GAC Presents: Reckoning with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, PUB 9208

Featuring guest speaker Vicente Rafael, University of Washington, Jackson School of International Studies.
Since the inauguration of President Rodrigo Duterte on June 30, the Philippines has received much attention in the media, unfortunately not all of it good. President Duterte’s domestic policy to date has focused on combating illegal drug trade by initiating a nationwide drug war that has already resulted in more than 2,000 murders. Now he says he is cutting off military relations with the U.S. and has welcomed new relations with China.

Everyday images of agricultural production commonly depict barns, farm animals, irrigation equipment, and of course, big fields. These traditional interpretations continue to dominate our perception of agriculture because of their historical and cultural foundations. However, as consumer demand for locally grown produce rises, so does awareness about the impacts of climate change on food security. Alternative methods like hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics could be a solution to meet the needs of rising populations. Indoor farming is a more sustainable growing option that could mitigate the impacts of climate change, while providing healthy food options to urban and rural food deserts. The social and ethical issues of equal access to food and the cultural perceptions of agriculture will continue to change as new technologies arise.

Workshop: In Their Shoes: Understanding Domestic Violence, PUB 9208
Wed., Oct. 26: 12:30-1:30 p.m.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month – help raise awareness about domestic violence and join in our efforts to end it.
The Counseling Center will facilitate an interactive, scenario-based training where participants move, think, and experience the lives of people impacted by domestic violence.
Participants will make choices about their character’s relationships and move through the scenario by reading about interactions with their partner, family, friends, counselors, law enforcement, and others.
The development of this training was funded by the parents of Dayna Fure – murdered by her ex-boyfriend on May 24, 2004, just before she was to graduate from Stanwood High School – to invest in the lives of others and to turn their grief into action.
WEAR PURPLE – the color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month – during the month of October and use this as a way to tell others why ending domestic violence is important to you.

Since 2001, zombies have become more popular than ever. Why? Zombies tap into historic narratives about Arabs, Muslims, and East Asians. Symbolizing the racial and socioeconomic “Other,” zombies are infused with Orientalist qualities. But, some zombie stories play with and resist these Orientalist ideas — and so can we.

This Friday’s Roundtable (10/14): Great Jobs & Careers at Port of Seattle w/Derek Bender
As the economy, industrial growth, and trade on the Pacific Rim all continue to grow, so will job opportunities at the epicenter of where all of this happens in our region: The Port of Seattle! Additionally, over the next 25 years, it’s predicted by the Port that a total of 300,000 port-related jobs will be added to the region.
Please join Port of Seattle Sr. Employment Representative of HR, Derek Bender for a talk on how to hit the fast track for a Port position, what the Port looks for, and available positions. From less-skilled to admin professional, Derek can talk about the entire range of jobs and careers and how to navigate the hiring process. Náakw (Medicine) is a Tlingit dance group that meets weekly to celebrate ancestry, community empowerment and proper protocols for song and dance presentation. Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of America’s greatest art forms.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

This Friday’s Roundtable: Staying Relevant and Reading Between the Lines

The job picture in our area has changed considerably over the past few years – it’s in fact looking quite good!
But the competition for good jobs is still fierce. This week we’ll talk about “branding up” and growing your network. Also, I’ll project a few job descriptions for a look into deciphering what employers want against our qualifications. As always, with great coffee and light refreshments, compliments of Central Market.
Next week (10/14), Derek Bender from Port of Seattle will pay a visit with his Binder ‘O Jobs. These are good paying opportunities, and he’ll key us all in on just what they look for down at the Port.

Student Life is hiring! Working with Student Life is a great way to get involved, meet new people, and gain leadership experience for your resume.
We currently have two positions open:
- ASG Technological Affairs Officer: Member of the Associated Student Government that maintains the Student Leadership website and chairs the Technology Review Committee. Up to 17 hours per week.
- Student Representatives (Hiring 2): serve as an extension of the Associated Student Government and primarily serve on campus committees and support ASG members with campus projects. Up to 7 hours per week.
Both positions pay $11.11 per hour.
Applications are due on Monday, October 10.

This Friday’s Roundtable (9/30): Transferable and Soft Skills, with Ed Cruver

Soft skills is a term often associated with a person’s “EQ” (Emotional Intelligence Quotient), the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, interpersonal skills, managing people, leadership, etc. that characterize relationships with other people.
Other examples of soft skills: Communicating well verbally, as well as non-verbally. Making good decisions. Adaptability. Problem solving. Commitment, Flexibility, Time Management. There are even more, and we’ll touch on a few this Friday, with Shoreline Senior Center volunteer and longtime Roundtable contributor, Ed Cruver. Do you react when criticized, or calmly consider the criticism? How well do you handle pressure? Do you see things from other’s perspectives? Ed will cover this and more, and of course we’d love to hear your own examples of soft skills and how best to put them to work. Great coffee and treats, compliments of Central Market, and always free!
