bldg.) from 1-2:30 p.m.

Are you ready to get a paycheck? Is it a temporary job you have in mind – that is, just something to make do until the dream job arrives — or is it something more permanent in an office setting? Either way, if you stop by Roundtable this Friday, your chances of becoming employed very soon will increase dramatically. Below is an excerpt from a very nice card I once received from Roundtable participant, Kathy Tiedman:

“My contact with your speaker from Accountemps facilitated contact with a recruiter at Robert Half and ultimately led to my placement in a long term, temporary position.”

Kathy went on to say that the experience boosted her confidence and has added some attractive cache to her resume. And wouldn’t you know it, Elizabeth Goodnow from Accountemps/Robert Half Agency is our featured guest for this Friday! Please come by, bring your resume and business card, and arrange for a one-on-one with Elizabeth. She and the folks at Accountemps have been awesome over the past couple years and have landed many Roundtablers much needed employment.

New Molly Magai exhibit in the Art Gallery! Now through April 15

Check out the new exhibit in the Admin building (1000 bldg.) art gallery by Molly Magai – open now through April 15, with an artist’s reception on Thurs., April 14, 4-6 p.m.

Molly Magai Artist Statement
I make paintings of landscapes dominated by cities, roads, industry, and the living things that inhabit them. These structures, created for human convenience, are very much in conflict with nature. They are also an awe-inspiring human accomplishment, the work of generations of builders and engineers. Most of us ignore these landscapes as we pass by them. My job as a genre painter is to make you see them, in their destructiveness and their beauty.

I make paintings based on snapshots I take from a moving vehicle. Handicapped by the car’s speed, the camera creates inadvertent effects – unexpected colors, halos, and blurs. I’m interested in the sensation of speed, and the way the image is filtered first through the camera, the painter, and the painting.

Students tackle issues with public demonstrations, Thurs., March 10

On Thurs., March 10, students from the Communications Studies program will hold public demonstrations in the PUB in an effort to bring critical awareness to social justice issues. Students from CMST 101 and 203 (Intro. to Communications and Communication for Social Change) will present public demonstration performances on Homelessness, the Election, and Gender Neutral Restrooms. Please tell your students about these demonstrations, and take a few moments yourself to observe these performances in the PUB main areas.

9:30 a.m. “Homeless in Seattle” 
Students will create a performative public demonstration on homelessness in Seattle. In this performance, students will challenge some of the dominant stereotypes about homelessness in Seattle and across the nation. We will also be gathering donations for the ROOTS Young Adult Shelter.

10:30 a.m. “What the heck’s a delegate? And the Election beyond”
In this performance, students have divided into four groups (Trump Fanatics, Hill’s Women, Bern Hipsters, and Electoral College news reporters). Through humor and satire, each group will criticize the election spectacle and point out our lack of knowledge in the mysterious election process.

12:30 p.m. “The Gender Neutral Bathroom Museum”
In this public demonstration, students will take over the men’s restroom on the second floor of the PUB and turn it into a bathroom museum. Museum tours are curated and attendees will learn about the history of bathrooms, stereotypical fears about gender neutral bathrooms and information that dispels these fears, options for more inclusive bathrooms, and exit interviews with attendees. Recruiters with tickets will be in the PUB.

That’s right, BREATHE is now a whole week, with the majority of activities occurring on Thurs., March 10!

Encourage students to take a break and participate in any of the BREATHE activities offered March 4-11.  We have a passport system – so pick up a passport at any activity, attend at least four activities and receive a prize at Counseling Services.

…and guess what – Shoreline employees are encouraged to participate – so make sure you BREATHE too!

Campus events for March 9: Zika workshop, Community Read, and more!

Zika Virus:  Science and Pregnancy, Nursing Bldg., Room 2308
Wed., March 9: 11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.

The World Health Organization declared a “public health emergency of international concern” on February 1 over the Zika virus and the health problems that doctors fear it is causing. Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. Of particular concern are reports of pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes as a result of contracting the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued travel notices for people traveling to regions and certain countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

• What is Zika virus and what do we know about it?
• Is there a vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat Zika?
• Why is contracting the Zika virus dangerous for pregnant women?
• Will a woman’s future pregnancies be at risk?
• Do we in the Pacific Northwest need to worry about Zika virus?

Join us for a discussion of the Zika virus, and its possible side effects, especially for pregnant women, with:

Each year a new book is selected for our Community Book Read. Together we share our impressions and ideas. Weekly analyses of the text are led by a variety of college volunteers, bringing with them their unique backgrounds, expertise and perspectives. This keeps the discussion fresh, lively and relevant.

This year’s book is Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. Octavia’s Brood is a collection of social justice-themed science fiction stories that feature things like time travel, shape shifting, dystopian worlds, re-imaginings of “model minorities” and the possibilities of using visionary fiction to develop new ideas of future worlds. The works are inspired by the writings of Octavia Butler, an award-winning science fiction writer (Kindred, Parable of the Sower, and Lilith’s Brood) who lived in Lake Forest Park before her death in 2006.

Last chance to see “Live! From the Last Night of My Life” March 10-12

Shoreline Community College’s Theater Department is proud to present Seattle-based Wayne Rawley’s “Live! From the Last Night of My Life” in the main campus theater March 3-12.

About the show: Doug Sample is a man who has decided his experiment with life has, for all intents and purposes, failed. He has achieved nothing, accomplished nothing, and has nothing except his graveyard shift at a local gas station and Mini-Mart. He has decided that the best thing for everyone would be if he shot himself in the head, and he is planning to do it right in front of the Mini-Mart’s security cameras at the end of this, his last shift. But before the night is over, Doug will be visited by his past, his present, his possible futures and some particularly annoying customers as he struggles with some of life’s most challenging questions like, “Why should I go on?”, “What does it all mean?”, and perhaps most importantly, “Did I remember to change the cherry syrup in the Slushie Machine?”

Matika Wilbur is one of the Pacific Northwest’s leading photographers.She has exhibited her work extensively in regional, national, and international venues. Wilbur is of Swinomish and Tulalip descent and is a certified teacher at Tulalip Heritage High School where she serves the youth of her own indigenous community.

Wilbur will share her current work, titled Project 562, which is a national documentary project dedicated to gathering oral narratives from all Tribal communities throughout the U.S. and photographing contemporary Native America.

Battle Royale 2016: An exciting free game event for all Shoreline Students (with cool prizes)!

Shoreline Community College’s Adventure Builders Club presents an exciting and fulfilling game for all Shoreline students to participate in this spring quarter – Battle Royale!

Battle Royale is a campus-wide event that takes place during one whole week – April 25-29, 2016. The objective of the game is simple: Eliminate as many targets as you can in that span of time. This week-long game will definitely keep your adrenaline pumping while being on the lookout for whoever’s after you! Don’t worry about class disruptions or not having time to relax, because our rules include off-limit locations and red zones, where you can take breaks. Based on our previous experience in handling this event, a fun time is guaranteed for our participants!

Some awesome prizes will also be given to the highest-scoring players. We have prepared a prize pool up to $150! Registration is FREE and is open from February 29 until April 20. Register here and check out our Facebook page for more information.
