Spring 2015 Community Read FlierStarting April 15

Join the college community in conversation about Coming of Age in Mississippi, an extraordinary personal memoir of a young black woman growing up in the segregated South and joining the struggle by blacks for voting rights.

About the Book

Marked for death by the Ku Klux Klan, Anne Moody survived to tell a story that resonates with today’s headlines about racial tensions and the targeting of African Americans by a white society.

The Community Read is organized by a group of students, staff and faculty.

There’s More!

This Wednesday, the Community Read presents a talk by Shoreline instructor Kathleen Boyd entitled Legacies of Hate: White Nationalism in the Pacific Northwest. She will discuss the history and legacies of white nationalism and white power groups with a focus on the Portland–Seattle corridor.

WebAD_GAC_GDisc_Sp2015Do we need to rethink U.S. foreign policy? Robert Reich identifies four myths of American culture, one of which he calls “The Mob at the Gate,” and is the idea that we see ourselves as “uniquely blessed but continually endangered by foreign menaces.” Reich argues that we need to rethink this and other myths about ourselves and the rest of the world.

What better way to (re)think about the world and America’s role than to share thoughts with friends and neighbors about some of the hottest foreign policy issues confronting the United States today with Shoreline’s Global Affairs Center’s Great Discussions Series, an 8-series event that features talks on a variety of topics key to understanding the world in which we live. Enrollment is limited, so hurry! For more information and instructions on how to register, head here.

The series includes:

April 9: Russia and the Near Abroad
April 16: Privacy in the Digital Age
April 23: Sectarianism in the Middle East
April 30: India Changes Course
May 7: U.S. Policy Toward Africa
May 14: Syria’s Refugee Crisis
May 21: Human Trafficking
May 28: Brazil’s Metamorphosis

blood drive jpeg

Please join us for the Shoreline Community College Blood Drive this Thurs., April 2 from 10am-4pm (closed 12-1pm) in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208). Appointments are encouraged, but walk-in donors are welcomed! To sign up, please call 1-800-398-7888 or visit https://schedule.psbc.org. A photo I.D. is required to donate.

Puget Sound Blood Center has been working on rebuilding their blood inventory for the few weeks and your fellow whole blood donors have been responding in force. Even though their blood inventory has been slowly getting better, they really hope to bring it back to a stable level (i.e. 4-day of blood supply).

If you are feeling well and have an opening in your schedule this Thursday, please lend an arm and help save three lives!
