Just a reminder that registration for summer and fall quarters for current students began yesterday and continues throughout the remainder of the quarter. Registration priority dates are based on the number of credits you’ve completed, and are designed to ensure students are able to complete their degrees on time. New students will begin registration Tues., May 19, so register for classes now to ensure your spot. Questions? Check in with the advising and counseling center, in room 5229, or call them at 206-546-4559.

 Please attend a “Dialogue About Africa” on Friday, May 8th, at 11:30 am in the PUB Quiet Dining Room, Shoreline Community College.
This dialogue mainly focuses on talking about the current tragedies that have been happening in Africa.
The goal of this dialogue is to give African students a chance to share their feelings about these ongoing tragedies in their home countries and to talk about how to cope with them. It also aims to spread awareness to the community about the tragedies and is open to ideas that may suggest possible ways that let the students contribute what they can to help those who have been directly impacted by the tragedies.
During the dialogue, people may choose to share their feelings about the tragedies in writing.
For the dialogue, the students will be Joined by staff and faculty including Prof. DuValle Daniel, Dr. Ernest Johnson, Rezina Habtemariam and Jamie Ardena.
The dialogue is open to all students and anyone who wants to learn or share their reaction or any idea they may hold about the tragedies and ongoing problems facing many countries in Africa. |

Sophomore Showcase!
Students finishing their 2nd year of study are the focus of a very special concert this Fri., May 8 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the music building, room 818.
Join us for the Sophomore Showcase, a FREE event open to the public in which a wide variety of music will be performed, from jazz to classical, ragtime to folk, and musical theater. Performances include piano solo, vocal solo, acousitic guitar, jazz combo, piano duet, wind quintet, flute solo, cello solo and more. A FREE fantastic concert featuring our outstanding sophomores!

Putting the different parts of a sentence together in a manner that is grammatically correct can be as tricky as piecing together a puzzle. For tips and tricks to improve your ability to identify and use the different parts of a sentence, come join us in the Writing and Learning Studio in Room 1501 this Fri., May 8 from 12:30-1:20 p.m. for our free workshop called Sentence Puzzles.
This workshop is best suited for intermediate and advanced ESL students and others wanting a basic review of English grammar.

This Fri., May 8 join us in FOSS 5116 from 1-2:30 p.m. for a discussion about what it takes to uncover what you want from a career.
When we were young and plotting our career paths and personal lives, most of us thought very little of the day we might have to reinvent ourselves. This is approached with maybe some deeper digging than we could have ever thought necessary. For this deeper career excavation, we need to identify personal meaning and pleasure indicators and how they intersect with our strongest skills.
Please join us this Friday (5/8) and share your experiences on this subject. We’ll talk about six basic pathways suggested by career coach, Cheryl Simpson.
Settled on a job choice? As always, the floor is open for sharing how you found your path, along with the ups and downs of your job search and strategies; all with the usual delicious coffee, snacks, and networking.

In advance of President Obama’s Commencement address at Lake Area Technical Institute in South Dakota on Friday, the White House is running a campaign to create a conversation about his free community college for all initiative. To add your voice to the conversation, head to the White House page here and give them your story about how you personally #ReachHigher and what influences in your life made your education possible.
We’ll also be running around campus Thurs., May 7 collecting stories for our own social media campaign. So if we catch you at the PUB or between classes, please stop and talk to us about what makes college so important to you. If we don’t cross paths with you, head to Twitter and follow us at @shorelinecc and also follow the hashtags #CommunityCollege and #CollegeOpportunity and contribute to the dialogue about how college should be available to all.
Why do we care what the White House is doing? Well, we at Shoreline have our own free college movement right here in our own community called Shoreline Scholars. It’s how we are trying to #closethegap. But it’s going to take more than us – it’s also going to take you! So raise your voice and let the White House know that you support the #ReachHigher and #CollegeOpportunity campaigns by telling your story.

Seattle-based singer/songwriter Rachel Wong.
The English 101 Series “The Art of Change” welcomes its first artist, Rachel Wong, to campus Thurs., May 7 from 10:30-11:20 a.m. and 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Music Building, room 818. Wong’s event in the series is titled “Perfectly Imperfect: Music and Racial Identity.”
Rachel Wong is a Seattle-based Asian-American pop/soul singer who was recently featured on Good Morning America and is known for hits like “Perfectly Imperfect.”
This event is one in a three-part series bringing local artists to our campus this quarter to investigate how different artists think about the relationship between cultural production and social change in their work and in their lives more generally. Each guest will perform/give a talk/show images and address this theme. There will also be space for student-driven Q and A.
The series is FREE and open to the public.

Looking for a quiet place to get your computer work done but have a hard time concentrating with lots of noise around you? Come visit the 4102 Student Computer lab.
Since coming on board 6 months ago, I have worked hard to turn this very busy 100-computer lab into the vision the SCC Parliament has wanted for a long time. Because of this, the environment has changed pretty drastically and the students of SCC are very appreciative!
Due to the high usage during the day, if you need to work on your own portable devices (such as a laptop or tablet) I ask that you use the library tables upstairs or other places on campus in order to free up a computer for other students.
Also, book work that does not involve using our desktop computers really needs to be done elsewhere on campus where you can spread out and get your work done more effectively.
Because of the “whisper tones only” philosophy in this lab, small group activities are not appropriate and will be asked to seek another location. Constant chatter is too disrupting to other students around you as these conversations inevitably build in volume. This is also why there are to be no phone calls in the lab! Those around you do not need to hear your private conversation. Phones are to be on vibrate, and please take calls in the hallway only. Please be respectful to your peers.
We are working on purchasing scanners (for the library and this lab) that will scan directly to PDF to help facilitate upload to Canvas.

Over the past three weeks, some of the first campus-wide steps were taken in the process of building a long-term strategic plan for Shoreline Community College.
Tom Mesaros, a consultant with the Alford Group, facilitated five discussion groups to help gather input on the college’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). These sessions were in both large group and small group formats and drew 117 participants, including students, faculty and staff from across the campus.
“My impression is that the SWOT sessions were very successful,” said Stuart Trippel, Executive Director for Business and Student Support Services, who helped organize the sessions.
There is one more opportunity to participate in this piece of the strategic plan process, an online survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SCC_SWOT2015
The survey will be available online until May 20.

Beginning Mon., May 11, the 1300 and 1500 building restrooms will be close until a projected date of June 30. Both the men’s and women’s restrooms in these buildings are showing their age and are in need of updates. The latest in restroom design standards are being used for these improvements. We apologize for any inconvenience these closures will cause.
