The Multicultural Center presents two awesome events this Fri., Oct. 16.
First join us for a viewing of the documentary “The Godmother of Rock and Roll” about music pioneer Rosetta Tharpe. The film will show in the PUB room 9102 at 10:30 a.m.
Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose mixture of spiritual lyrics with rock music made her gospel’s first crossover artist. Often referred to as “the original soul sister”, Rosetta Tharpe’s singing and showmanship has been cited as a major influence on legendary musicians such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Little Richard, among others.
Second, swing by for a frank talk on racism titled “Everyone’s a little bit Racist.” The discussion will happen in the PUB room 9102 from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
The discussion will cover such topic as, When is it okay to tell a racist joke? How about a gay joke? What if they are “based” in truth? Do you think people are too sensitive to these jokes? Join us as we use a song from the upcoming Shoreline Community College production of Avenue Q to springboard a conversation on the issues of: Bias, Microaggressions, Stereotypes, “-ism”s…and why they are NOT okay.

Join us Wed., Oct. 14 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in room 1301 for a workshop on planning for your AA_DTA Transfer degree.
It is recommended that Shoreline Community College students have an educational plan on file. An educational plan is like a roadmap for how to complete the degree requirements found in the program planning guides. In this session, students who intend to complete a transfer degree will learn:
• Where to locate planning guides
• The degree requirements for the program of study
• The importance of taking math and English early
• How previous coursework could be used
• To consider other life commitments like finances, work and family
• Specific course recommendations for four-year colleges
• Why to review a completed educational plan often
If you cannot attend any of these sessions, you can also make an appointment with an advisor.

Global Affairs Center programs begin this week at Shoreline Community College with “Cuba – A Country in Flux” this Wed., Oct. 14, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208).
Tim Payne, who teaches Economics at Shoreline, and Tod O’Driscoll, a freelance photographer who lives in Edmonds, have both traveled to Cuba in recent years, and will share their observations and images of this small but complex country. For more information about the speakers, visit our biographies page.
Cuba, a Caribbean Island nation of 11 million, is experiencing internal and external changes, most noticeably the thaw in relations with the United States. Given that the U.S. embargo on trade with and travel to Cuba has been in place since 1961, it is not surprising that most Americans know little about this place.
What is daily life like for most Cubans? How do they make a living? What are their hopes and dreams? What are the current political and economic realities of life like for Cubans? What about religious freedom? Cuba is a land of contrasts and contradictions, and no matter how many times you have visited, it is a country that is hard to totally wrap your head around and gain a full understanding of its people, culture and traditions.

This year’s Community Reads book is Octavia’s Brood, a science-fiction/fantasy anthology inspired by the work of Octavia Butler and focused on themes of social justice (in many planes of time).
To kick off this semester’s community read, we’re hosting an Introduction to Octavia’s Brood event this Wed., Oct. 14 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on the third floor of the library. Refreshments will be served. We’re going to display a webpage for community reads containing many resources for anyone interested in the book. We’re encouraging students, staff and faculty to attend and learn more about this book and the activities that will be planned around it in the coming year.

Princess Angeline.
Shoreline Community College’s First Nations Club talks back to Columbus on Mon., Oct. 12, with a day of events celebrating Indigenous People’s Day. Students, staff and faculty are invited to join a day of events that challenge non-Native ideas of Indianness and explore contemporary—and nearby—issues of Makah whaling and federal recognition of the Duwamish people. All events are free.
Matika Wilbur: Project 562’s Quest for Real Indians – 9:30 a.m., PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208)
Pesented by Howie Echo-Hawk (Pawnee and Athabaskan), First Nations’ Club, Shoreline Community College. Video and discussion of Wilbur’s (Swinomish and Tulalip) work in challenging visual and cultural images of contemporary Native Americans. Click here more information on Project 562.
Modern Makah Whaling and the Lens of History – 10:30 a.m., PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208)
Presented by Joshua Reid (Snohomish), Ph.D, Departments of History and American Indian Studies, University of Washington. Reid will talk about how history helps us better understand why whaling remains important to Makahs today. It draws from his book, The Sea Is My Country: The Maritime World of the Makahs.
Princess Angeline, film – 11:30 a.m., PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208)
Co-sponsored by Project Pride – This film from independent indigenous filmmaker Sandra Johnson Osawa (Makah) and her partner Yasu Osawa uses the story of Chief Seattle’s oldest daughter—Princess Angeline or Kikisebloo—to explore the history of the Duwamish people and their so-far fruitless quest for federal recognition.
Smoke Signals, movie – 12:30–2:30 p.m., PUB Room 9202
Written, directed, co-produced and mostly acted by American Indians, Smoke Signalsis a road movie within an indigenous flair. With a screenplay written by Sherman Alexi (Spokane-Coeur d’Alene), the movie pokes fun at the way Native Americans are stereotypically imagined in America today and challenges non-Indian viewers to come to terms with Native American experiences and perspectives. Film will be followed with Native comedy shorts and discussion.
