Join Shoreline Community College – International Education department on Thurs., Feb. 2 for guest performer Jesse Appell’s bilingual Great LOL of China Tour in the PUB 9208 from 3-4 p.m. Jesse Appell is a Fulbright Scholar Alumni whose research focuses on Chinese humor and performance. He is also a disciple of master Xiangsheng performer Ding Guangquan, and regularly performs Xiangsheng, bilingual improv comedy, and Chinese stand-up live and on TV.
Jesse performed at UW and it was very successful. Audience members asked questions until 7 p.m. at an event that was supposed to end at 5 p.m. By combining jokes and fun facts, Jesse has made the show very informative and interesting. Come to this great show! There will also be free refreshments and prizes!

Dear Student,
In the past few days, federal immigration policy has shifted, leaving many questions and concerns about how this impacts us as individuals, as a college community, and as a nation.
On Monday, I sent a message regarding our international students – for whom the College issues immigration documents – to let them know that we recommend they refrain from international travel while enforcement of the new Executive Order is clarified.
I also want to extend my support to all students who come to Shoreline to study, including those who have status as immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, permanent residents, and naturalized citizens.
As stated in a campus message on January 3, our students’ education records – including information regarding immigration status – are protected by federal privacy laws. Our college has no legal obligation or affirmative duty to enforce federal immigration law; that is the responsibility of federal law enforcement agencies.
This means we do not request immigration documentation except as needed to process international student paperwork and to determine the eligibility of resident tuition rates. We do not make admissions decisions about students based on immigration status, nor do our campus security detain or question people based on suspicion of undocumented status.
Shoreline is proud to have a strong legacy as a college that welcomes learners from all backgrounds and nationalities. We remain steadfast in our commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive campus for all.

Join us as we celebrate the start of the year of the rooster! Shoreline Community College – International Education department is partnering with the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington to host the Lunar New Year 2017 celebration event on Tues., Jan. 31 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208). This event is FREE and open to the community. You will learn about Lunar New Year traditions in China, South Korea, and Vietnam. You will also enjoy delicious food and interesting activities prepared for you.

In response to student demand, there is now a new student club on campus: The Environmental Club!
Our first meeting is this Fri., Feb. 3 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Greenhouse/pond area adjacent to 2602. This club will be focused on discussing and learning about environmental issues, hands-on growing, volunteerism, and connecting with others. Everyone is invited to participate, so spread the word to your friends! Bring your lunch and eat while we meet.

This is the third in a workshop series is for post-baccalaureate students preparing for graduate health professional schools, such as dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and other. Dr. Frank Wendler: DAAD Visiting Professor, Department of Political Science and the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington.
While the United States continues to be a key political partner and ally in Europe, new challenges have arisen recently, including:
• The future economic, political and military partnership between Europe and the U.S.
• The rise of populist politics and anti-immigrant rhetoric in both the U.S. and Europe
Dr. Wendler, who recently published a book about European regional politics and political polarization, argues that recent developments, including the rise of populism in both the U.S. and in Europe, reflect long-standing challenges since the end of the Cold War rather than entirely new ones.

Dear Student,
As you may have heard, President Trump has issued an Executive Order banning certain nationalities from entering the United States. The college is advising international students not to travel outside the United States, including trips to Canada.
International students who have questions should contact the International Education office in Building 9000, room 9302.
If you are experiencing any emotions that are unsettling or concerning, there are counselors available to support you. The Counseling Center is located in Building 5000, room 5245.
