Join us this Thurs., August 27 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Workforce Education office (bottom floor of FOSS) for a Job Seekers’ Roundtable exploring the most dreaded interview question: “Tell Me About Yourself.”
So you got the call: You’ve been asked to interview!
It can be a feeling of excitement, even relief, but sometimes accompanied with a bit of anxiety.
What many of us don’t consider is that the interview is more a conversation than it is a test. How do we get past the edginess and jitters of a looming job interview? Being prepared is a given, but being yourself is an imperative! This Thursday we’ll give this subject some airtime. If you haven’t yet, you will get an interview eventually, so you might as well come by, right? So please share some skills and insights, have some laughs – and of course some great coffee and refreshments.
Note: this is our final Thursday meeting of Roundtable. There will be no Roundtable next week, and the meetings will resume on Fridays (same time and place) on Fri., September 11.

Join us Thurs., July 16 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the ground floor of the FOSS building for a Job Seekers’ Roundtable focusing on applicant tracking software and how resumes are sorted.
Today’s job seekers need to spend the time to make sure that our professional resumes can get by the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which is the software that reads your resume and ranks it according to keywords. Today about 65% of medium to large companies are now using Applicant Tracking Systems and this has created a nightmare for job seekers. In fact, a recent study indicated that about 75% of qualified job seekers are being eliminated because they do not know the rules.
We’ll share some of the do’s and don’ts with the usual treats and beverages. Bring your resume on a thumb drive, as we’ll broach other topics to do with resumes.

Join us this Thurs., June 25 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Workforce Education Center on the ground floor of FOSS (5000 building) for a FREE talk on cover letters.
When you find a job you’d like to apply for, how do you approach writing your cover letter? If you’re like most people, it’s with a groan of apprehension rather than a skip and hop of elation. But you don’t have to be a wordsmith to write a great cover letter, you just need to understand what motives the employer has in hiring for the position.
Please join us as we discuss, show off and strategize our cover letters. (Bring your best letter!) Professional editor, Mary Keils, will be on hand to offer her expertise. We’ll of course have coffee and treats available, compliments of Central Market. Have a friend or family member looking for work? Please bring them along!
And as always, Good Luck Out There!

Join us this Thurs., June 18 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the ground floor of the FOSS building (5000) for this week’s Job Seekers’ Roundtable. We’ll tackle how to dress for an interview during the hotter and sometimes more casual months of summer with a workshop by Myriam Mampengu, an Employment Specialist with Goodwill of Puget Sound.
A fun one to kick off summer: When we think of job interview preparation, a common rule of thumb is to investigate the dress code of the potential workplace, and dress equal or just a notch above those doing the interviewing. However, the workplace culture of the Pacific Northwest has been described as unique from the rest of the country (especially in summer!), not only with attire, but also expression, diversity, use of office space, breaks, and employee interaction, to name just a few.
Employment Specialist, Goodwill of Puget Sound, Myriam Mampengu, will share insights on how workplaces have evolved in these areas, and what to consider on how to assimilate with younger workers. Please join us for some coffee, iced tea and discussion as we consider Pacific Northwest workplace culture.

This Fri., June 5 from 1:30-2:30 join us on the ground floor of the FOSS building for a Job Seekers’ Roundtable on transferable skills.
Transferable skills are those you have acquired during any activity in your life — jobs, classes, projects, parenting, hobbies, sports, virtually anything — that are transferable and applicable to what you want to do in your next job. For example, almost every resume I have seen includes the bulleted item “strong communication skills.” But what exactly does that mean? Forms and styles of written communication? Great storyteller? Conveying a positive and likable self-image? All the above?
We often fall into the trap of describing ourselves as a job title, rather than who we really are, and what inspires or motivates us. The fact is, the skills we’ve learned from a lifetime of “you do this, I give you a check,” are just a fraction of everything that makes each one of us unique.
Join us for a discussion about how we might assign our skills to a broader variety of jobs and careers.
As per usual: Strong coffee and sweet treats will be provided, all compliments of Central Market.
And also as usual – Good Luck Out There!
