The Multicultural Center presents two awesome events this Fri., Oct. 16.
First join us for a viewing of the documentary “The Godmother of Rock and Roll” about music pioneer Rosetta Tharpe. The film will show in the PUB room 9102 at 10:30 a.m.
Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose mixture of spiritual lyrics with rock music made her gospel’s first crossover artist. Often referred to as “the original soul sister”, Rosetta Tharpe’s singing and showmanship has been cited as a major influence on legendary musicians such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Little Richard, among others.
Second, swing by for a frank talk on racism titled “Everyone’s a little bit Racist.” The discussion will happen in the PUB room 9102 from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
The discussion will cover such topic as, When is it okay to tell a racist joke? How about a gay joke? What if they are “based” in truth? Do you think people are too sensitive to these jokes? Join us as we use a song from the upcoming Shoreline Community College production of Avenue Q to springboard a conversation on the issues of: Bias, Microaggressions, Stereotypes, “-ism”s…and why they are NOT okay.

The Multicultural Center will sponsor workshops, presentations and trainings every Friday in room 9102. For our first Friday of activities, please come and join us Fri. Oct. 9 for a viewing and discussion of two films:
STRUGGLE IN THE FIELDS – PUB 9102 at 10:30 a.m.
September 15-October 15 is Latino Heritage Month!
“The Struggle in the Fields,” examines the importance of Cesar Chavez and his efforts to organize farm workers in the central valley of California. It delineates the various components of Chávez’s strategy for farm worker self determination—strikes, boycotts, pilgrimages, fasts—and emphasizes his commitment to nonviolence and the importance of faith and prayer in achieving his goal. 58 minutes.
THE DELANO MANONGS – PUB 9102 at 11:45 a.m.
October is Filipino American History Month!
“The Delano Manongs” tells the story of farm labor organizer Larry Itliong and a group of Filipino farm workers who instigated one of the American farm labor movement’s finest hours – The Delano Grape Strike of 1965 that brought about the creation of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW). While the movement is known for Cesar Chavez’s leadership and considered a Chicano movement, Filipinos played a pivotal role. Filipino labor organizer, Larry Itliong, a cigar-chomping union veteran, organized a group of 1500 Filipinos to strike against the grape growers of Delano, California, beginning a collaboration between Filipinos, Chicanos and other ethnic workers that would go on for years. 30 minutes.

Pagoda Union Building (PUB)
This year’s theme for Multicultural Week, From Defacement to a Dream: Building Community, calls attention to the ways in which oppression and injustice have manifested in our campus community; most recently through repeated acts of defacement. It asks the questions – Who are the community members harmed by these acts? How does our campus community respond to these actions? From Defacement to a Dream: Building Community articulates the need to understand, build and foster the interconnectedness and sense of belonging needed to create a socially just and equitable campus. Right here, right now.
