Join the Global Affairs Center in the PUB 9208 Thurs., Nov. 2 from 7-8:30pm for the panel discussion “Diverse voices in the military: Vietnam and current eras.”
What have been the challenges faced by women and racial & ethnic minorities in the military over time and how have they overcome or otherwise dealt with these challenges? How has their service, return home, and commemoration of their service been similar or different? This discussion is being planned in collaboration with Veterans Services.

Help get the Deep Roots Community Garden ready for the winter. On Thursday, Nov. 2 we’ll be mulching and doing some general cleanup. Come by anytime between noon and 2 pm.
The Deep Roots Community Garden grows food for the campus food pantry and a neighborhood food bank. Get involved in growing food for our students and neighbors. November is national novel writing month (NaNoWriMo) and for the second year running The Kick Off Party for the Seattle area is going to be held here on campus from 10:30pm on Tues., Oct. 31 to 1 a.m. on Wed., Nov. 1 in the Ray Howard Library. The party will be from 10:30pm-12am, with an hour of writing starting at midnight.
It’s free to participate in NaNoWriMo and anyone can join, just go here to sign up.
The Ray Howard library is also hosting Write-In Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on every Wednesday throughout the month of November. Write-ins offer a space for writers to write in a supportive environment and connect to others in the writing community.

NaNoWriMo Kickoff Party: Library

The library is hosting a late night event for National Novel Writing Month. If you haven’t heard, NaNoWriMo is all about writing a 10,000-word novel in just one month and those who attend the party will get a chance to start writing when the clock strikes midnight. Fill out character sheets, do some outlining, and meet others who are prepared to take on the month-long challenge!

The International Education Week (IEW) Photo Contest is open to ALL current Shoreline Community College students.
Theme: “Transitions”
Eligiblity: This photo contest is open to ALL current Shoreline students to enter. Each participant can only submit a maximum of three photos accompanied by a brief caption/title relating to the photo and the stated theme of “transitions”.
Submission deadline: Submissions are DUE November 8, 2017 at 11:59pm. Please email your photos with captions to iwelcome@shoreline.edu using the subject line “IEW Photo Contest”.
Contest timeline:
Exhibition of the top 10 photos selected by the judges will be displayed during IEW events Nov. 13-16 or at the International Education department located on the PUB 3rd floor, 9302.
Public voting will begin on Mon., Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. and end on Wed., Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. Each person can only vote once on their favorite three photos at the exhibition.
Winners will be announced at the International Myths & Tales Panel on Nov. 16 in the PUB 9208. That event is from 12:30-2:30pm.

Both women’s and men’s soccer play at home this Sat., Oct. 28 against Whatcom. Come to the soccer field on the north end of campus to cheer on our Phins. Women play at noon, men take the field at 2:15 pm. #GoPhins!

The Multicultural Center is looking ahead to the annual Students of Color Conference (SOCC) April 12-14, 2018. This conference draws over 800 students from community colleges statewide to Yakima every spring. The conference is planned to be a space where students learn, engage, and build community. The hope is not only to inspire, but also to prepare students with the tools to articulate their own stories in order to cultivate personal truths and help create social change. Applications to attend are due by December 8, 2017.
The theme for this year is – RADICAL LOVE: ACTIVISM IGNITED
Workshop topics are guided by the five main conference themes: Identity Development, Awareness of Others, Skills Development, Social Justice and Social Activism, and Personal Development.
The Students of Color Conference is a transformative educational experience!
