Join us Wed., Feb. 3 at 12:40 p.m. for our weekly meeting of the Community Read of Octavia’s Brood. We meet on Wednesdays in the PUB 9208 from 12:40-1:40 p.m.
This week we’ll be discussing the stories: Small and Bright, In Spite of Darkness, Hollow.

Each year a new book is selected for our Community Book Read. Together we share our impressions and ideas. Weekly analyses of the text are led by a variety of college volunteers, bringing with them their unique backgrounds, expertise and perspectives. This keeps the discussion fresh, lively and relevant.
This year’s book is Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. Octavia’s Brood is a collection of social justice-themed science fiction stories that feature things like time travel, shape shifting, dystopian worlds, re-imaginings of “model minorities” and the possibilities of using visionary fiction to develop new ideas of future worlds. The works are inspired by the writings of Octavia Butler, an award-winning science fiction writer (Kindred, Parable of the Sower, and Lilith’s Brood) who lived in Lake Forest Park before her death in 2006.
The entire campus community is invited to read and discuss the stories inside Octavia’s Brood during winter quarter. Students will be able to receive a FREE copy of the book after signing up!

The next College Council meeting is Tues., Feb. 2 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Admin bldg. (1000) Board Room (1010M).
The College Council is composed of students, classified staff, faculty and administrators and plays an important role in the governance structure of the college. The meetings are open to everyone to attend.

Join us Tues., Feb. 2 in the PUB from 2-4 p.m. for the Winter 2016 International Transfer Fair. University reps will be spread throughout the PUB in the Main Dining Room, Quiet Dining Room, 9201, 9202, and the lobby (see map below).
Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to talk with representatives from universities from Washington State and all over the U.S. (plus a few from Canada)! Representatives from 95 universities will be on campus to answer your questions about transfer requirements, majors, housing, and extracurricular programs at their universities. While the representatives work primarily with international students, domestic students are welcome to attend. Participating universities include Arizona State, Baylor University, Drexel University, Georgia Tech, Seattle University, University of California – Irvine, University of Oregon, University of Washington, WSU, and more. Shoreline’s 2nd annual Queer Film Festival kicks off Mon., Feb. 1 with a screening of KUMU HINA, “a uniquely Hawaiian love story.” The film shows at 12:30 p.m. in the PUB 9208.
KUMU HINA is a powerful film about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernized society of modern day Hawaii. It is told through the lens of an extraordinary Native Hawaiian who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an honored and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader.

College representatives from City University of Seattle and the University of Washington will be on Shoreline’s campus in the PUB lobby Mon., Feb. 1 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.
