Dear Student,

The U.S. midterm election this week has generated a large amount of civic engagement and the passionate exchange of many viewpoints.

As a community of diverse people, we at Shoreline value opportunities to both share our own points of view and allow others to express theirs. As a public community college, we are obliged to both uphold the right to free speech and expression, and affirm our identity as a respectful and inclusive learning community.

As always, we want our campus to remain a place of open inquiry and learning, modeling the ideals set out in our Community Standard. While we may sometimes be uncomfortable with differing points of view, we have a common standard to hold these conversations in a respectful manner.

If you or any students you know are feeling anxious or stressed about the current political climate, please encourage them to reach out to our Counseling Center for support (206-546-4594, FOSS Building). Please also know that our Safety & Security team is aware that members of our campus community may be feeling a heightened sense of concern at this time and is maintaining a proactive presence on the campus.

I encourage each of us to listen, look, and actively participate in respectful dialogue that will help us learn together, as a community.

Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Dear Student,

As we observe Veterans Day on November 12, we have an opportunity to thank our nation’s veterans for their service to our country. Many veterans study, teach, and work alongside us here at Shoreline Community College. They enrich our college and we are grateful for their contributions to this country and to our campus community.

On this holiday, I hope you will join me in taking time to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of all of our veterans, as well as those who continue to serve.

With appreciation,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

The Ray W. Howard Library is hosting a Creative Writing Contest. The theme is Crossing Borders, and submissions will be accepted from Shoreline Community College students from November 12 through November 30. The short-story submissions should be between 800 – 2000 words, define the value of crossing borders (physically or metaphorically), use correct grammar and punctuation, and be the author’s own, original work.

The winner will have their story published in the college’s literary magazine, Spindrift, and will be announced in The Ebbtide. The first, second, and third place prizes are pretty exciting and we’re all quite jealous of the goodies our winners will receive. Entries may be submitted to Tferris@shoreline.edu with Crossing Borders in the subject line of the email. This contest is open to students only.

On Monday, November 5, we’ll be updating the styles of the College website (shoreline.edu) and implementing a revised menu header (below).

What does this mean?
You’ll see new fonts, colors, left menu layout, heading sizes, and button shapes. Content will not change at this point – just the look and feel of the site.

The Current Students page (now called “Students”) will appear at the top, on the left side of the secondary menu.

The Class Schedule (now called “Classes”) will also appear on the left side of the secondary menu.

The search bar will be moved to the right side of the screen.

More website redesign work will continue in 2019 as we overhaul other sections of the site to make them easier for you to use and find what you’re looking for. If you have any questions, please email websupport@shoreline.edu.

Thank you!

Dear Student,

On Thursday, October 18, a student discovered a Project Pride National Coming Out Day poster torn into pieces on the floor of the PUB elevator. A report was submitted via the Community Standard email account, which activated the College’s Community Standard response protocol.

It is important that the College be able to track any incidents of bias, harassment, or vandalizing of college property (including posters), so that an appropriate investigation and response can be made, and any trends can be identified:

  • If you are concerned for anyone’s physical safety, call Safety & Security (206-546-4633), or 911 if it’s an emergency.
  • If you witness or are made aware of any actions that go against our Community Standard, report it to the Community Standard email account to initiate an investigation and response.

If you know of anyone who was affected by the incident on Thursday and may still be in need of support, please refer them to the Counseling Center (206-546-4594, FOSS Building 5000).

We have a powerful Community Standard Statement:

“Shoreline Community College is a place for students, employees, and the community to pursue excellence in education in an environment dedicated to equity, inclusiveness, and self-reflection. We value respectful, dynamic interactions and lively discussion. We strive to create an environment where everyone is supported and valued. Shoreline Community College does not tolerate hateful, violent, or discriminatory actions that target any person or group based on their beliefs, customs, identity, or affiliations. When one of us is diminished, all of us are diminished.”

The more we understand what’s happening on campus the better we can respond with a collective action and ensure Shoreline is a respectful, welcoming place for all.

Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Dear Students,

The annual October event, The Great ShakeOut, has become part of the Shoreline Community College culture with staff, faculty, and students participating annually. This year’s shakeout event is on Thurs., Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m.

The ShakeOut has been an excellent awareness tool for encouraging all departments on our campus to prepare for emergencies and disasters. This year, areas of the U.S. were severely impacted by hurricanes and wildfires, and our Pacific Northwest region can also be potentially impacted by a different natural hazard threat: earthquakes. So please remember to Drop, Cover, Hold On.

This year Shoreline Community College will be participating in this worldwide earthquake preparedness awareness effort by testing a classroom alert notification system called LYNX. All smart classrooms on campus have a LYNX software program enabled and located on the instructor’s main computer. The LYNX system will allow Shoreline Emergency Management team members to send an alert communication inside the classrooms via projection screen. If you are interested in how LYNX alert system works, please view the LYNX training video posted on CANVAS.

When:
The ShakeOut for this year is scheduled for October 18, 2018 at 10:18 a.m. Everyone on campus is encouraged to participate.

What to Do:
At Shoreline, college officials suggest three things to get ready for the Great Washington Shakeout drill:

#1. Read the plan
– Go to http://www.shoreline.edu/safetyandsecurity/emergency-preparedness.aspx to see Shoreline’s emergency preparedness information and the Emergency Management Response plan.
– Go to  https://www.shakeout.org/washington/

#2. Make sure you that you are signed up to receive the campus RAVE ALERT messages
– Go to https://www.shoreline.edu/Connect to add phone numbers and additional email accounts to your message preferences

#3Do the drill on Oct. 18th at 10:18 a.m.
If it is appropriate for where you are:
– DROP to the ground
– Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table
– HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops

In addition, demonstrations of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and Stryker evacuation chairs will take place from 11:00 a.m-12:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 18th, in the main lobby of 9000 Building.

Remember, the LYNX message will only be a test.

Respectfully,
Edwin Lucero
