restoration2

Shoreline student participants in a previous habitat restoration project at Boeing Creek.

Cap off Earth Week activities with a work party to restore habitat in the Upper Boeing Creek Watershed this Sat., April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet in front of the gate to the track ( at the east end of campus.)

Due to an overuse of the area directly behind the track by residents who allow their dogs to run off leash, the restoration work will concentrate on planting natives and moving woody debris next to the new plants to help protect them from being trampled by wayward dogs. Some invasive plant removal may also take place. This activity will be led by Professors Matt Loper and Chip Dodd. Please bring with you a water bottle, thick gloves, work boots, long sleeved shirts and pants and, if you have them, shovels, pruners and hand clippers. Some refreshments will be provided.

Sounds like work but it’s a lot of fun! We hope to see you there!

Interviewing for work is a tough business. Some of the pitfalls for not winning over the selection panel or HR reps are real, while others may be our imagination getting the best of us. We have to ask good questions based on what we know about the workplace, and meet their questions with concise and thoughtful answers. All the while remembering to curb enthusiasm, anxiety and to never appear too hungry.

Join us this Fri., April 24 in FOSS 5116 from 1-2:30 p.m. for a FREE talk by author, Compassionate Communication Trainer and life coach, Moreah Vestan. Topics covered in this workshop that job seekers can apply to interviewing include:

–How to connect at interviews or when you fill out an application
-How to deal with disappointment and frustration over job hunting
-How to manage difficult interactions with family, friends, at work, etc.

Moreah brings 11 years’ experience in communication training, and has much wisdom to share about maximizing your impact at the interview. There are also tips on choosing how to react, which benefits not only the interview process, but every area of your job search.

Not to be missed! Also the usual great coffee and other delights, compliments of Central Market.

See you Friday – and as always – Good Luck Out There!

seedling giveaway

Students and volunteers with Deep Roots Community Garden give away seedlings for Earth Day 2015.

Earth Day 2015 was pretty awesome around Shoreline’s campus, with free grilled veggies from Patty Pan Cooperative and a seedling giveaway at the Deep Roots Community Garden. We also had a ton of great speakers and student learning about advocacy during Amp Your Voice, and had a great turn out for the Earth Day showing of the 1973 film “Soylent Green.”

Earth Week continues Thurs., April 23 with more awesome activities. Check out these fun events around campus today:

Native Plant Sale, PUB Courtyard – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Come support two local nurseries Go Natives Nursery and Kruckeberg Botanic Gardens that specialize in native plant habitat and the benefits that our yards and local greenbelts receive when we plant natives and remove invasive plants.

Shoreline Community College: The Land We Walk On, PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) – 11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.
Join us as Vicki Stiles, executive director of the Shoreline Historical Museum, presents the history of the land on which Shoreline Community College now stands. Using maps and photos Ms. Stiles will bring to light some interesting information about the College area’s environment.

Rio 2 film showing, PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) – 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Rio 2 (2014) is an animated film about a family of Macaws that discover their way of life is challenged by a changing world, and how illegal logging is impacting the Amazon basin. The film will be followed by a discussion led by ALAS about the impacts of deforestation and what can be done about it.

earth week nature walk

Shoreline students and faculty prepare to take an Earth Day Nature Walk led by Professor Matt Loper.

Tuesday’s Earth Week events were awesome, with a talk on Racial/Restrictive Covenants by Shoreline’s own Dr. J, a showing of the powerful film “Princess Angeline,” which is an examination of the story of the Duwamish people told through the life of the daughter of Chief Seattle, and a nature walk through the gorgeous Boeing Creek Park that borders Shoreline’s campus.

Since Wed., April 22 is the actual day of Earth Day in the midst of this Earth Week celebration, it’s gonna be a doozy! What’s coming up?

From 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) is all about Advocacy and Civic Engagement with Amp Your Voice! a workshop that equips students with some powerful advocacy and civic engagement tools.

TVslide_GAC_AMPSp2015From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., the PUB Courtyard will be home to the Shoreline Farmers Market and sustainable Shoreline Community Groups showcasing their wares.

From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., the Deep Roots Community Garden will be doing a seedling giveaway in the garden North of the 2700 building. Get a free seedling and learn how to make seed starting pots from newspaper and get information about open pollination and seed saving.

Also during this event in the Deep Roots Community Garden, from 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., Patty Pan Cooperative will be on site with cooperatively made Free organic Grilled Veggies (with some from our own Deep Roots Garden). They’ll be given away to raise awareness about the importance of locally sourced organic foods.

From 1:30-3:30 p.m., the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) will turn into a movie house with a showing of Soylent Green, a 1973 film that presents a dystopic future New York City, ravaged by overpopulation, the runaway greenhouse effect and a global food shortage. The film touches on themes of environmental and ecological responsibility, power structures, and social justice in times of climate change, economic shortage, the ethics of human resources and food production.  A discussion will follow the film.

All week long during Earth Week you can stop by the PUB room 9102 and make art out of recycled materials. Also throughout the week don’t forget to turn in any of your old, unwanted electronics to one of three electronic recycling stations set up around campus. Electronic recycling stations are in the PUB lobby (by the whale), the Theater lobby and the lobby of the 2800 bldg.

preparednessOn Wed., April 22, 2015, the 2nd Annual EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS KIT DAY will take place in the main lobby of the PUB, Building 9000.  The event occurs from 10:00am to 2:30pm and is open to everyone. Back by popular demand, the event supports the idea that we hope we will never have to use the kit, but a number of things could happen in our daily lives that could cause us to need an emergency kit.

Stop by to learn how to better prepare yourself for an emergency incident at work, home, and on the road. See the many ideas and options available for pre-made kits, do it yourself lists, and emergency food and water storage preparation.  Take the short, fun quiz to test your knowledge on emergency readiness on campus.

We are excited to announce we will be drawing the name of the employee who attended Winter Quarter’s “Get Ready Take Action” Training and entered the drawing for a new Grab ‘n Go Emergency Kit. The kit is self-contained in a backpack with a 3 day supply of emergency products.

We are grateful to the sponsors that will be supporting this educational event, including: Shelf Reliance – Thrive Foods, Costco, Sam’s Club, the SCC Safety Committee, Student Leadership, and SCC Emergency Management.

We look forward to seeing you there!
