Wow there’s a lot going on around campus this week for Multicultural Week! Here are the awesome events for Mon., May 18:
Deep Roots Garden Plant Sale – In front of PUB Main Entrance from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Stop by and purchase your spring transplants and learn more about SCC’s community garden!
Community Standards Input Session – PUB 9208 from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Join us in the development of our Community Standard- a response to the defacement and other events that have occurred on campus this year.
Impact of “Isms” – PUB 9202 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
An exploration of the emotional, social, spiritual, and academic impact of structural oppression.
Deface Me: A Photo Exhibit – PUB 9208 from 12:30–1:30 p.m.
Organized by F-Stop Photography Club and the Student Leadership Center, this photo exhibit is a response to the recent acts of poster defacement on our campus. It is a celebration and appreciation of the stories that comprise our diverse community.
And don’t forget these events happening ALL WEEK!
SCC Pantry Food Drive PUB Lobby and multiple locations on campus
Help support SCC students who truly cannot otherwise afford or access a meal. We are accepting donations of non-perishable, easy open, individual servings of protein, fruit, snacks and beverages. The Pantry is administered by the Multicultural Center and Women’s Center.
Community Photo Project (CPP) PUB Lobby
Join us in creating a visual community collage that represents our various campus communities. Multiple backdrops and art supplies will be available all week to help with your creative expression! Take pictures and share as you would like, however, we will also collect some of these images to create a unique collage that will be displayed on Shoreline’s campus.
Solidarity Wall – PUB Lobby
Opportunity to stand in solidarity with students affected by recent campus defacements and to respond to those who perpetrated them. Hosted by the Student Diversity Coalition (SDC).

As part of the Community Read of Anne Moody’s book Coming of Age in Mississippi, an extraordinary personal memoir of a young black woman growing up in the segregated South and joining the struggle by blacks for voting rights, we’ll be showing the film The Children of the Civil Rights Movement on Fri., May 15. Join us in the PUB 9202 from 12:30-2 p.m. for the film and a discussion after.

and the Library are proud to bring you
Disability History Exhibit
(This week only May 11-15, 2015).
A panel from the Disability History Exhibit on display in the SCC library through Fri., May 15.
The Disability History Exhibit is a 22-panel collage that traces 3,000 years of seldom-told history. From antiquity to the present, the exhibit brings viewers through an illustrated timeline that shows society’s attitudes and how they affect the lives of people with disabilities. Viewers experience powerful feelings as they notice similarities between ancient practices and modern stereotypes. The exhibit is accessible at many levels, striking a balance between easily grasped information and a comprehensive history viewed from multiple angles. This display was brought to campus by the Library and OSS, which houses Disability Services for Students (SSD). Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. This year’s theme for Multicultural Week, From Defacement to a Dream: Building Community, calls attention to the ways in which oppression and injustice have manifested in our campus community; most recently through repeated acts of defacement. It asks the questions – Who are the community members harmed by these acts? How does our campus community respond to these actions? From Defacement to a Dream: Building Community articulates the need to understand, build and foster the interconnectedness and sense of belonging needed to create a socially just and equitable campus. Right here, right now.

Students perform their Spoken Word poetry as groups, duets, and individuals around issues of social injustice. Vote for your favorite performances!
Noble Savages: From the Medicine Man to Reality – PUB 9202 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Attendees will view American Indians in their natural habitats. From the Rez to the City, who are American Indians? First Nations? Native Americans? What do you even call them? Hosted by Howie Echohawk of Shoreline’s First Nations student organization.

Friday – 5/22
Students Here and There – PUB 9202 from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
American students and International students will have the opportunity to share experiences they have at Shoreline Community College. They will be able to talk about their learning experiences and interactions at Shoreline. We will have small group questions and in the end we will have a whole group report-out about their experiences. The goal of this session is to see if the students will show social interaction out of their comfort zone.
Faculty Diversity at Shoreline Community College – PUB 9208 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
With 85% of SCC’s faculty being Caucasian, racial diversity in faculty is looking bleak. How do we address this issue? Why is it important? Come find out and participate as our faculty and others discuss this issue. Hosted and sponsored by the Student Diversity Coalition (SDC). Please read a recent Ebbtide article on the subject here.

“Big Fish, The Broadway Musical” makes its Seattle premiere at Shoreline Community College Fri., May 15 and runs through Sun., May 24. With music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by John August, this production centers on the charismatic Edward Bloom – a traveling salesman who lives life to the fullest – and his bigger-than-life tales that delight everyone, except his only son, Will. About to have a child of his own, Will is determined to discover the real truth behind his father’s tall tales.
Big Fish is overflowing with passion, humor and dazzling special effects and reminds us why we love going to the theater: for an experience that is richer, funnier and BIGGER than life itself.

This Wednesday’s meeting will cover chapters 18-22 and will take place in the PUB room 9202 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Marked for death by the Ku Klux Klan, Anne Moody survived to tell a story that resonates with today’s headlines about racial tensions and the targeting of African Americans by a white society.
**Free copies of Coming of Age in Mississippi are available only for students and classified staff who register to participate in the Community Read.

This Thurs., May 14 from 2-4:30 p.m., Shoreline Community College’s WorkSource Connections Center is offering a lecture style session that covers job search strategies for the aerospace industry. Learn how to access over 300 employers and gain tips for submitting your application to Boeing.
This workshop is FREE and open to anyone. However, seating is limited so pre-registration is required.

Congratulations Soon-to-Be Grads!
Join us in celebrating your achievements by participating in the 51st Commencement of Shoreline Community College honoring the Class of 2015 on June 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the Main Gymnasium, Building 3000. You should be proud of what you have accomplished, so think about sharing this special event with your family, friends, faculty and other students.
Everything you need to know about starting the process to walk at Commencement on June 7 is included in this link. Caps and gowns will be on sale at the SCC Bookstore in the lower level of the PUB on Monday, May 11, and will continue through Tuesday, May 26. All guests are required to have tickets, which also will be distributed through the Bookstore May 11-26.
