Tutoring services is actively seeking tutors in most subjects for fall quarter. Here’s your chance to give back to your fellow students while earning some extra cash and experience for your resume!
Some courses are regularly in high demand, so we need lots of tutors to keep up (e.g.,computer science, statistics, ESL, and nursing). Some subjects get fewer requests, but we also have a harder time finding tutors to fill them (e.g., geology, geography, astronomy, oceanography, political science, and business technology). We also need tutors to help students with most other subjects, from math, accounting, economics, engineering, biology, chemistry, and physics to English, other languages, communication studies, music/music technology, philosophy, and VCT. We especially benefit from students who feel comfortable tutoring multiple subjects and plan to be on campus for at least a couple more quarters.
Please consider applying online or in person in 1103 where we’ll be located and open for applications and inquiries during most of the summer break.
Thank you!

Tiffany McVeety
This Thursday’s Job Seekers’ Roundtable: Four Factors of Entrepreneurial Goal Setting, with Tiffany McVeety
It’s never too late to start a business. In fact, according to a 2014 Kauffman Foundation study, plus 50 workers have launched their own businesses at a higher rate than 20-34 year-olds every year since 1996. And “[b]usiness owners ages 55-64 represented more than 23% of new entrepreneurs” in 2012. As more boomers retire, this number is predicted to grow.
We’re changing the ways we think about work, careers and starting businesses.
Tiffany will explain the nuts and bolts of getting a Four Point Plan together, and how you can put your interests and hobbies to work for you. As always, tasty refreshments and our Conversation Starter blend of coffee will be served. Hope to see you there!
When:
Thursday, August 11
1-2:30 p.m.
Where:
Shoreline Community College
Building 9000, Room 9202

A recurring topic for Roundtable, but always a subject on everyone’s mind.
Age discrimination is alive and well in the U.S., but there are strategies mature job seekers can employ to improve their chances of overcoming it. Please join the discussion this Thursday as we address unspoken biases, making the best out of veiled ageist lines of interview questioning, looking the part, and fighting the fear! As always with light refreshments, courtesy of Central Market.
See you this Thursday, and as always – Good Luck Out There!
When:
Thursday, July 28 from 1:00-2:30pm
Where:

Join us Thurs., July 21 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the PUB, Room 9202 for a Job Seekers’ Roundtable tackling cover letters.

I’ve seen plenty of letters that seem like they were lifted right off the Internet and don’t address very well the requirements to whatever job position the candidate is applying. Responding to an ad? Before whisking off our resume and letter, we need to make sure we’ve studied the ad to determine how our qualifications match the employer’s requirements. Armed with this information, you can craft a cover letter that positions you as the ideal candidate.
There’s a great method afloat and I’ll show you what it’s about!
We’ll go through a near perfect example of a customized cover letter and discover what those who are selected for interviews are doing, what they aren’t, and why.
Bring your letter on a thumb drive, or email it to me (rcarnell@shoreline.edu), and we’ll project a few and go through them.

This Thursday’s Roundtable: Updated Strategies on Resumes and Cover Letters for Mature Job Seekers

Keeping abreast of the job seeking trends is a big part of staying in the game. How do we spot outdated resume conventions? Is a one-page resume best? Two pages? What should and shouldn’t be included in the work history? Objective Statement or Summary? We’ll also talk about sharing measurable achievements and infusing a “personal brand” into your letter, your resume, and your business cards.
Our new room for the summer is high ceilings, airy – and with windows! Please join us – and with the usual coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market.
When:
Thursday, June 23
1:00-2:30pm
Where:
Shoreline Community College
Building 9000, Room 9202
