Heat Wave Safety Tips

During the high temperatures anticipated this week, please see the following guidance for staying safe.

HEAT SAFETY TIPS:

  • Ensure proper hydration.
    • Drink plenty of water, and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink.  
    • Where possible, avoid drinks with caffeine/sugar which can increase dehydration.  
  • Take regular breaks in cooler areas.
    • Visit cooler spaces on campus (PUB Bldg 9000, Library Bldg 4000, etc) for a break from the heat.
  • Reduce incoming heat and circulate air where possible.
    • Close the shades on windows receiving direct sunlight to reduce heat from entering.
    • Consider the use of fans to move air within your work or living space.

SIGNS to WATCH FOR – HEAT ILLNESS:

Infographic listing signs of heat exhaustion (faint or dizzy, excess sweating clammy skin, nausea/vomiting, rapid, weak pulse, muscle cramps) and signs of heat stroke (throbbing headache, no sweating/hot skin, body temp >103, nausea/vomiting, rapid, strong pulse, loss of consciousness). For heat exhaustions, call Safety & Security (206-235-5860), move to cooler space, drink water. For heat stroke, call 911 and take immediate action to cool the person until help arrives.
