A representative from Lake Washington Institute of Technology will be at Shoreline’s campus to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.
Multicultural Center End-of-Quarter Potluck: PUB 9301

Multicultural Center’s End-of-Quarter potluck recognizes student’s achievement within the recognized student organizations (RSO) clubs on Shoreline Community College’s campus. Instrumental music students taking private instruction lessons perform a solo piece in front of a jury of Music Faculty as their final exam. Everyone in the community is invited to attend these jury performances. Admission is free.

Students taking private vocal lessons will perform a selected piece before a jury of vocal instructors who will evaluate their performance. Everyone is invited to attend these jury performances, and admission is free.

Vocal Class Performances: Music Bldg., Room 818

This is the final performance for the quarter for students registered for voice classes. The students choose a solo of their choice for the performance. The music selections for the recital range from present-day composers to Early Baroque pieces. Small ensembles will also perform. The performance is FREE and all from the community are welcome.

Winter Choir Concert: First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach

Students are preparing a recital entitled “Poems”. These pieces will strike a chord in a way that only choral music can: through the heart. Pieces will come from a variety of poets including Sara Teasdale, Euan Tait, and Octavio Paz, as well as folk tunes and traditional. Accompanied and a capella alike, we will perform a variety of music in many styles that focus special attention on conveying a lyric or idea. We will also continue our series on the Vivaldi “Gloria” with four additional movements.

The tragic story of Matthew Shepard made national headlines in 1998. This 21-year-old gay college student was beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming. Two men were arrested and charged with kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and attempted first-degree murder for the hate crime. One month later, emotions still raw, director Moisés Kaufman and his team began conducting hundreds of interviews with the people of Laramie. From those interviews came The Laramie Project, a brutally honest and thought-provoking “live documentary” about an outraged nation and a stunned Wyoming town.
One of the past decade’s most performed American plays, and also adapted into a 2002 HBO movie, The Laramie Project is a heart-rending theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink as well as the heights of compassion of which we are capable. See the timeless piece at the Shoreline Community College Theater. Directed by Debra Pralle.

The Small Ensemble Recital is considered to be a “talent showcase” for our dedicated music students at Shoreline Community College. This is their time to shine in the spotlight and to have an opportunity to perform in front of their peers. Students are chosen by their instructors to perform at the recitals, and the criteria require students to have been involved in a music ensemble throughout the quarter.
This is an invaluable experience for our students to build confidence musically through focused preparation, and the opportunity to perform in front of an audience helps them develop their stage presence. Everyone is welcome to attend in support of our student performers.

If you plan to be on campus this Sat., March 10, take note that 956 elementary and middle school mathletes and their teachers and parents will also be on campus for Shoreline Math Olympiad scheduled from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Set up begins at 6 am.
Be sure to leave extra time for parking and note that some facilities (PUB, gym, and #1100, 1500, #1700, #1800 classrooms) will be occupied during the event.
The competition is for 4-8th-grade students attending public and private schools in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Students test in the morning and enjoy entertainment and awards in the gym starting at 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by Shoreline School District, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, Shoreline Community College, and local businesses.

Our campus community is invited to participate in this training that explores gender identities in addition to the language and framework used to critically understand levels of oppression that impact transgender and gender non-conforming people. This training will be facilitated by Ebo Barton who is the Program Manager of Ingersoll Gender Center.
Ingersoll Gender Center is an organization of, by, and for transgender and gender diverse people that provides mutual support through peer-led support groups, advocacy in navigating resources, community organizing, and education — all in the pursuit of collective self-determination.
Jazz Ensemble Concert: Jazz Pathways: Nathan Hale High School

Jazz Pathways is a collaborative concert featuring performances by Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band, Nathan Hall High School Jazz Band, and Shoreline Community College Jazz Ensemble. The concert will commence at 7:00 p.m. in the Performance Arts Center at Nathan Hale High School, 10750 30th Ave. N.E., Seattle, WA. 98125. Each group will have 30 minutes stage time. There will be a short intermission after Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band and Nathan Hale’s performance. Shoreline Community College’s Jazz Ensemble will close the concert.

Guest Speaker/Pianist: Masa Ishikawa: Music Bldg, Room 818

Shoreline alumni, Masayoshi Ishikawa, will present his original composition Suite for the Forgotten, a Jazz Orchestra Suite with strings. This is a highly personal piece written in commemoration of Japan’s 2011 earthquake/tsunami & nuclear meltdown to commemorate the victims and their families, as well as to continue raising awareness of the ongoing radiation issues in Fukushima prefecture.
Originally from Fukushima Japan, Masayoshi Ishikawa grew up in a city called Aizu Wakamatsu. He came to the United States in 2003 to begin his formal musical training in Seattle Washington, where he first found his passion for piano and the art of jazz.
We are honored to have Masa return to the Shoreline Music Department as our special guest so he can share his journey of becoming a successful pianist, arranger, and composer with our music students.

Matika Wilbur’s most recent endeavor, Project 562, has brought her to over 400 tribal nations dispersed throughout 45 U.S. states. In her travels, she has taken thousands of portraits and collected hundreds of contemporary narratives from the breadth of Indian Country all in the pursuit of one goal: To Change The Way We See Native America.

“From the Ashes” Panel Discussion: Room 2201

Multi-disciplinary Discussion: Professors from a variety of disciplines will help facilitate a discussion of the film, From the Ashes, and its issues. North Korea’s continued development of nuclear weapons, along with the tragic death of an American student who arrived in Pyongyang fit and left in a mysterious coma, is likely to dim further prospects of improved relations between North Korea and the U.S. What can be done to improve the situation? Is a military confrontation on the horizon? Come hear speaker Clark Sorenson, Professor of International Studies at Jackson School of International Studies, lend expert opinion on the matter.

The Student Afternoon Recital is considered to be a “talent showcase” for our dedicated music students at Shoreline Community College. This is their time to shine in the spotlight and have an opportunity to perform in front of their peers. Students are chosen by their private music instructors to perform at the recital.
This is an invaluable experience for students to build confidence musically through focused preparation, and the opportunity to perform in front of an audience helps them develop their stage presence. Everyone is welcome to attend this free concert in the Music Building in Room #818.

Shoreline Short Short Film Festival: Campus Theater (1600 Bldg)

Filmmakers from across Washington have submitted their “short short” films and you’re invited to see the best of the best during the 2018 Shoreline Short Short Film Festival in the state-of-the-art Shoreline Community College Theater. Doors open at 6pm for drinks, snacks, and schmoozing.
The evening will showcase a juried selection of 3- to 10-minute films made by emerging and developing filmmakers working in our community. The top filmmakers will be honored with impressive Golden Sasquatch statues and other prizes, and you can vote for your favorite filmmaker to win the Viewer’s Choice Award! Other categories include Best in Show, Best Comedy, and Best Student Film.
Tickets are $20, parking is free, and popcorn, candy, soda, wine, and beer will be available for purchase. Don’t miss your opportunity to support up-and-coming filmmakers during this fun community event!
This event is presented with support from Shoreline Community College, the City of Shoreline, City of Lake Forest Park, 4Culture, and individual donations from people like you.

Join us for a free afternoon concert featuring the performances of students enrolled in the Jazz Improvisation class, directed by our award-winning music faculty, Steve Kim. The band is typically comprised of students playing guitar, bass, drum, keys/piano, and various horns. We may even feature a vocalist or two. Listening to LIVE music in the middle of your day is a great way to take a break and become inspired.

Featuring speaker Dr. Mimi Harvey, Faculty (Communications Studies), Shoreline Community College
Contemplative pedagogy is an approach to education that “shifts the focus of teaching and learning to incorporate ‘first person’ approaches that connect students to their lived, embodied experience of their own learning.” Dr. Harvey has studied and used in her classes this powerful tool for learning for many years. Recently, she lectured and led workshops on the subject at Thammasat University in Thailand. She will discuss the meaning and application of Contemplative Learning, and how it can benefit students at Shoreline.
Express Yourself Showcase: Off-campus at Darrell’s Tavern

Join us for a showcase of eclectic performances featuring our talented Shoreline Community College music students. Bands, instrumentalists, rappers, DJs, and vocalists will perform their original compositions in a range of styles, from acoustic to electronic.
