Dear students,
Shoreline College Community stands with and among those impacted by various world tragedies and events. The mental and physical wellness of our entire college community is a priority that cannot be overstated. As we grapple with the various acts of violence, unrest, and natural disaster in our local community and across the United States, we acknowledge as an institution with an international footprint here and abroad that global affairs also have an impact on our community’s well-being.
Our reach to spread the value of knowledge, community, and educational justice can sometimes feel limiting. There are multiple events happening simultaneously and as the four of us discussed this memo, we wanted to be mindful of the effects of sending multiple communications around heart-heavy issues that may cause harm to or trigger members of the community. We were also very intentional not to minimize the impact of any event by discussing them together. We hope you will extend grace to us, as our goal is to assist in making Shoreline CC a place where values of inclusion, safety, and support are prioritized
We see the devastation created by natural disasters with the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Our college community is impacted by this shocking event. Families are devastated by the loss of life, homes, jobs, and community. We have the power to advocate for equitable rehabilitation and individually have the power to help by researching ways to donate time, money, and energy, and we encourage you to find a way to help that reflects your best ability to support those internationally and those right here on campus.
While the memo could end here, we also see the political unrest play out in the news, which has a direct impact on members of our community. The most recent example is the “Chinese Balloon” and the implications for our Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities are a concern. We know when the rhetoric grows so do instances of hate crimes. In Washington today, Dr Kahn noticed some of this rhetoric in a presentation he attended and believed it important to raise the flag of awareness now to ensure safety and that we proactively stand up for our Asian and Asian American colleagues and students.
We bear witness to much pain and trauma as a result of the diminishing emphasis on humanity. As an educational institution, it’s our obligation to protect humanity as a mechanism to advance knowledge, civic engagement and workforce preparation. We can serve as a beacon to other communities during these times of perpetual harm locally and abroad.
We will continue to show up in this space individually and collectively to actualize our community standard: Shoreline Community College is a place for students, employees, and the community to pursue excellence in education in an environment dedicated to equity, inclusiveness, and self-reflection. We value respectful, dynamic interactions and lively discussion. We strive to create an environment where everyone is supported and valued. Shoreline Community College does not tolerate hateful, violent, or discriminatory actions that target any person or group based on their beliefs, customs, identity, or affiliations. When one of us is diminished, all of us are diminished.
Should you or someone you know need support, please do not hesitate to connect with the follow resources:

Dear Campus Community,
The Department of Safety & Security was made aware of several parking machine malfunctions this morning. Currently, no daily permits can be purchased from parking machines on campus. The vendor has been contacted and another update will be sent once a technician has completed troubleshooting and repairs. The college has always allowed for a grace period (approximately 1 week) at the beginning of the quarters for Staff Lot violations, Visitor Lot violations, and for vehicles not displaying a parking permit. The grace period for Winter Quarter 2023 will be thru Friday, January 20th. Please note, citations with fines assessed are always enforced (including during grace periods) for ADA parking violations, illegal parking, hazardous illegal parking, and Parent-Child Center parking violations. I hope everyone has a great start to Winter Quarter 2023.

Dear Campus Community,
Following several high-profile incidents that our campus and our neighboring community have recently endured; I spoke about improvements to ensure continued safety and security for our college community. This communication marks the first update, with more to come as we continue to see progress.
Find this update posted on the web!
Department of Safety & Security
1. The Department of Safety & Security is in the process of recruiting and hiring (3) additional Full-time Campus Security Officers. This will bring the Full-time uniformed Campus Security staff to (1) Lieutenant and (9) Campus Security Officers in total.
o When the department is fully staffed; the additional positions will allow the department to move to (2) uniformed personnel being on-duty and on-patrol 24/7/365
2. The Department of Safety & Security is renewing use of trainings provided by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center:
o 8-Hour Crisis Intervention Training
o 40-Hour Crisis Intervention Trainings
o Additional courses are being explored to see if they are available to our department (DEI training, victim interaction training, de-escalation training, etc.).
3. The college is in the process of obtaining information and has started communication with various partners as it considers training and equipping uniformed Campus Security personnel with the AXON Taser 7.
4. The Department of Safety & Security has purchased SOS devices that will allow uniformed Campus Security personnel to send a distress message to 911 if they are incapacitated or unable to contact 911 while in emergency situations.
Campus Physical Security
1. A proposal is being finalized, pending the receipt of quotes from vendors, and is expected to be presented to the Executive Team before the Campus Winter Closure. The proposal will cover upgrades over the next 5 fiscal years (22-23, 23-24, 24-25, 25-26, 26-27).
o Upgrading campus doors so that they can be secured immediately manually secured in the event of a lockdown or active threat.
o Upgrading various on campus intersections and crosswalks with additional safety measures; crosswalk beacons, do not enter signs, and LED stop signs.
o Increasing number of emergency call boxes in parking lots and in more remote areas of campus.
o Additional campus notification system (PA system, lighting indicators, etc.).
o Additional or upgraded fences and gates.
o Additional or upgraded burglary systems.
o Additional signage with Campus Security phone numbers distributed across campus.
2. The Director of Facilities, Kimberlee Clark, is coordinating a lighting specialist to come to campus to analyze and suggest improvements to lighting campuswide.
Campus Community Members
1. ‘CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events)’ training seminars will be offered on a monthly basis, open to students, staff, and faculty; conducted by the Director of Safety & Security.
o The first seminar is to be scheduled for end of January 2023.
o One annual CRASE seminar, conducted by law enforcement partners, will be scheduled during opening week.
o ‘Not So New Employee Orientation to Safety & Security’ and ‘Not So New Student Orientation to Safety & Security’ will be offered on a quarterly basis (starting Winter Quarter 2023), with multiple sessions available during Fall Quarters, should the demand arise.
Additional Notes
1. President Kahn will meet with the Director of Security and Chief of Shoreline Police multiple times throughout each year to ensure that every collaborative effort is being made between the college and Shoreline Police to continue to provide a safe and secure campus. The first meeting in this serious is tentatively set for December 2022.
o Campus Security has 2 fully-marked and outfitted patrol vehicles that it typically uses. When a vehicle is out of service for an extended period of time, we receive loaner vehicles from Washington State or King County fleet services
o The loaner vehicles we receive have no decals and typically no emergency lights.
o They will still have except license plates
o Currently both of our patrol vehicles are out of service (one due to damage sustained during a campus incident and the other due to a major mechanical issue).
o We currently have a Ford Explorer and Chevy Impala as our loaner patrol vehicles.
The safety and security of the college campus, college community, and Campus Security personnel remains paramount in my role. Please feel free to reach out to Campus Security or me with any questions.
Respectfully,
Gregory Cranson
Director | Department of Safety & Security
