Spring 2015 Community Read FlierJoin the college community in conversation about Coming of Age in Mississippi, an extraordinary personal memoir of a young black woman growing up in the segregated South and joining the struggle by blacks for voting rights.

This Wednesday’s meeting will cover chapters 23-26 and will take place in the PUB room 9202 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Marked for death by the Ku Klux Klan, Anne Moody survived to tell a story that resonates with today’s headlines about racial tensions and the targeting of African Americans by a white society.

**Free copies of Coming of Age in Mississippi are available only for students and classified staff who register to participate in the Community Read.

Join the Athletic Department on May 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the PUB for our annual celebration recognizing our student-athletes with athletic and academic awards from the Northwest Athletic Conference and other special team awards.

Entertainment at the dress-up affair will include live music, motivational speaker Mark Matteson, a silent auction, a southern-style dinner and dancing.

Tickets are:
$12 for seniors, students and children
$15 for general-public adults

Tickets may be purchased by check or credit card in the Athletic Office of Shoreline Community College. For more information on purchasing tickets, please contact Program Coordinator Kathy Langer at 206-546-4746 or Athletic Director Steve Eskridge at 206-546-4553.

The banquet was started in 1998 and ran consecutively through 2006 before going on hiatus. Last year, we were glad to bring it back to celebrate our Shoreline student-athletes!

In addition to the banquet, which starts at 7:30 p.m., there will be a silent auction to raise funds for our Athletic Department starting at 6:30 p.m. A dance will immediately follow the dinner and award ceremony.

Seating is limited, so please get your tickets right away. We hope to see you there!

Monday’s Multicultural Week events were awesome, with an opening reception for the photo exhibit “Deface Me,” the Deep Roots Garden plant sale, a talk on “Isms” and more. The fun continues at Shoreline with some awesome events for Tues., May 19. Here are the don’t miss items on Tuesday’s agenda.

Hear about the Student of Color Conference Experience and find out what makes this the best conference for Community and Technical colleges in the nation. Find out what you need to know in order to attend next year!

Topics covered include: Impact of PTSD on Veteran population, Veteran Employment and Wages, Veterans and Problem-solving and the Homeless Veteran Epidemic.

Help support SCC students who truly cannot otherwise afford or access a meal. We are accepting donations of non-perishable, easy open, individual servings of protein, fruit, snacks and beverages. The Pantry is administered by the Multicultural Center and Women’s Center.

Community Photo Project (CPP) PUB Lobby
Join us in creating a visual community collage that represents our various campus communities. Multiple backdrops and art supplies will be available all week to help with your creative expression! Take pictures and share as you would like, however, we will also collect some of these images to create a unique collage that will be displayed on Shoreline’s campus.

Solidarity Wall – PUB Lobby
Opportunity to stand in solidarity with students affected by recent campus defacements and to respond to those who perpetrated them. Hosted by the Student Diversity Coalition (SDC).

Organized by F-Stop Photography Club and the Student Leadership Center, this photo exhibit is a response to the recent acts of poster defacement on our campus. It is a celebration and appreciation of the stories that comprise our diverse community.

And don’t forget these events happening ALL WEEK!

Disability History Exhibit
(This week only May 11-15, 2015).

The Disability History Exhibit is a 22-panel collage that traces 3,000 years of seldom-told history. From antiquity to the present, the exhibit brings viewers through an illustrated timeline that shows society’s attitudes and how they affect the lives of people with disabilities. Viewers experience powerful feelings as they notice similarities between ancient practices and modern stereotypes. The exhibit is accessible at many levels, striking a balance between easily grasped information and a comprehensive history viewed from multiple angles. This display was brought to campus by the Library and OSS, which houses Disability Services for Students (SSD). Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. It asks the questions – Who are the community members harmed by these acts? How does our campus community respond to these actions? From Defacement to a Dream: Building Community articulates the need to understand, build and foster the interconnectedness and sense of belonging needed to create a socially just and equitable campus. Attendees will view American Indians in their natural habitats. From the Rez to the City, who are American Indians? First Nations? Native Americans? What do you even call them? Hosted by Howie Echohawk of Shoreline’s First Nations student organization.

Students Here and There
PUB 9202 from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
American students and International students will have the opportunity to share experiences they have at Shoreline Community College. They will be able to talk about their learning experiences and interactions at Shoreline. We will have small group questions and in the end we will have a whole group report-out about their experiences. The goal of this session is to see if the students will show social interaction out of their comfort zone.

Faculty Diversity at Shoreline Community College – PUB 9208 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
With 85% of SCC’s faculty being Caucasian, racial diversity in faculty is looking bleak. How do we address this issue? Why is it important? Come find out and participate as our faculty and others discuss this issue. Hosted and sponsored by the Student Diversity Coalition (SDC). Please read a recent Ebbtide article on the subject here.

With music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by John August, this production centers on the charismatic Edward Bloom – a traveling salesman who lives life to the fullest – and his bigger-than-life tales that delight everyone, except his only son, Will. About to have a child of his own, Will is determined to discover the real truth behind his father’s tall tales.
