A Critical Comparison Of The United States and South Africa: PUB 9208

South Africa lies at the southern-most point of the African continent and borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Our campus community is invited to participate in this training that explores gender identities in addition to the language and framework used to critically understand levels of oppression that impact transgender and gender non-conforming people. This training will be facilitated by Ebo Barton who is the Program Manager of Ingersoll Gender Center.
Ingersoll Gender Center is an organization of, by, and for transgender and gender diverse people that provides mutual support through peer-led support groups, advocacy in navigating resources, community organizing, and education — all in the pursuit of collective self-determination.
Jazz Ensemble Concert: Jazz Pathways: Nathan Hale High School

Jazz Pathways is a collaborative concert featuring performances by Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band, Nathan Hall High School Jazz Band, and Shoreline Community College Jazz Ensemble. The concert will commence at 7:00 p.m. in the Performance Arts Center at Nathan Hale High School, 10750 30th Ave. N.E., Seattle, WA. 98125. Each group will have 30 minutes stage time. There will be a short intermission after Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band and Nathan Hale’s performance. Shoreline Community College’s Jazz Ensemble will close the concert.

The tragic story of Matthew Shepard made national headlines in 1998. This 21-year-old gay college student was beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming. Two men were arrested and charged with kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and attempted first-degree murder for the hate crime. One month later, emotions still raw, director Moisés Kaufman and his team began conducting hundreds of interviews with the people of Laramie. From those interviews came The Laramie Project, a brutally honest and thought-provoking “live documentary” about an outraged nation and a stunned Wyoming town.
One of the past decade’s most performed American plays, and also adapted into a 2002 HBO movie, The Laramie Project is a heart-rending theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink as well as the heights of compassion of which we are capable. See the timeless piece at the Shoreline Community College Theater.

Shoreline alumni, Masayoshi Ishikawa, will present his original composition Suite for the Forgotten, a Jazz Orchestra Suite with strings. This is a highly personal piece written in commemoration of Japan’s 2011 earthquake/tsunami & nuclear meltdown to commemorate the victims and their families, as well as to continue raising awareness of the ongoing radiation issues in Fukushima prefecture.
Originally from Fukushima Japan, Masayoshi Ishikawa grew up in a city called Aizu Wakamatsu. He came to the United States in 2003 to begin his formal musical training in Seattle Washington, where he first found his passion for piano and the art of jazz.
We are honored to have Masa return to the Shoreline Music Department as our special guest so he can share his journey of becoming a successful pianist, arranger, and composer with our music students.

If you plan to be on campus on Sat., March 10, take note that 750+ elementary and middle school mathletes, plus teachers and parents, will also be on campus for Shoreline Math Olympiad scheduled from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Set up begins at 6 am.
The competition is for 4-8th-grade students attending public and private schools in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Students test in the morning and enjoy entertainment and awards in the gym starting at 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by Shoreline School District, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, Shoreline Community College, and local businesses.
This event is open to the public. Feel free to stop by and join us for our entertainment and awards ceremony!
Be sure to leave extra time for parking and note that some facilities (PUB, gym, and #1100, 1500, #1700, #1800 classrooms) will be occupied during the event.

North Korea’s continued development of nuclear weapons, along with the tragic death of an American student who arrived in Pyongyang fit and left in a mysterious coma, is likely to dim further prospects of improved relations between North Korea and the U.S. What can be done to improve the situation? Is a military confrontation on the horizon? Come hear speaker Clark Sorenson, Professor of International Studies at Jackson School of International Studies, lend expert opinion on the matter.

The evening will showcase a juried selection of 3- to 10-minute films made by emerging and developing filmmakers working in our community. The top filmmakers will be honored with impressive Golden Sasquatch statues and other prizes, and you can vote for your favorite filmmaker to win the Viewer’s Choice Award! Other categories include Best in Show, Best Comedy, and Best Student Film.
Tickets are $20, parking is free, and popcorn, candy, soda, wine, and beer will be available for purchase. Don’t miss your opportunity to support up-and-coming filmmakers during this fun community event!

Leah Gerrard has worked with metal for twenty years. Her passion for wire was sparked by a jewelry class in Italy, and led her to explore sculpture at Linfield College.
Inspired by a fellow student’s intricate beaded wire baskets, Leah started weaving her own. After making a few beaded baskets, she found that it was the simple skeletal structure of wire that interested her. Self-taught, she experimented with various wires and different weaving techniques.
Leah continues to develop her methods, expanding into large-scale sculpture entwined with found objects. Her process continually evolves in response to challenges created through her designs.

Are you interested in being able to assist someone experiencing a mental health related crisis or non-crisis situation and where to turn for help?
Before you can know how to help, you need to know when to help.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognized program designed to build mental health literacy within our communities — or a basic understanding of what different mental health illnesses and addictions are, how they can affect a person’s daily life, and what helps individuals experiencing these challenges get well.
You will learn about:
· Depression and mood disorders
· Anxiety disorders
· Trauma
· Psychosis
· Substance Use disorders
· How to help someone who may be experiencing thoughts of suicide or harm
Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency — the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well.
Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack — even with no clinical training — becoming a Mental Health First Aider will train you to provide initial help to people experiencing mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis and substance use disorders as well as how to help someone who may be experiencing thoughts of harm or suicide.
This 9-hour training is FREE to Shoreline Community College employees and students and will be offered in two (2) – 4.5 hour sessions:
Friday, February 16 AND Friday, February 23 from 11:00 am – 3:30 pm (Bring your lunch – and an afternoon snack will be provided).
You MUST attend BOTH training sessions to receive a MHFA handbook and become a certified Mental Health First Aider.

Winter International Transfer Fair: PUB Main Dining Room

More than 100 universities from Washington State and around the country will be on campus to answer transfer questions during the Winter International Transfer Fair. Although the university representatives often work mostly with international students, all students are encouraged to attend. A full list of participating universities is available in the International Education Office on the third floor PUB, 9302.

Bring your photo ID and evidence of your income, like an EBT (food) card, Provider One card, DSHS award letter, unemployment award letter, or two recent pay stubs. If you already have an Orca card, get the value loaded onto a LIFT card and start saving!

Speaker: Christopher Strawn, Director, Immigration Law Clinic, University of Washington; and, Staff Attorney, Northwest Immigration Rights Project
There are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the United States. Allowing these immigrants to regularize their status, some argue, is good for the U.S. economy, strengthens national security, and enhances America’s culture. Others oppose amnesty arguing that it only rewards those who have broken our immigration laws. They want immigration reform that focuses on enforcement and upholding the rule of law. This presentation is a collaboration between Global Affairs Center (GAC) and the Office of Students, Equity, & Success
Social Justice Collective Open House: PUB 9208

The Social Justice Collective is committed to creating a campus climate that values equity and social justice at its core. Through collaborative action, the SJC engages and builds awareness of social justice programming and critical pedagogies.
We are a new group that will be recruiting members from all over campus. Come to this meet and greet! Come for pizza! Learn more about social justice and how to participate in social justice action on campus. ALL are welcome.

Come enjoy light refreshments and celebrate this student exhibition with the artists!
Four Shoreline Community College visual arts clubs come together in this exhibition to display artwork created by students involved in club activities throughout the year. F-Stop, Art Club, VCT Club, and Clay Club members present their best work in design, ceramics, printmaking, photography, painting, drawing, and sculpture. These clubs are open to new members from the entire campus community.

Join us as we honor MLK Jr. by serving our community. We will be volunteering at Mary’s Place from 9am-3pm (2-hour shifts). Mary’s Place provides housing, employment, and wellness resources for women and families experiencing homelessness in Seattle. For more information and to sign up.

MLK Jr. Week Keynote Speaker Nikkita Oliver: PUB 9208
Wed., Jan. 17: 12:30-2:30pm
Nikkita Oliver is an organizer, educator, teaching-artist, and attorney. She has been actively involved in social justice movements including Black Lives Matter and No Youth Jail. In 2015, she received the Artist Human Rights Leader Award from the City of Seattle for her artist and activist work. Last year, Oliver ran for Mayor with the Peoples Party of Seattle–a collection of community and civic leaders, lawyers, artists, activists, and teachers.
