A road paving project is underway north of the east entrance to campus down by the Greenwood parking lot. It is scheduled to continue through Friday of this week and may cause congestion in the area, so commuters are encouraged to access the college via a different route or to allow extra time in your travel plans.

The Shoreline Honors Program is now accepting applications for the 2015-16 school year. This program allows students to work closely with faculty on developing a research agenda for the one-year course of study. Students earn 10 credits (5 of which can be used to satisfy Humanities or Social Sciences distribution requirements).

The Honors Program is designed to offer a challenging curriculum for students planning to transfer to four-year institutions of higher learning or who simply wish to deepen their college experience. Students enrolled in the Honors program also have an exciting opportunity to present at the UW Undergraduate Research Symposium during spring quarter.

Check out the Honors program brochure here and, if interested, access the application form here.

water station
More refillable water stations have made their way to Shoreline’s campus. A couple of weeks ago, stations arrived in the FOSS, 1800, 3000 and 2700 buildings. Now there are two more stations up and operational – one each in the lower and middle floors of the PUB (9000 bldg). Two additional units are slated to arrive later in the summer: they will be located on the lower floor of the 2900 building and on the main floor of the Library.

These refillable water stations are FREE and designed to work with sport bottles.

Why the investment in refillable water stations, and why should you use them? According to banthebottle.net:

  • Making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. And that’s not even including the oil used for transportation.
  • The energy we waste using bottled water would be enough to power 190,000 homes.
  • Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles, but only recycled 38.
  • Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. However, the U.S.’s recycling rate for plastic is only 23 percent, which means 38 billion water bottles – more than $1 billion worth of plastic – are wasted each year.
  • The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 per year; that same amount of bottled water is about $1,400.
  • Antimony, which is found in PET plastic bottles, in small doses can cause dizziness and depression; in larger doses it can cause nausea, vomiting and death.

blood drive
Don’t forget the summer campus blood drive happening Thurs., July 30 in the PUB Quiet Dining Room from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (closed 12-1 p.m.).

The summer heat wave has made this donation period all the more critical. The hot weather has caused many area blood drives to shut down early or even be cancelled altogether, meaning inventory of blood units isn’t stable.

There are plenty of openings to accommodate all donors! Walk ins are welcomed day of, or you can click here to schedule an appointment in advance.

It only takes 45 minutes (or less) to donate one pint of blood and save three lives! Double your impact by bringing a friend along. Photo I.D. Required.
