This Friday’s Roundtable (1/22): Pros and Cons of Working From Home

Experience in the field (and life with a freelancer) dictates to me that there are more pros than cons. Roundtable participant, and stay-at-home freelance editor, Mary Keils, will be on hand to help get the conversation started.

Lots of info online about this topic, but nothing beats real life experiences. Please come by to share. We’ll talk about researching home based employment, the opportunities in our area, tips on motivation, getting set up, the tax situation, and other topics. All this of course with great coffee and snacks, compliments of Central Market.

See you this Friday – and as always, Good Luck out there!

Friday’s Roundtable (1/15): Hiring Event: Krista Baker from Big 5 Sporting Goods.

This FREE event is in the Workforce Education office (bottom floor FOSS, 5000 bldg.) from 1-2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15.

With spring around the corner (yes, it really is!), Big 5 is gearing up for outdoor sports: Fishing, biking, canoeing, rafting, camping, etc. Big 5 is one of the country’s biggest retailers for sporting goods and accessories. Whether you are a career-minded professional looking for management opportunities, a sales or cashiering specialist looking for full-time employment, or a student looking for an exciting part-time job, Big 5 has an opportunity for you. Come by and meet Big 5’s Krista Baker, who will answer questions about applying and which stores are looking for great customer service and other positions.

Also, let’s take a look at our LinkedIn pages. Are you letting your contacts know what you do? Who you are? What you can bring to the table? Let’s talk about some great examples.

Coming in March: Most of us have been to Trader Joe’s. You have probably noticed that the customer service folks are always friendly and helpful. My guess is employees are treated right, and TJ’s is a fun place to work. Good pay, benefits, the works. Did you know that the Shoreline Trader Joe’s is about to open on 175th near Aurora? The new store’s Captain will be on hand to talk about careers, who they hire, when and why. We don’t yet know which Friday he’ll be by, but when I find out, this will be a sign-up Roundtable. I will keep you posted.

See you Friday – and as always, Good Luck Out There!

job-seekers-roundtableJoin us this Fri., Jan. 8 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Workforce Education office (bottom floor of FOSS, 5000 bldg.) for this week’s Roundtable: Get Hired by CSR Marine!

For our immediate area, 2016 is looking to be a huge boating year, and Shilshole Bay will be hopping!

If you like sailing or just working in a boating environment with a casual crew, CSR’s Scott Anderson will be on hand to let you know what it’s all about.

With two boatyards in the greater Seattle area, even during slow times, CSR is always seeking out qualified applicants to fill a variety of roles, from Travelift operators, painters, laminators to office staff, riggers and electronics installers. Scott will let you know how it all works. If you prefer the south end, there are also CSR possibilities in Des Moines.

Also on Friday, we’ll talk a bit about hiring and job trends, with Employment Specialist, Stephanie Tschanz for 2016, and just reconnect from the couple Fridays we were off.

Will be good to see you! As we’re dead-center of High Coffee Season, expect some delectable brew and the usual dunkables.

See you this Friday – and as always, Good Luck Out There!

job-seekers-roundtable“The most interesting and thoughtful over-50 people I have met are those who still have no idea what they want to do.”

This Fri., May 8 join us in FOSS 5116 from 1-2:30 p.m. for a discussion about what it takes to uncover what you want from a career.

When we were young and plotting our career paths and personal lives, most of us thought very little of the day we might have to reinvent ourselves. This is approached with maybe some deeper digging than we could have ever thought necessary. For this deeper career excavation, we need to identify personal meaning and pleasure indicators and how they intersect with our strongest skills.

Please join us this Friday (5/8) and share your experiences on this subject. We’ll talk about six basic pathways suggested by career coach, Cheryl Simpson.

Settled on a job choice? As always, the floor is open for sharing how you found your path, along with the ups and downs of your job search and strategies; all with the usual delicious coffee, snacks, and networking.

Hope to see you this Friday – and as always: Good Luck Out There!
