Vincent C.H. Yao, Director-General Taipei Economic and Cultural Office
Seattle, will present a talk on Taiwan-U.S. Relations on Thurs., Feb. 9 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the PUB 9208.
• What is the present relationship between Taiwan and the U.S., and what might it look like in the future?
• What is the role of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in advancing mutual understanding and commerce?
Taiwan has made many important contributions to Asian culture. According to the U.S. Department of State’s Taiwan Fact Sheet, “The United States and Taiwan enjoy a robust unofficial relationship” despite the fact that in 1979 the U.S. switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, to Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China. With us to discuss Taiwan’s history and culture, and the role of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in advancing cultural understanding and commercial relations in the Pacific Northwest, is Vincent C.H. Yao, the Director-General of TECO in Seattle

Come prepared to perform a short one- to three-minute monologue. Please, audition not to exceed 3 minutes.

We are also looking for students who are interested in tech work to assist in the production. Students can get musical theater performance credits, drama credits, or stage technical credits. Auditions are open to the community, but everyone involved in the production must register for some type of Shoreline Community College credit. The college is participating in the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE, often called “Sessy”) this quarter. The survey was last administered in 2015 and the results from this new survey will to continue to inform efforts in creating an environment that enhances the student learning experience here at Shoreline.
The survey will be administered in person in about 55 classes from February 6th – March 13th. To generate a representative sample of students, national CCSSE office personnel will select which classes are surveyed by using a stratified random sampling technique. It is anticipated that it will take most if not all of one class period for students to complete the survey.
“I realize it is a great hardship to sacrifice a class period to gather this information, but I believe the CCSSE data are even more relevant now than they have been in the past,” says Alison Stevens, Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. “The results of the Winter 2015 survey suggest that, compared to other similar schools, we are essentially average in how we engage students. Fortunately for us, we now have a strategic plan designed to move us from average to extraordinary.”

This Friday’s Roundtable: Get Placed w/Terra Staffing

Terra Staffing employment specialist and recruiter, Sarah Hoffman will join the conversation at Shoreline Community College Job Seekers’ Roundtable with details about Terra, what you might expect during a placement interview, and who’s hiring. Word is that office staffing companies are at the very least even with requests for workers, and numbers of workers to be hired. So it’s a strong possibility that if you need something fast in the temp or temp-to-perm sphere, Terra could be your last stop.

It’s Scholarship time again! The 2017/2018 Shoreline Community College Foundation’s Annual Scholarships are now available online. Last year the Shoreline Community College Foundation gave away over $200,000 in student financial assistance. With over 43 Annual Scholarships and 17 Ongoing Scholarships; students can seek assistance for tuition, school fees, books and emergency needs.
The Annual Scholarships applications are available online at http://www.shoreline.edu/foundation/scholarships.aspx. Applications must be completed and submitted through our online portal by Friday, March 31, 2017 by 11:59 p.m.
To setup an account on our scholarship site, current students will need to use their go.shoreline.edu email to create a login.
High School students applying for 2017/2018 scholarships will need to complete the free admissions form at http://www.shoreline.edu/apply-and-aid/apply.aspx prior to setting up an account.
All information including references, essays, budget worksheets, and transcripts will need to be submitted with the online application.
Students will be notified of awards by May 2, 2017. Presentation of the scholarship awards will be held on May 10, 2017 at the college and must be attended by recipients of scholarships.
